If you discover any inaccuracies please inform FUSION or one of its agents and we will make corrections for the next release. Before taking the Fullwood Activity Adapter & Fullwood Activity Adapter Multiplexer system in operation, this manual and the appropriate operating instructions have to be read carefully. A proper handling of the equipment is the basis for correct functioning. The equipment must be used only for the application described. It is the responsibility of the farmer to check his animals and the performance of the equipment. If, for any reason, the Fullwood Activity Adapter & Fullwood Activity Adapter Multiplexer system is not operational or individual animals refuse to use the system, it is the responsibility of the farmer to feed and milk the animals with alternative methods. Check that no pipes or anything similar are protruding in the barn or in the parlour on which the (transponder) neck bands or leg bands can get caught. Calibration of milkmeters and feed dispensers is of most importance to obtain proper milking and feeding results. If calibration for some reasons is wrong, or wrong values have been programmed, the milking results and feed distribution can be bad until correct calibration has been done and proper values have been entered. Never remove cover(s) or parts of the system before the electrical power cable(s) is/are disconnected. Do not flush the electronic equipment with (high) pressure hoses. Installation of the equipment must be carried out by skilled and authorised technicians only. False or incorrect operation of the system may seriously affect the animals. 5 1. Introduction The Fullwood Activity Adapter (FwAA) is used for identification of Fullwood pedometer tags ('Crysta Act+') in Fullwood systems. The FwAA interfaces between FusionNet and the antennas for identifying and reading Fullwood pedometers. The unit is also capable of reading a number of inputs, like gate switches or photocells and controlling a number of outputs like feeding motors etc. The Crysta Act+, is a pedometer transponder that is attached to a leg of a cow. It provides the cow with a unique ID, to make identification of the cow possible. It also records the number of steps of the cow it is attached to, and the cow s lying behaviour (lying time and lying bouts). The Crysta Act+ transfers this information to the FwAA and to Crystal every time the cow is identified. In Crystal this information is used for effective heat and health detection of the cow. A complete pedometer ID system can be made up using a number of components: - FwAA: Fullwood Activity Adapter which is the main control unit of the system, with the possibility to connect two antennas. - FwAAM: Fullwood Activity Adapter Multiplexer, capable of multiplexing 16 antennas. Up to three FwAAM s can be used with one FwAA, raising the maximum number of antennas to A number of pedometer antennas. - One Crysta Act+ for every cow. According to the configuration and the installation requirements, this system may be installed as a FwAA supporting one or two antennas (without a FwAAM), or as a combination of a FwAA with one to three FwAAM's, supporting up to a maximum of 48 antennas. Fig. 1 shows a typical Fullwood pedometer system with FwAA and FwAAM in a Crystal situation. In this case the system controls: - Afilite milkmeters, - Two Walk-over antennas in the milking parlour. - A number of out-of-parlour feeding stations. - Photocells for cow presence detection. 7 2. Hardware description The Fullwood Activity Adapter (FwAA) identifies Fullwood (and Afikim) pedometers, providing identification and activity information. 2.1 Fullwood Activity Adapter (FwAA), front view Fig. 2: Overview of the FwAA lid. The FwAA lid is equipped with two 7-segments displays and three LED s The display will show the antenna number on which the FwAA is scanning. The three LED s have the following functionality: 'Com Flt IDeal': (Red) indicates that there is no communication with the UCC. It must be off when an identification session is in process. 'Tx antenna': (Red) This indicator reflects the IDeal transmission sequence. It blinks when the identification pulses are generated, and is off when no ID request is sent. 'Rx antenna': (Green) This indicator reflects the IDeal reception status. - When ID requests are sent to the antenna this LED must be off. - A bright blink follows when the pedometer answers to show a positive reception. - If this LED is steady ON, while an identification-request is being sent, it can indicate a bad antenna. - When blinking with a dim light, this indicates the precence of noise and/or interference from unwanted other sources. This noise/ interference will affect the reception and identification reliability. AXG30000_FwAA~FwAAM Tech 7

