2 VITSORIS hand tufted rug size: 120cm x 140cm pile hight: 16mm salvador hand tufted rug size: 200cm x 250cm pile hight: 14mm The history of making rugs goes back to the 7th millennium, although the earliest surviving carpet from Armenia dates from the 4th century BC. Historians say that rug weaving originated in an attempt to imitate animal furs by adding to a flat woven fabric additional woollen threads resembling the long hairs of animal fur. At first these artificial furs were used as floor coverings in tents, but at a later stage of its development the rug became of decorative interest. In the use, form and stylisation of the rug are embodied most of the fundamental elements of nomadic culture. As such, rugs have historically been vehicles of cultural communication between east and west, north and south. Numerous 16th century European painters included Ottoman rugs in their pictures: as a sign of cross-cultural dialogue, the classical Turkish rug came to be called Holbein type, abstract in pattern and restricted in colour palette. The aspect of global communication is perhaps most fittingly epitomised by the wellknown story from the 20th century art history: in 1934, Joseph Beuys was shot down over the Crimea and seriously injured. He was found by Tatars, who wrapped him in felt and fat and nursed him back to health. Later, the image of the artist swathed in a rug a symbol of animal skin going through some nerve-racking bodily experience, became a trademark of postwar visual culture in search of a universal human theme. Besides connecting cultures, rugs and other woven fabrics have been a dominant channel of communication between the earthly and spiritual worlds. Their colours and patterns are not matters of chance but evolve from a climate of feelings and beliefs which are often thousands of years old. Yellow and gold, for example, are symbols of rank and power, while green stands for rebirth and resurrection. There are cultures in which carpets with certain decorative motives are used for prayer mats, and there are cultures which have placed godly weavers at the centre of their mythology. Above all, as an aesthetic symbol, the carpet expresses the idea of the garden, or the notion of paradise which is placed in the heart of one s home. Gregor Taul, art historian
3 NO FUN RUGS is the first collection of textile designer Johanna Ulfsak s exclusive yet allembracing conceptual brand. Having studied in Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and Japan, her rugs are carefully made in Europe, her oeuvre is inspired by a far-raging fascination to popular culture, but most of all she wants to distort the image of the rug or interior design in general to be solely an aesthetic phenomenon. It is not by chance that instead of usual suspects, NO FUN main collaborators in the design process are former prisoners, deaf community, elderly people from local hobby clubs and self-taught artists. While at the core are the highest-quality visually captivating hand-tufted rugs to match any modern interior, these carpets are not only about giving a voice to those whose words are seldom heard. At the heart of the collection is also the idea of rereading... 20th century art history and how these big names have and perhaps have not defined the spaces we inhabit. House-hold names Yves, Kazimir, Salvador, Valie, Piet, Clyfford and Vitsoris may stand for certain values, but in the end the meanings contributed to them depends on every single user s personal feeling, taste and sense of humour.
