1 St. Paul s School 1690 Church Street San Francisco, CA T: ext 28 F: Dear Incoming 6 th Grade Families, This packet contains next year s supply list, the summer reading assignments, a suggested reading list, and the summer reading log. Please make sure that your child reads at least 2 books over the summer. Please make sure that your child fills in the summer reading log each time they finish a book, it is important to see what level and types of books they are reading. If anyone is looking for a good book to help your child review the past year, the book Mastering Fifth Grade is a good one. You can find it online at Teacher Created Materials ( This book will review all subjects taught throughout the whole school year. This book does a wonderful job reviewing the subject content area already covered and prepares the student for the following year, but should NOT take the place of the recommendation of summer school. If you are interested in having your child focus on one particular area of content, the site mentioned above has books for that, as well. It is important for children to continue their academic study during the summer, it will helps them in the fall with transitioning into a new grade and starting with a new teacher. 2 Sixth Grade - Supply List These supplies are needed for the first day of school. Please have your name on each item. Some of these supplies will need to be replenished throughout the year. * A 13 Pocket Expandable Portfolio * A zippered pencil bag (NOT A BOX) * LARGE (5)/ SMALL (1) ~ Cloth Book Covers * Pens (blue and black ONLY~ 40-50)- No glitter pens * Red correcting pens (10-20) * #2 Pencils (Mechanical Pencils, if possible)- 4-5 packs * Soft pink eraser (3) * LARGE box of colored pencils or crayons * LARGE box of markers (NO permanent pens) * Water colors ~ at least 8 colors * A ruler ~ 12 inches * A pair of scissors (medium sized) * Tape (2) (scotch) * A personal Stapler (small) * Bottle of Glue (1-Big or 2-Small) * White Out-NO LIQUID, Dry-line is better * Three-subject spiral notebooks (6) * One-subject spiral notebooks (4) * Binder paper (2 packs of 200 sheets) * Graph paper (1 packet) * A pocket dictionary optional * A calculator optional * A Protractor * 5 Folders * 2 boxes of Kleenex * 2 roll of paper towels * 1 binder and dividers (7 dividers) for Student Testing Portfolios * A small personal pencil sharpener optional * $10.00 for St. Paul s Student Planner ($5), & 4G St. Paul s Flash Drive ($10) Please make checks payable to St. Paul s & put child s name on Memo. 3 Sixth Grade Summer Reading You will need to read at least TWO books: ** The first book can be any book you want to read and you will need to do a creative book report. (See below). This will be due on the first Friday of school. ** The second book will be presented in the fall. This type of book report will be announced at a later date. On the first day of the school the student will need to turn a 4 x 6 index card with the title, author and a short paragraph summary of this book. ** Please make sure that you log all the books you have read over the summer on the reading log. You will need to turn in your summer reading log on the first day of school. You should be reading a half an hour to an hour a day. Here are Ideas for the creative book report: * Perform a one person skit *Shoe Box Diorama * Shadow box * News report (record a Video) * Movie Poster * Mosaic * Clay or play dough model * Design a LARGE Book jacket * Perform a Dance * Invent something from the book * Write a song & perform it * Write a poem or spoken word * Create a Clay Animation If there is something you want to do that is NOT on this list...
