2 INTRODUCTION TO Chris Sutton, Director James Latham PLC and Lathams Limited Welcome to the Panels section of the new James Latham Product Guide. With the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR) coming into play from 3rd March 2013 and the impending arrival of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) on the 1st July 2013, we are pleased to be able to offer our customers the widest range of legal, sustainable and fit for purpose products in the industry. Our offering includes branded products such as SMARTPLY OSB, plus WISA SPRUCE and our LUMIN plywood. We continue to add to our ex stock offering and this guide includes Nevamar by Panolam laminates, Allure, which is a range of decorative products such as stone laminate, mirror laminate and rough cut oak veneered panels, plus Valchromat Coloured Engineered Fibreboard. We would also draw your attention to products we launched last year, namely Dendrolight, Tricoya, GRADA, Synergii Worktops, plus HIF Finesse. Our range of door blanks continues to develop with the addition of Melamine Faced Egger Décor FD30, plus the Moralt factory continues to produce high quality fire, acoustic and thermal door blanks. Many questions have been asked about the CPR and its effect, so please find to follow a brief outline below. The Construction Products Regulation (CPR) comes into force 1st July From this date wood and wood based products destined for the construction market and covered by a European Harmonised Standard or European Technical Approval will be required to declare their performance characteristics via CE marking in order to be placed on the UK and EU market construction products markets. To reflect the new CPR, section 7 of UK Building Regulations is also being amended to adopt CE marking as the primary route to show fitness for purpose in the UK. It is not anticipated that this change will cause major disruption to the supply of wood products as manufacturers have been working towards these changes for a number of years. However, alongside the manufacturer s responsibilities, distributors will also have a responsibility to ensure the required information is passed along the supply chain. Looking at one of the main product groups: Wood Based Panels have been voluntarily declaring their performance characteristics via CE Marking since 2004 so most buyers will be familiar with the terminology and format used. Hopefully within this section, there will be established and new products that are of interest to you. 3 As active supporters of the forest campaign to improve forest management, with growing public awareness of the environment and environmental issues and many customers specifically requesting certified products, we have made significant moves towards stocking a wider range of products that originate from identifiable forest units where sustainable forestry is practiced. James Latham has Forest Stewardship Council (FSC ) certification, Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Scheme (PEFC), BM Trada Trak and Chain of Custody at all of its sites. Our suppliers have their own third party certification and unique chain of custody number. Materials are controlled from the forest, through production and into our stock. James Latham purchases FSC and PEFC materials from its suppliers using a clearly defined, documented system, stating product description and our own chain of custody number. Supplier paperwork is checked carefully and when goods are received, product is checked and stored separately or clearly marked. All FSC and PEFC panel products have their own product code to ensure accurate order selection for onward delivery to our customers. Using the robust Timber Trade Federation Responsible Purchasing Policy, we have carried out due diligence and audits on our supply base, well before the European Union Timber Regulation came into force on the 3rd March The National Measurements Office are the nominated body who will police the imports of wood based products. We will continue to look to source legally third party certified panel products and have worked closely with suppliers across the globe to add their products to our range. 14 DECORATIVE VENEERED MDF DECORATIVE VENEERED MDF Finesse The Finesse range of veneered panels are produced to our own grading guidelines. These have been developed over time to give a superior grade of veneered board with maximum consistency. On each species we have taken a high grade of veneer from our supplier and further enhanced this by improving in the areas that are important to our customers, based on feedback from a number of different market sectors. Whilst it is easy to measure certain criteria, such as the width of veneer leaves, we are aware of the importance of the overall aesthetic appearance of the panel. Over a period of time, we have enhanced the Finesse grade further still by ensuring that our manufacturers have a clear understanding of how important the appearance of a whole sheet is. Consistency is a key factor and to that end we have ensured that our manufacturers produce a maximum number of veneers from each flitch and that boards are then clearly marked in batches. Only by doing this can we offer what we believe to be the most consistent and highly graded commercial veneered board range available to the market today. Finesse and Dartmoor grades and specifications are our own unique brands. For many years customers from a wide range of industries from shopfitting to furniture production would specify Dartmoor veneered boards for their high quality and excellent consistency. The product disappeared from the market when production ceased at the Norbord factory at South Molton in Devon. Dartmoor Caberwood MDF is produced exclusively for James Latham to our own veneer-grading and is now available from all James Latham sites, in a wide range of species, thicknesses and sheet sizes. Designers are constantly striving to create unique textures that transform the cold, smooth shape and structure of interior surfaces and HIF Finesse achieves this. There is no other product on the market like it. 35 DOOR BLANKS DOOR BLANKS INTRODUCTION TO DOOR BLANKS Door types explained A wide range of specifications and standards are often quoted on door blanks, the following is a summary and explanation of what they all mean. Fire doors Mostly classified to BS or BS EN with generally a 30 or 60 minute rating (FD30, FD60). This means that the door, when used correctly and in accordance with the test evidence or global assessment, can achieve a rating of either 30 or 60 minutes resistance before fire breaches the door set. Within the test evidence and/or global assessment there is clear guidance on a number of areas regarding the completed door set, including: Permitted door leaf sizes Sizes of side and overpanels Classification and dimensions of glazing Door configurations, ie. single or double doors Whether the doorset is single or double-acting Rebate or meeting stile details Dimensions and types of approved door frames Acoustic insulation An area in which specifications have increased significantly in recent years. Acoustic values may be expressed in decibels ( db ). A door with a 41dB rating will, again when used in accordance with test evidence, acoustically insulate to lower the noise transfer by 41 decibels Thermal insulation Another increasingly important area. With recent changes in Building Regulations the thermal insulation requirements of many doors and also windows are increasing. A thermal insulation value is expressed as a u-value in W/m2k, where a lower number indicates a higher level of insulation. A recent change to Building Regulation Document L dictates that many doors have to have a u-value of no higher than 1.4 W/m2k. Durability/wear and tear Service life testing There are several standards or measurements for doorset durability DD171, BSEN1191, BSEN1192, BSEN12217 to name a few. In laboratory tests the doorset and its elements are put through, for example, repetitive open and close cycles. A doorset that has been through a 500,000 cycle rating has clearly been through a very rigorous test! Security The construction industry is being encouraged to adopt crime prevention measures to assist in reducing the opportunity for and the fear of crime, creating a safer and more secure environment. Secured By Design SBD is the UK Police flagship initiative supporting the principles of designing-out crime. It has a number of key features that can be found on Doors come with a PAS 23-1:1999 (general performance requirements for door assemblies) and/or PAS 24-1:1999 (enhanced security performance requirements for door assemblies) rating. 116

An attack test standard for door sets which certifies that a particular door, frame lock and hardware set has withstood a series of physical tests based on common methods of burglary using defined sets of tools and attack time. Flamebreak door blanks have successfully passed the DD171 and BS EN1192 tests for severe duty application, and reports are currently being issued.
