The controller retains its general functionality and contains pre-configured strategy to monitor and control the clock. The controller is contained in a metal box complete with glands for the supply and receiver cables, cable glanding grommets, and a short length of IN rail with an earthing terminal. The radio controlled clock consists of a desk or panel mounting display a junction box, and a remote antenna in a weatherproof box. The display indicates both the time and the signal strength Features Accurate system clock traceable to National Physical Lab. The controller incorporates special firmware to communicate with the radio controlled clock, to set the time and status bits in the controller, and to synchronise the system. The controller also contains some strategy to monitor the receiver status bits, control the clock, and indicate signal strength. RAIO CONTROLL CLOCK The radio controlled clock is connected to the /AT controller via the supervisor port (RJ11). It receives a radio signal and transmits it as an RS232 signal to the supervisor port. It tunes to the SF radio station at the NPL Rugby and must be within 1500 km (937.5 m) of the station; this covers UK and Ireland. The clock consists of the antenna, junction box, and display unit, connected together in that order and then to the /AT controller. antenna junction box screw terminals jack plug display unit RJ11 IQ212 The antenna is supplied in a weatherproof box. The cover can be removed using four screws to reveal the red signal indicator L. This will flash steadily every second if a good signal strength has been achieved. If the L is constantly on or off, the receiver is not getting a good signal. The antenna is supplied wired to the junction box by a 1300 mm cable. This can be rewired using 0.2 mm, core security or alarm cable (CAT 5 structured cable can also be used) up to a maximum length of 150 m. Junction box The junction box cover can be removed using one screw in order to fix it to the wall, or to rewire the connection to the antenna. It is fixed to a flat surface via 2 3 screws. The junction box has a 100 mm flying lead terminated in a jack plug which plugs into the display unit. isplay Unit The display unit can be mounted on the desk or on a panel. There are two holes in the rear of the unit which can either hold the panel mounting bracket, or two triangular plates which enable it to be stood on a desk. The panel mounting bracket screws to the panel with two 3 screws. panel fixing reset button The antenna box can be fixed to the wall using screws. suggestion for mounting antenna conduit desk mounting 20 coupling 2 IQ212/BOX/AT, Atomic Timemaster ata Sheet TA2007 Issue 2/B 2/10/02

3 ata Sheet IQ212/BOX/AT It has a jack socket in the side for connection to the flying lead from the junction box. It also has a flying lead terminated in an RJ11 plug for connection to the /AT controller supervisor port. The /AT controller connection carries both signal and power. The display normally shows the time (hh:mm:ss), a radio tower symbol, and the date in American format (mm:dd, i.e means 1th July). time # %! % $ radio pylon date isplay As the unit is powered up all the segments light for one second, and the time display starts counting seconds from zero. This indicates the start of the radio signal reception attempt. The signal strength is indicated by four signal strength bars running across the display from the top of the radio pylon. seconds count up! signal strength bars One bar means weak or no reception, bars mean excellent reception. When the radio station has been picked up the radio tower symbol starts blinking. After an average of 3½ minutes (3 to minutes) the actual time appears on the display and the radio tower stops blinking. If the clock cannot receive the time within seconds, it will enter an idle mode; the antenna symbol disappears from the display and the seconds count up. Further attempts will be made every hour until the unit picks up the time. The unit can be forced to restart its reception attempt by cycling its power (i.e. cycling the power to the /AT controller) with a 1 minute wait before re-powering, or by pressing the display s reset button. The reset button is a small pinhole button situated in the rear of the unit. Reception The receiver must be correctly orientated to receive the signal. It should be positioned as high as possible in a window or on an outside wall facing the radio station. The signal is strongest when the antenna is orientated at right angles to the signal from Rugby. The antenna box should be mounted with its junction box cable coming from the bottom of the antenna box and a face of the antenna box facing Rugby. cable to junction box at bottom of unit antenna view onto top of unit right angles to signal Rugby transmitter The recommended method is to remove the antenna cover to view the