8 2.2 Fullwood Activity Adapter (FwAA), inside the box The Fullwood Activity Adapter is made up of two PCB's: The IDeal PCB is installed in the lid of the enclosure and controls the pedometer antennas and is responsible for the identification of the pedometers. The other PCB (the UCC controller) is mounted on the back plate in the bottom of the enclosure. This PCB takes care of the communication to FusionNet, reading gate inputs, controlling relay outputs, controlling lamp outputs etc. The UCC also controls the IDeal PCB, which means that the IDeal will only start an ID when the UCC requests it. For more detailed information about the UCC PCB, please refer to the UCC. Fig. 3: The opened FwAA controller, with RS485 communication UCC<>IDeal pre-wired. The IDeal PCB, as presented in Fig. 5, consists of three electrical circuits: Power supply circuit: The power supply circuit is fed by the same 24 VAC power supply as the UCC PCB. Micro controller circuit: This circuit directs the digital data flow between the RF transmission/reception unit and the UCC board. It is connected to the UCC controller by a three-wire RS485 communication cable, sending data in response to the UCC request. On the other hand, it switches ON the antenna that has to transmit an identification request, and stores some digital data (the identification and step counter value of the pedometer) until communication is initiated by the UCC. RF transmission/reception unit: The RF transmission / reception circuit is the direct connection to the antenna. Its task is to convert the digital data to an analog signal sent to the antenna and vice versa. The transmission (Tx) power level can be adjusted by means of a potentiometer (P2) and determines the effective identification range of the system. The voltages can be measured at certain points on the PCB, this is described further in this chapter. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PRODUCT IS DELIVERED WITH MOST OF ITS PARAMETERS PRESET TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE INSTALLATION. ACCORDING TO THE SITUATION AND THE INSTALLATION, SOME OF THEM MAY HAVE TO BE ADJUSTED. AXG30000_FwAA~FwAAM Tech 8

9 2.2.1 RS485 default communication between UCC and IDeal RS485 is now the default communication between the UCC and the IDeal. With UCC firmware version 2.6 and higher, RS485 is by default used for communication between the UCC and the IDeal PCB. RS485 communication, UCC firmware version 2.6 and FwAA firmware version FU16, is necessary when also the lying-behaviour of the cows needs to be retrieved. (Only available in combination with Crysta Act+ tags!). 11 2.2.3 Frequency choices for the Crysta Act+ and Antenna In Fig. 6, two Crysta Act+ pedometers and two antennas are shown. Because of different standards in different countries, the identification system is built to support two frequencies (low and high). Western Europe and the Common Market need the low frequency system, while the USA and other countries the high frequency. The choice between the two frequencies is indicated by the color of the antennas and pedometer casings. Blue is for low frequency and orange for high frequency. Table 2 presents the information. Countries Antenna and Crysta Act+ colour Transmit frequency Receive frequency Europe Blue 128 KHz 80 KHz USA and others Orange 358 KHz 200 KHz Table 2; The two kinds of frequency-systems and their attributes. Fig. 6: The two available system antenna-frequencies and related unit colours. On the 'Crysta Act+' pedometer, an UP mark can be found, inside a triangle:. The point of the triangle should point up when stored and also when connected to a cow s leg. AXG30000_FwAA~FwAAM Tech 11

17 3.1.3 Default wiring in the FwAA and pedometer type The FwAA comes with the communication-wiring between the IDeal and the UCC pre-wired. For a long time, RS232 has been the only means of communication between these two in the FwAA. With the implementation of the C2000 protocol, Crysta Act+ transponders can now also be used with the FwAA, but only if RS485 communication is used between the IDeal and the UCC. With RS485, also regular, older type pedometers can still be used RS485; the default. With the use of RS485 between the IDeal and the UCC, both the older type Pedometers and Crysta Act+ can be used. All gathered data from the 'Crysta Act+' pedometers is available. Although the FwAA comes RS485- pe-wired, wiring information for RS232/RS485 is provided here. The communication wiring between the UCC and the IDeal for RS485 should be according to Fig. 4 and Table 6. In this case, there should be no wire loop on the IDeal PCB between J5, GND and J4, TX-! The Jumper settings on the IDeal PCB should be according to Fig. 4. IDeal J5 UCC J26 RS485 Gnd < > Gnd Communication wiring Rx < > B IDeal <> UCC Tx < > A Table 6; RS485 Communication wiring IDeal <> UCC. IN THE CASE OF RS485 COMMUNICATION, BETWEEN THE IDEAL AND THE UCC, THERE SHOULD BE NO WIRE LOOP BETWEEN J5, GND AND J4, TX-! RS232; the previous standard. When using the Plus pedometers with RS232, the information about Lying behaviour (lying time and lying bouts) is not available. In case of RS232, the communication wiring between the UCC and the IDeal should be according to Fig. 5, Fig. 8, Fig. 18 and Table 7. The Jumper settings on the IDeal PCB should be according to Fig. 5. IDeal J5 UCC J10 IDeal J5 IDeal J4 RS232 Gnd < > Gnd Communication wiring Rx < > Tx Gnd < > Tx- IDeal <> UCC Tx < > Rx Table 7; RS232 Communication wiring IDeal <> UCC. BECAUSE OF A HARDWARE FLAW IN THE REV. 04 IDEAL PCB, THE WIRE LOOP BETWEEN J5, GND AND J4, TX- IS NECESSARY FOR RS232 COMMUNICATION! AXG30000_FwAA~FwAAM Tech 17

