The Phönix over time. -- / *** Since the company was established in 1855, the Phönix has always been part of the Scheufelen brand, then and now a symbol of ongoing innovation. The change in our appearance reflects a continuous development in paper-production technology and the great innovative force of our paper factory. the founder of our company, carl scheufelen, made a clear decision for entrepreneurial independence when he leased the paper mill on the river Lauter in His move from a materially-secure, state-supervised teaching profession to his position as an independent papermaker marks the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit permeating more than 150 years of Papierfabrik Scheufelen. As early as 1866, Carl Scheufelen brought the era of making paper by hand to an end in the Lauter region by introducing the first vat machine. In 1892 the first Scheufelen art paper left the factory to capture the market under the brand name Phönix art paper in After renaming the company Erste deutsche Kunstdruck-Papierfabrik Carl Scheufelen, the production of premium special papers became the company s core competence, and continues to be so to this day. Three forms of government, two world wars and rapid technological change have marked the development of our company. What started as a small paper mill with five members of staff 150 years ago, is now a modern company with around 500 employees and state-of-the art production machinery. And the first art paper to appear on the European continent has become a globally recognised brand for top-quality coated papers: Premium white since 1855.

At the same time, we are fully aware of our responsibilities in dealing with this inheritance: This requires to maintain our identity and focus on our strengths. It also requires to recognise at an early stage which decisions need to be made now in order to ensure the company s success in the future. A far-reaching tradition is only possible if innovation is firmly anchored as a component of the corporate philosophy. Openness towards new technologies and our own initiatives are therefore leitmotifs that have created the most important milestones in corporate development. Innovative products, technological and entrepreneurial pioneer work through to social and cultural achievements these are all part of the overall picture. For us, tradition also means a classic sense of stability and continuity, particularly at times when the issue of a company s location is more pressing than ever. 7 Our paper sets standards. paper is so much more than just a basis for printing ink. Without paper, this world would be without knowledge. Paper conveys a lasting meaning to messages. And particularly in our Information Age, paper is the basis for invaluable communication. The fact that we have never moved away from our core competence as a manufacturer of coated white premium papers is attributable to our fascination for ever more perfect paper as a cultural vehicle. This passion has enabled us to set groundbreaking quality standards: In 1969, Scheufelen quality entered outer space when nasa ordered a special paper with low flammability which had to be developed for that year s Apollo 12 flight to the moon. Our passion convinced the Vatican to use our paper for a large number of valuable facsimiles, books and reproductions in the 1980s, and it has even found its way into the casinos of Las Vegas. The development of heaven 42 in 2007 is an exemplary document of the innovative force of our company. It is the whitest coated paper in the global market by far. On a daily basis, we work towards creating more innovations in the future. Even today, top-quality paper manufacturing is as much a traditional craft as it is an art. High-tech production and control are just as important as our distinct sense of quality, our experience and our specialist eye. 11 QUALITY HAS A RECEIPE // From conveyor belt to pulper * a. / Pulp and water are the basic ingredients for paper manufacturing. The pulp bales are transported to the pulper on a conveyor belt, where they are mixed with water into a thin mash. Later, fillers, additives and sizing agents are added. Each type of paper has its special recipe. The final fibre mash is mixed with water at a ratio of 99:1 after purification and milling, to be pumped to the paper machine mesh. --

Paper manufacturing *** ONLY A FEW SECONDS TO THE FINAL WEB // Paper machine V * b. / The pulp mix is drained on the wire section producing a firm web which is pressed in the press section for further dewatering. The web is then dried in the drying section and is rolled at the end of the paper machine into reels of paper. The concept of the twin-wire paper machine ensures identical surface qualities on both sides. The process of converting the pulp mix to finished base paper only takes a few seconds. --

13 REFINING THE BASE PAPER // Transport of base paper to the coating machine * c. / Often paper manufacturing stops with the production of base paper. However, in our company and this is where our particular know-how that has been shaped by 150 years of experience comes into play the manufacture continues with coating. An aqueous solution of pigments and binding agents is applied to close the natural unevenness of the finely structured paper surface. --

We process kaolin white china clay into an aqueous suspension by mixing it with water and chemicals. Together with further additives, the final mass is transported to the coating kitchen and afterwards to the coating machine. --

15 SUITABLE COATING FOR ALL TYPES OF PAPER // Control at the coating machine * e. / Each type of paper requires specific coating machine settings that have to be monitored during the manufacturing process. A metal blade distributes the coating that is evenly applied to the base paper surface over rollers, taking off excess substance. Infrared radiators, hot air and steam-heated cylinders dry the wet coat. --

