Smart Materials and Intelligent System Design at IIT Kanpur Bishakh Bhattacharya This talk presents a brief overview of my lab at IIT Kanpur. It also brings out how starting from modelling and experimental studies in the field of smart structures, we have diverged to a broad field of enabling technology through synthesis, and subsequently, converging to develop intelligent products with varied applications. SMSS Lab, May, 2012

Active & Hybrid Vibration Control

Design of a Vibration Isolation System Using Magnetic Damper Traansmiss sibility Amplitude at Resonance Bandwidth Slope Resonance Frequency Frequency Resonance frequency & cut off frequency should be as small as possible Amplitude at resonance must be as low as possible Slope of transmissibility curve at higher frequencies should be as less as possible

Active & Hybrid Vibration Control SEM Image of PZT PDMS (0%, 20%, 70% 80%) Kulkarni, Bhattacharya and Sharma, 2006

Application in Product Design A Green Energy Harvesting Device Quantitative parameters: 1. Power output between 0.8 to 1Watt 2. Voltage between 3.5 to 5.2 Volt 3. Overall length 115 mm 4. Overall width 55 mm 5. Overall height 75 mm MACRO MICRO SHAPE & VIBRATION CONTROL OF PARABOLIC SPACE ANTENNA Banerjee, Bhattacharya & Mallik (2009), Kudikala, Deb and Bhattacharya (2010), Singh, Munjal and Bhattacharya (2011)

Self Configurable Modular Robot(s) Multiple identical mobile robots Two or more modules can assemble autonomously into one unit to Perform complex tasks like obstacle climbing, crossing crevices, etc. In dissembled phase, it can disperse out to perform search operation, or work in cooperation like carrying a heavy payload

Dynamic Response based Structural Health Monitoring Experimental Modal Analysis Time domain Dynamic Strain Response Freq. Dom. Signal Analysis Curvature Damage Factor Anand, Fleming and Bhattacharya, 2011

Inflated Torus Structures Minimal launch mass and volume In the proposed design of flexible torus structure hence it will be necessary to have precise control of flexible boundary layers of the system. The system being inherently geometrically nonlinear, 3D experimental modal analysis is necessary

Application in Product Design Agarwal, Ogai and Bhattacharya, h 2011

Application in Product Design SmartMulti Sensor Data Fusion Technology Development in the Context of Medical Device for Pressure Ulcer Management Jointly with SGPGI, Lucknow In principle approval received from BARC

Major Projects Mechanical Engg. Hybrid Damping of Flexible Manipulator Development of Smart Compliant Mechanism Development of Reconfigurable Parabolic Antenna Optimal Vibration Control of Composite Structuret Design of Inflatable Antenna System Design Programme Development of Automatic Turn Indicator System Design of Pipe Health Monitoring System Design of Autonomous Water Cleaning System [Design Clinic] Design Innovation Centre

From IPD to EPD (Emergent Product Design) Emergent System Design involves Meta Design of an array of Intelligent Systems which can dynamicallyself organize to perform complex task profile. Design of Intelligent Systems based on Nano technology [bottom up approach] Bio inspired Design Structure Motion & Energy Harvesting Evolutionary System Design