25 3.4 Installation of the FwAA & FwAAM PLEASE NOTE THAT THE POWER SUPPLY SHOULD BE 24V AC; THE FWAA DOES NOT FUNCTION WITH 24V DC!! If one FwAA-unit should control more than two antennas, an Activity Adaptor Multiplexer (FwAAM) is needed to control all the antennas. One FwAAM unit can control up to 16 antennas. A maximum of 48 antennas can be controlled, using 3 FwAAM units connected to one FwAA. When FwAAM units are used, they should be connected to the FwAA using two cables: One 7-wire cable (0.3 mm²) is needed to carry the antenna select signals between the IDeal PCB and the FwAAM. The wire color is listed next to the J9 to J11 connectors of the IDeal PCB. The cable from connector J9 is used to connect the first FwAAM (to its J1 connector), J10 is connected to the second FwAAM (its J1 connector) and J11 can be used to connect the third FwAAM (its J1 connector). A 6 wire shielded cable (0.3 mm²) carries the antenna HF signals between the FwAA controller and the FwAAM units. This cable comes from the IDeal PCB, and is daisy chained to all connected FwAAM's. From the IDeal connector J1, the cable runs to the first FwAAM connector J2. From the first FwAAM unit connector J3 it runs to the second unit J2; and so on. The length of the cables between the FwAA and FwAAM can be up to 15 meters long. This means that in some cases, one FwAAM unit may be installed in the milking parlour, above the middle of the entrance in between the walk-over antennas and a second FwAAM in the feeding station area. Next drawing gives an overview of all FwAA-FwAAM connections AXG30000_FwAA~FwAAM Tech 25

29 3.6 Diagnosing the FwAA and FwAAM This chapter gives information needed to service FwAA systems FwAA test mode To start the FwAA in self test mode, dipswitch SW2-4 of the IDeal PCB must be set to ON (TEST). Please note that whenever a switch is set, the device must be reset by switching its power off for about 10 seconds, followed by switching it on again. When in the Self-Test mode, the FwAA operation will be determined according to its own gate switches position. For the test itself, two pedometers and one special test pedometer are needed. The two pedometers will be used to move the ID requests from one stall to another. If the same pedometer is identified in two consecutive antennas, the identification request returns to the stall before. The test pedometer will be used for the test itself. The three tags used for this test will be called: Tag 1, Tag 2, and Test Tag. Testing all connected antennas can be done with next procedure: 1. Set the IDeal PCB to test mode with switch SW2/ 4 to 'Test' =ON. 2. Reset the whole FwAA. 3. Set Test tag to non-transmitting mode (Tx switch down). 4. Place Test tag about 1 meter away from the first antenna and start pushing it towards the antenna until the indicator mounted on the Test tag start to blink. This is the effective range of that antenna. Measure this range and memorise it, or write it down. 5. Take Tag 1 and place it next to the transmitting antenna so the ID request will move to the next stall. 6. Repeat the steps 5 and 6 for antenna Use Tag 2 to move the identification request to antenna Repeat the same procedure for all the antennas, using Tag 1 to move the ID request from odd to even stalls, and Tag 2 to move from even to odd stalls. 9. Put the FwAA back in normal operation mode, and reset the FwAA. AXG30000_FwAA~FwAAM Tech 29