Paper manufacturing *** REFINING OF THE SURFACE: GLOSS, SILK OR MATT // Paper web in the calender * f. / Through pressure, friction, humidity and warmth, the paper in the super calender becomes glossy and smooth, using several steel- and hard-paper rollers running in opposite directions at different speeds. The silk paper grades receive a special calender finish, condensing the paper surface without smoothing it. This leads to a particular plasticity and brilliance of printing colours, whereas the surrounding paper appears matt and free of reflection. --

17 PREMIUM QUALITY, READY FOR DELIVERY // Inspection of the pallet feeder in the paper hall * g. / After cutting the paper to different reel widths, the small reels are either transported to reel shipping or to the cutter-sorter, which cuts them into sheets of different sizes. Each paper shipment is quality-controlled before dispatch. The final Scheufelen premium paper leaves our factory packed either in reams or on pallets. --

19 PRECISE LABORATORY ANALYSIS // Testing the basic substances in the laboratory * h. / Subtleties count: Each individual delivery of the basic substances for the manufacturing process is subject to a thorough initial control process in our test laboratory, before it is released for further processing. The laboratory is also in charge of analysing the process water at the paper machines. --

Q u a l i t y m a n a g e m e n t *** HIGH-TECH AND ACCURACY FOR QUALITY ASSURANCE // Computerised process control system * i. / A comprehensive quality assurance system is part of the entire production process. Scanners at the machines identify the quality data of the progressing production process and pass them on to the computerised process control system. The system corrects deviations from the reference value independently. All quality aspects of a process are monitored on a screen. Since 1991, our company has been certified according to the strict guidelines of the quality standard, DIN EN ISO 9001:

For that reason, our test printing plant is a very important control and backup entity for the final quality of the paper. From each production run, whether of sheet or reel paper (Tambour), we take samples that we test under real-life conditions for printability and workability on a five-colour offset printing press. --

For generations, we have been the largest employer in the region and have thus had a significant impact on the culture of the area. Many of the economic and social achievements of our company have created milestones nobody could imagine to be without now. Hence, we feel connected to our location in the Lenninger Valley in a very special way. --

Corporate culture *** ECOLOGICAL RESPONSIBILITY AS A LEITMOTIF // Biomechanical-chemical sewage plant * l. / Only a company acting in an environmentally-responsible and sustained manner can enjoy success in the long term. Water is one of the most precious natural resources and essential for paper manufacturing. We have reduced water consumption for the production of one kilogramme of paper to currently around 13 litres. After processing in our bio - mechanical-chemical sewage plant, we transfer the water back into the river Lauter in the Lenninger Valley at a quality level about which we are instantly reassured by trout and other sensitive fish, cavorting in the secondary settler. --

25 THE SCHEUFELEN RAILWAY : INFRASTRUCTURAL ADVANTAGE FOR THE ENTIRE REGION // Delivery of goods to the factory premises * m. / Carl Scheufelen s achievement using a lot of his own initiative and private funds has always been an important infrastructural advantage for the entire region: the railway line Kirchheim-Oberlenningen. Goods are transported directly to the storehouses on our company premises by freight train. For the people in the Lenninger Valley, this has been a valuable link to Stuttgart since

We have a long history of cultivating extensive areas of fruit trees, those traditional, valuable orchards at the Albtrauf. Formerly significant for wood production, they are now the basis for a unique by-product : Plums, cherries, mirabelles or pears are distilled into exquisite liquors in our in-house distillery widely known beyond the region for its quality products. --

27 THE MUSEUM FOR PAPER- AND BOOK ART A FOUNDATION // Paper museum at the old Schlössle * o. / The artistic contact with paper as a material has been a main aspect of Scheufelen s self-conception almost from the beginning. On the 100th anniversary of our art paper, we established a museum for paper and book art as a foundation that is unique in Germany. Since it opened in 1992, mainly book and paper objects by contemporary German artists have been presented here. They can be admired in the traditional premises of the old Schlössle in Oberlenningen. --

Hence, the FSC certification (No. GFA-COC ) for our brands PhoeniXmotion, Consort Royal, Job Parilux and heaven 42 is the logical result and evidence of our accountability. Meanwhile, in line with this underlying ecological approach, our BVS and BRO standard coated papers have also been PEFC-certified (No. PEFC/ ). FSC and PEFC are seals of quality for an ecologically responsible modus operandi, based on the fundamental principles of ecological forestry and traceability within the supply chain. The consistent adherence to the strict regulations of these quality seals is an important aspect of our product- and quality policy protecting the environment and at the same time meeting our clients requirement for premium quality.
