Yuri Gagarin Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins & Buzz Aldrin In 1961, a Russian called Yuri Gagarin was the first man to go into space and orbit the Earth, but the American crew of Apollo 8 were the first people to orbit the Moon. They orbited it ten times in December 1968 and took the first picture of our planet from space. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the Moon for the first time on July 20 th 1969 and the third member of Apollo 11, Michael Collins, stayed in the spacecraft travelling around the Moon. Armstrong said the now famous words, That s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. Millions of people watched them on television. The two astronauts collected soil and rock samples from the surface of the Moon and they prepared a solar wind experiment and put up an American flag. They also talked by satellite to the President of the United States. They returned safely to Earth and landed in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii.