signal strength L and orientate the antenna so that the L stops flashing, indicating minimum signal strength. Then rotate the antenna by 90, and check that the signal strength L consistently flashes at 1 second intervals. c a b The signal strength is also indicated in the display as described above and should be a minimum of 3 bars. Signal strength can also be measured by a voltmeter connected to output channel 1 (OUT1/ AO); the signal range is 0 to 5 V, and should be 3 V or greater. It should take an average 3.5 minutes (3 to minutes) for the receiver to establish valid time and date information after it is powered up. Once the /AT controller firmware has established a signal strength of 3 bars or greater (3 V or greater), it will synchronise. It is recommended that attempts should be made for a greater signal strength (e.g. bars or 5 V) by making smaller angular changes to the receiver position, cycling the power with a 1 minute wait before re-powering for each attempt, and checking the signal strength bars, or the voltage reading. After synchronization, if there is a communications fault between the /AT controller and the receiver, a subsequent attempt at synchronisation will generate a Receiver Comms Fail alarm, but if the synchronisation was due to a power cycle, it will still show the previous signal strength. For a full system test, change the time of one of the controllers being synchronised, induce a synchronisation by cycling the /AT controller s power, and check the controller is resynchronised with the correct time. The following sources of interference may prevent reception of a strong signal: omestic appliances without radio interference suppression Computer monitors closer than 2 metres away TV receivers closer than 2 metres away achinery with high H.F leakage Poor atmospheric conditions (e.g. stormy weather) Poor reception may also be experienced in low lying areas, or in metal clad buildings. Signal strength improves at night so leaving the receiver overnight may establish the time and date. Gaps in Reception The radio station may be subject to routine maintenance, so the station should be contacted directly to check for details of shutdowns (Rugby tel.: + (0) ). The receiver will maintain accurate time to an accuracy of 0.01 seconds maximum drift per 2 hour period that the radio time is not available. aylight Saving, BST/UTC The Atomic time used is UTC, Coordinated Universal Time which is the agreed international atomic time (with minor corrections for earth s rotation etc.). This is approximately the same as GT. BST, British Summer Time is 1 hour ahead of UTC. The receiver gives three status indications: BST is in effect: When this status is one it means the current time is summer time, BST. When this status is zero, the current time is GT. UTC is in effect: The logical inverse of BST is in effect. BST/UTC change impending: This status is one for the half hour before the change from GT to BST or vice versa from BST to GT. 4 IQ212/BOX/AT ata Sheet /AT CONTROLLR The /AT controller consists of an IQ212 with special firmware and a small amount of pre-configured strategy. /AT Firmware The /AT controller has additional firmware to communicate with the receiver and to synchronise the IQ timer module and the rest of the system. It also sets values and status in the arrays as listed below and has one switch module to inhibit time update: B28,0 BST/UTC change impending B28,1 BST is in effect B28,2 UTC is in effect B29,0 AT Receiver Valid Time B29,1 One attempt since 3:00 am Successful B3 Cable/Receiver Failure B31,0 Inhibit Time Update A220 Signal Strength /AT Strategy The pre-configured strategy installed in the /AT controller takes the values and status set by the /AT firmware in the arrays, and makes them available as internal digital inputs. 5 ata Sheet IQ212/BOX/AT /AT Strategy (continued) Signal Strength With reference to the strategy diagram, the signal strength from analogue node 220 is monitored by S12 (Signal Strength). The sensor is logged at both 15 minute and 1 minute intervals by plotting channels 1 and 2 respectively. The signal strength is in the range 0 to 5 (with a good signal being greater than 3). Function module F2 rescales the signal to 0 to 50. The output of F2 drives the analogue driver 1 to give a signal of 0 to 5 V on output channel 1 (OUT1/AO). Time Update Failure The logic module G1 generates internal digital input I9 when either /AT controller hasn t a valid time, or if there hasn t been one successful attempt since 3:00 am. The required state of I9 is 0, and its alarm is enabled so that it will generate a Time Update Failure alarm (if the alarm target address and Lan are set up) if the time is invalid, or if there isn t a single successful update in a 2 hour period. Internal igital Inputs Logic module G3 generates internal digital input I11 from the logical