INSTRUCTIONS These Family Itineraries are a new way to discover the Cerralbo Museum s collections through funny themed itineraries, aimed at children aged between 6 and 12. Using this material involves the interaction of the child and their adult companion throughout the itinerary. The adult is therefore responsible for reading what is written in this book, using the following criteria: Question? When you see a question, read it and ask the child to answer it. When the answer follows the question, the adult should help the child to work out the answer. Definition When you see this framework model, a definition will be given. This symbol indicates the games and activities that can be carried out in the Museum s rooms. Solution: Under the word solution in red, the resolution of the games and activities suggested by the Museum will be given. This symbol indicates the games and activities that can be done at home. 1

INTRODUCTION The 17th Marquis of Cerralbo, Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa ( ), was an enthusiastic traveller who travelled with his family to many countries such as France, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Greece or Turkey. Just as tourists do today, the Marquis took photographs of the places he visited and bought lots of interesting objects and antiques as souvenirs. 2 The Marquises of Cerralbo, D.Antonio and DªAmelia, Marquises of Villa-Huerta, in a hot air balloon at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona (1888). Antonio Esplugas. The Marquis lived in a time when boats, cars and trains were not as fast as they are today, making it very difficult to travel to faraway countries. However, the curious Marquis bought objects from faraway lands, such as China, Japan or Oceania, that allowed him to feel a little closer to the places he never visited.

INTRODUCTION To follow the Marquis of Cerralbo s enthusiasm for travelling, we have designed four enjoyable journeys throughout the objects that you can find in the Museum which will allow you to discover new countries and continents. Your travel destinations are Turkey 2. Japan 3. The American Continent 4. France 3

TURKEY Begin at... THE MEZZANINE FLOOR PARLOR At the crossroads of the continents of Europe and Asia is Turkey; that is why European travellers called it The Door to the East. Turkey is a country with many traditions and customs different from ours. One of the most eye-catching things is the clothes worn by men and women. Look carefully at the two photographs on the table where there is a clock with a country scene on it. In the first photo we can see Inocencia, the wife of the Marquis, and her daughter Amelia, in Turkish dress. In the second one, Inocencia is wearing a traditional headscarf. Would you like to learn more about how they used to get dressed in Turkey? BABOUCHES: typical slippers, open at the heel, worn in North Africa and Asia. EMBROIDERY WITH GOLD THREAD: embroidery made with metal wire wound around a normal thread to create beautiful designs that look like they are made of gold. 4 YASHMAK: a veil made with a very fine, white material that covers the wearer s head and part of their face.

TURKEY At home, cut out the Turkish clothes found on the next page and stick them in their corresponding place on the photos. María Manuela Inocencia Serrano y Cerver, Marchioness of Cerralbo, and Amelia del Valle y Serrano, wearing oriental clothes. Abdullah Frères

JAPAN Go up to... THE MAIN FLOOR THE ARAB ROOM The Samurai lived for over a thousand years in Japan, at the very eastern end of Asia. The Samurai were very brave warriors who fought for their Emperor and defended honor. Look at the samurai armors in each corner of the room. What materials do you think they are made of? Metal: small plates, mesh. Fabric or leather: as a base on which the mesh is placed. These were all tied together with colourful ribbons. Do you think it would be easy to move wearing this kind of armor? Samurai armor, thanks to the way they were made with a base of small, connected plates, were actually very lightweight and flexible. Do you think it would be more difficult to move wearing the armors you saw in the Armory worn by European knights? European armors were made with large metal plates and this made them very heavy, making it difficult for the wearer to move. Now look at the helmets. Can you see something different on one of them? The metal horns. 8 Why do you think this samurai warrior had horns on his helmet but the others don t? The horns on this samurai s helmet indicate the rank of the warrior. Bigger horns, more important was the Samurai.

JAPAN This samurai needs some colour! Colour it in, using the samurai armor you ve seen in this room as a guide. This image was taken from the decoration of a Japanese vase from the Edo period ( ), which you will find in the First Gallery of the Museum. 9

AMERICA THE MAIN FLOOR THE BANQUET ROOM In 1492, Christopher Columbus and his sailors discovered America. This was a very rich land, where other people and civilizations were found, as well as many things unknown in Europe, such as many plants and food. Potatoes, tomatoes, cocoa, turkey, peppers, pineapples, peanuts, pumpkins or corn are all foods that originally came from America. The walls of the Banquet Room are decorated with many still lifes. Do you know what a still life is? STILL LIFE: A painting where you can see vegetables, fruits, animals, flowers, jugs, books and other objects. Try and find the still lifes where these three vegetables of American origin are hiding. Tomato Pumpkin 10 Celery

AMERICA Solution: Still life of a kitchen Cristóforo Munari. Around 1710 Still life with pumpkin and vegetables. School of Juan van der Hamen. First half of the 17th century And if there is one challenge, perhaps there are two, don t leave this room without looking up at the ceiling: in one of the paintings you can find a pot for making hot chocolate. Allegory of chocolate What is a chocolate pot used for? To stir up hot chocolate. Do you know which seed, originally from America, chocolate comes from? Cocoa. 11

FRANCE THE MAIN FLOOR THE BILLIARDS ROOM In France, one of our neighbouring countries, is home to the world s most famous palace... the Palace of Versailles. The powerful King Louis XIV ( ) lived in Versailles. Such an important king he was that many countries copied the way he dressed and did his hair. Look closely! At the time of Louis XIV, hairstyles consisted of long curly wigs that were very high on top. Louis XIV was succeeded by his son Louis XV ( ,) who changed the fashion for hairstyles. Louis XV imposed a fashion requiring men to wear white wigs, tied in a ponytail. 12

FRANCE The room you are in now is decorated with portraits of various people. Can you see anyone in this room with the fashionable hairstyles at the time of Louis XIV and Louis XV? Look just at the portraits on the wall in front of the windows. Solution: WE WANT YOU TO HAVE FUN WHILE YOU ARE LEARNING! 13