30 4. Software settings Fullwood pedometer systems To activate the system in the parlour with feeding stations and have proper communication with the PC, a number of settings have to be made in the software. This chapter gives an overview and show some examples of settings. 4.1 Settings Crystal/ FusionNet systems Please refer to the UCC technical manual and Crystal Help for complete information about FusionNet and its configurations. Within the Configurator there are four (4) settings regarding the activity station. These settings are hidden by default. They can be made visible by activating the advanced settings in the configuration menu. Exclusive priority : This setting will give the antenna an exclusive priority, other antenna's won't start scanning. Only different ID's : This setting will cause the system to react only if the next cow is a other cow. For instance: a cow will not be gained access at a second visit, if no other cow has been identificated in between. Continuous Scanning : In case Continuously Scanning is set to NO, the system will stop scanning if an animal is identified, and start scanning again when the photo cell detects a cow. In case the setting Continuously Scanning is set to YES, the system will continue scanning as long as the photocell is activated. Activity recording ; This setting will enable the recording of the amount of steps set by the animal, If this setting is NO, the system will only read the tag number and NOT the activity. AXG30000_FwAA~FwAAM Tech 30

31 5. Trouble shooting This chapter describes procedures for trouble shooting when a FwAA/FwAAM pedometer identification system is malfunctioning. Reference is made to of the UCC, for problems related to the UCC controller inside the FwAA unit. The FwAA Toolbox is no longer mentioned or used, because it is no longer needed (the 7-segment display and the leds are now on the front of the FwAA itself) and therefore also not available anymore. 5.1 No identification at all 1. If the UCC is suspected to malfunction, check the UCC, chapter Trouble shooting and/or Local Diagnostics. 2. Reset the FwAA. 3. Put FwAA in test mode and test for identification. 5.2 No identification in test mode 1. None of the LED's of the FwAA-FwAAM are lighting or blinking: -24 VAC connector is not connected to the IDeal PCB segment displays on the FwAA shows '1' but 'Tx' indication LED is not blinking: -Check settings of all switches and jumpers on the IDeal PCB -Disconnect all wirings from IDeal PCB except 24 VAC and reset IDeal PCB. If 'Tx' LED still is not blinking replace the IDeal PCB or the complete FwAA segment display show '1', 'Tx' LED is blinking, but there is no field on the first antenna: -Disconnect all wirings from IDeal PCB except 24 VAC, connect one antenna to the first antenna connector of the IDeal PCB, set the PCB in two antenna mode and reset the PCB. -Check the setting of potentiometer P2 of the IDeal PCB. -Check the wiring between the IDeal PCB and first antenna -Check the antenna itself -Check jumpers and switches. -Replace the IDeal PCB. 5.3 Bad identification in test mode 1. 'Tx' LED is blinking: field is present around the antenna, but tags are not, or very difficult identified: -Check all wirings of IDeal PCB and antennas. -Check the GND connection of the IDeal PCB J12 to earth and to parlour frames. In series with this ground connection there should be a special low-pass filter as has been provided by Fusion, see chapter 3.3.3, Earthing the FwAA. -Switch off all electric devices in the neighbourhood of the system. If the ID comes back to normal, one or more of these electrical devices is a source of elecromagnetical noise. Try to eliminate this noise. 5.4 Proper Identification in test mode, but not in normal operation mode 1. The green lamps at the side of the FwAA-box are not lighting up if the FwAA is in walk-over mode: -Lamps are defective or wrongly connected. AXG30000_FwAA~FwAAM Tech 31

32 -'Feeder power' connection on the UCC is not linked to the 24 VAC power supply of FwAA -Fuse FHOL2 of the UCC PCB blown -Program on UCC PCB is not running properly, check the UCC, chapter Trouble shooting and/or Local Diagnostics. -Gates are not connected according to the diagram in chapter 3; Hardware installation & wiring. -Check for the right settings of all jumpers and switches of the UCC. -Check gate switch connections. -If previous mentioned items are OK, but still no proper function of FwAA: Reset system by disconnecting the power supply, wait 10 seconds and connect it again. -If above items do not solve problem replace UCC. 2. Green lamps at the side of FwAA are lighting up if FwAA in archway mode: -It has been longer than 10 minutes since the entry gates were opened. Close gates, wait one minute and open them again. -UCC does not communicate with IDeal PCB, check what kind of communication is used: RS232 or RS485. Check the wirings between the UCC s relevant communication connector and the IDeal connector 'J5'. 5.5 First cows of a batch is not identified with walk-over antennas Only the first cow of a batch is not identified: -Check function of entry gate. -Make sure the switch of the entry gate switches immediately when the gate opens, and not when the gate is (almost) complete open. -Enlarge distance between entry gate and walk-over antenna / / DISCLAIMER "As all FP Group Companies have a policy of continuous improvement, we reserve the right to alter any specification without prior notice.