combination of BST is in effect and not UTC is in effect. Logic modules G2,and G generate internal digital inputs I10 and I12 from the BST/UTC change impending and Cable/Receiver Failure signals respectively. The internal digitals are labelled as listed below. The required state of I12 is set to 0, and its alarm is enabled so that it will generate a Receiver Comms Fail alarm (if the alarm target address and Lan are set up) if there is a cable or receiver failure. Inhibit Time Update Switch 1, Inhibit Time Update (W1) causes G5 to set bit 31,0 which causes the receiver to stop updating the controller. HARWAR Box: The /AT controller is enclosed in a metal box which has cable glanding grommets in the lower edge and a single grommet in the top edge for signal and network cables. It also has a strain relief gland for the /AT receiver cable, and an 20 gland for the supply cable. The box contains the /AT controller (IQ212) and a 150 mm length of IN rail. A single earth terminal is supplied installed on the IN rail to facilitate connection of mains supply earth. Receiver: The receiver consists of three parts, the antenna, junction box, and the display unit as described above (see functionality, Radio Controlled Clock). /AT Controller: The /AT controller is an IQ212 with additional firmware and some pre-configured strategy. All the features of a standard IQ212 controller at v3.01 firmware level are available for use other than a few small exceptions as listed below. The standard controller details are given in the IQ21x data sheet, TA200012: The pre-configured strategy uses some of the modules, and array nodes (as shown in diagram above) Output channel 1 (OUT1/AO) is used for the signal strength voltage output. The receiver uses the local supervisor port, so a local supervisor cannot be connected; the controller can only be configured via the network. Strategy Backup :It is recommended that the pre-configured strategy should be backed up to create a AT default file. If required, additional strategy can be added to this strategy observing the special array values and taking care not to overwrite the modules. This strategy should be backed up separately. 6 IQ212/BOX/AT ata Sheet SYST The /AT acts as a special timemaster. It will automatically synchronise a complete building management system, but if the system has autodialled sections, these should have their own timemasters. The /AT will synchronise all controllers on the system by sending out a global global time synchronisation message on power up and every hour, as long as the receiver has received one valid signal in the last 2 hours (see Time Update Failure, I9). [The actual reception attempt occurs at 5 minutes past the hour, and it requires 3 minutes of continuous reception as it receives further data, so the system synchronisation should occur at 8 minutes past the hour approximately.] The global global time message is acceptable to both IQLs and IQs, so the /AT will synchronise the whole system (excluding autodialled controllers). Since this message uses attribute comms, if an IQ or IQL on the system has a PIN set up, the /AT must have an identical password as that set up in the controller and with level 99. In order that any traditional IQ timemasters on the system do not interfere with the AT synchronisation, the AT will automatically null down their timemaster functionality. It will do this on power up and at.05 am each day. Traditional timemaster functionality is switched on by setting the time module change by value to non-zero. (Note that the AT does not require this to be done in order for it to act as a timemaster.) The /AT will stop any other controller from being a timemaster (including stopping its own traditional time master functionality, if set up) by sending out a global global message that clears all controllers time module change by values to zero. INSTALLATION The antenna is weatherproof (IP5) and can be mounted outside the building if necessary. All the other parts must be mounted inside the building. The installation procedure involves: ount /AT controller, display unit, and junction box in position connect units together and to antenna If necessary extend cable between antenna and junction box connect power (do not switch on) Perform IQ212 installation Switch on power to unit Open antenna box Check signal strength by observing L and re-orientating receiver as appropriate Check signal strength on display (or AT controller voltage output) Permanently mount antenna Configure strategy to: use /AT parameters set up timemaster function Test system Backup configuration Full details of IQ212 installation are given in IQ21x series installation instructions, TG Additional details required for /AT installation are given in IQ212/BOX/AT installation instructions TG IQ212/BOX/AT, Atomic Timemaster ata Sheet TA2007 Issue 2/B 2/10/02
