1 Capacitive Sensors Cylindrical... Surface Mount...8 Capacitive Capacitive proximity sensors use noncontact sensing and solid-state circuitry to detect the presence of metal or nonmetal targets. They are similar in size and shape to inductive sensors, but unlike inductive sensors, they react to changes in capacitance caused by the presence of a target. Capacitive sensors can be used to detect the presence of metals, but are also suited for nonmetallic targets. They have the added advantage of being able to detect liquids, plastics and wood, and are often the answer for those applications where other sensing technologies have not worked properly. The sensitivity of the capacitance sensor is affected by the dielectric constant of the target material being detected. The higher the dielectric constant, the more sensitive a capacitive sensor is to that target. This is why this sensor is ideal for applications such as liquid level sensing or product filling operations. Engineered for enhanced flexibility, capacitive sensors are especially suited to a variety of production applications: evel control of bulk solids iquid level control Final inspection of packaging procedures Plastic parts detection Wood detection Pepperl+Fuchs offers capacitive sensors in cylindrical and surface mount housings that provide sensing ranges from mm to 0 mm. Some models are available with potentiometers that allow you to make adjustments to fine-tune the sensor for your application. In the F6 series the sensor design has been further extended by integrating the sensor electrode within the printed circuit board of the internal electronics. This greatly improved the shielding and the EMC resistance. This series can therefore be installed directly on metal or connected to each other side by side. When properly selected, the see through capability and tie wrap mounting style allow the sensor to be used for flow monitoring in hoses and synthetic pipes. The permitted wall thicknesses and materials and the suitable media can be found in the following tables. When properly selected, a capacitive sensor is able to see through certain nonmetallic objects and sense the objects behind them. This makes it the obvious choice for level detection, sensing the presence of liquids or granular material through the container wall. In this case the sensor does not need to pierce the side of your container or physically contact your target material to function reliably. We also offer sensor mounting wells that allow the sensor to be mounted through the side wall of a vessel, allowing it to have more surface exposed to the target liquid. We offer - and -wire DC and AC models, and AMUR output styles. Most models are available in various housing diameters and lengths so that you can select the sensor to fit in your application. 2 Capacitive Technical: Capacitive The active components of a capacitive sensor consist of a disk-shaped sensor electrode and a cup shaped shield (Fig. ). These two electrodes form a capacitor with a base capacitance of CG. and the capacitance will change by the amount ΔC as a target approaches the sensor at distance(s). This total capacitance is part of an RC generator whose output voltage U is dependent on the effective capacity Ca = CG + ΔC between the sensor electrode and the shield potential. 13 Surface Mount Capacitive Sensors Our surface mount capacitive sensors are available in various rectangular housing styles from ultraslim, low-profile rectangular to long-range flat pack housings. Rectangular sensors are available in low profile packages with sensing ranges up to 0 mm. These sensors are ideal for locations with limited mounting space available. Flat pack sensors offer the longest available sensing range, up to 0 mm, and are available with potentiometers that allow you to make adjustments to fine-tune the sensor for your application. Our ultraslim, tie-mounts are ideally suited for point level control in flat-walled vessels and flow/no flow indication in plastic tubing. We also offer versions with PVDF housings that withstand corrosive media.
