15 Glossary Attenuation Reduction of the optical signal power in a fiber, a splice or between two connectors. It depends on the wavelength. Measured in db (decibels). A=10*log (P in / Pout ). Aramid Yarn (Kevlar) Strength member used to provide longitudinal support for connector retention, Offers some cable cut-through resistance. Armoring Protective layer between jacketing layers which provides protection against severe mechanical and chemical environments. Bandwidth The information capacity of a channel. Bandwidth is a measure of the difference between the upper and lower limiting frequencies of that channel. Bandwidth is normally measured in Hertz (cycles per second). The wider the bandwidth, the more information can be transmitted. Broad band Denotes data transmission capabilities exceeding that of standard direct modulation transmission found in high grade voice communications. Broad band allows several simultaneous channel transmissions due to the propagation of a carrier signal. Bend radius (minimum) Radius to which a fiber or cable can be bent before breakage or excessive signal attenuation occurs. Cladding The entire optical material of an optical fiber enveloping the core. Its index of refraction is somewhat lower than that of the core. Coating A material directly over the cladding which protects the fiber from the environment. Connector Component for the detachable connection of two optical fibers. Core The central region of an optical fiber through which light is transmitted. Dispersion Causes band width limitations and broadens the input pulse along the fiber length. Components of dispersion are A) model dispersion in multi-fiber caused by varying optical path length, B) material dispersion caused by differential delay on various wave length of light signal in fiber, C) dispersion found in both signal an d multi-mode fiber which is caused by length entering and traveling in both core and cladding materials. Decibel [db] Measure of the attenuation of the power transported. Fresnel reflection The refraction losses of a portion light signal due to difference in refraction index which occurs at the air/glass interfaces at the entrance and exit ands of optical fibers. Fusion Splice A permanent joint accomplished by melting two optical fibers together. Graded-index fiber Glass fiber type whose core exhibits a refraction index profile with an index of refraction decreasing in the from of a parabola from the inside to the outside. This allows better dispersion and transmission characteristics to be achieved. Hybrid cable Cable with different transmission lines such as optical fibers, copper and conductors, RF conductors. Jelly From "petroleum jelly".one of the tixotropic fluids used as water blocking agent within multi-fiber tubes (also known as gel). Loose tube An optical fiber tube where the fiber and its protective coating are protected by a plastic tube. The cavity in between is either dry or filled with jelly. Multi-fiber cable Fiber type in whose core several modes can be propagated. Typical dimensions are 50/125 microns and 62.5/125 microns. Modem (optical) Receive and transmitting device which converts electrical analog or digital signal into a corresponding optical signal. Microbending Curvature of a fiber which causes loss of light and consequently an increase in attenuation of the fiber. Multiplexer (Mux) A device often capable of bidirectional data transmission which puts two or more signals into a signal channel. Numerical aperture Light gathering capabilities of a fiber. Dependent on the difference in index of refraction between the core and the cladding. Optical Waveguide Another name for an optical fiber. Patch cord A short fiber optic cable with connectors on both ends. Plenum Duct work inside the building in which cables are routed. Return loss Ratio of the input light power to the returned power of an optical system component in an optical transmission path. Measured in decibels (db) Repeater A fiber optic transmitter and receiver connected back-to-back to extend the operating range of a system. Singlemode fiber Fiber type in whose core only one mode can be propagated. A typical dimension is 9/125 microns. Splice Permanent joint between two optical fibers ruptured in a plane, created by fusion, clamping or gluing. Step index fiber Glass fiber type with a core exhibiting a constant index of refraction. WAN Wide Area Network World-spanning network for the transmission of information. WDM/DWDM WDM/DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) instead of sending one wavelength through the fiber, light rays of various wavelength are generated. Commercial DWDM systems put 32 wavelength through the fiber, which corresponds, at a rate of 10 Gigabits/s per signal to a total rate of 320 Gigabits. 15
