Features Software programmable Power Line Carrier (PLC) unit for the transmission of speech, data and protection signals Latest signal processor technology permits tailor-made solutions for each specific application, with optimal operating behaviour, even under the most adverse line conditions Optional fitting with digital multiplexer AMX500 for operation with data rates up to 64 kbps Adaptive adjustment of the data rate according to the prevailing line characteristics Integrated, software programmable protection signalling equipment NSD550 for maximum performance Integrated NSK5 data modem for lowspeed data channels for SCADA applications Three transmission power classes (5 watt, 40 watt, 80 watt) available, utilizable according to line conditions Programmable over the carrier frequency range 24 to 500 khz Operation with 1 or 2 transmission channels Direct Digital frequency Synthesis (DDS) provides maximum stability of the frequency conversion Standard interfaces for speech transmission and telecontrol applications Modular compact design for minimum hardware expenditure and maximum reliability Windows based Man-Machine Interface MMI500 Embedded Operations Channel (EOC) for remote monitoring and remote configuration of the equipment Remote access via Internet and dial-up modem Meets or exceeds IEC and IEC requirements Complies with safety and electromagnetic capability (EMC) requirements of the European Community (EC) Applications The fully digital ETL500 Power Line Carrier set is a multipurpose equipment designed for the transmission of speech, data and protection signals over power lines or cables. The equipment can be used on power lines of any voltage level or length. Moreover, with the considerably enhanced transmission capacity provided by the digital add-on facility AMX500, several new applications can be identified. The frequency congestion problem is considerably relieved, as several times more information can be packed into the same carrier frequency band, therefore fewer RF carrier channels are needed. With 64 kbps transmission rate, a cost-efficient interconnection between digital wideband networks can be established. High-capacity PLC link is also best suited to serve as a back-up path for vital information conveyed through fibre-optic or microwave links. 2

An ETL500 equipped with the AMX500 may replace 2 to 4 existing analogue PLC links and therefore provides a solution to bottlenecks in the existing PLC network. For a given number of services, the number of PLC channels needed can be reduced significantly and therefore frequency allocation becomes easier. The example beside illustrates how the frequency allocation scheme can be Station A B C D E Transmission lines 4 khz steps Digital PLC relieves the problem of frequency congestion Tx Rx Analog PLC Digital PLC replaced 3

made less dense if analogue carrier sets are replaced by their digital counterparts. This provides frequency space for the new carrier channels to be allocated. Back-up of wideband communication links With the standard serial data interface according to ITU-T X.21 provided by the AMX500, the system is prepared for being connected to a PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy) multiplexer. This opens up a variety of options for accessing to a digital wideband network. At the outskirts of a power system communications network there is usually low-density traffic which does not justify the investment for a high-capacity fibre installation. With digital PLC equipment, a lowcost tributary link to the wideband backbone system may be installed as an alternative. Customer benefits Robust design The ETL500 concept is based on ABB s long experience in the field of power line carrier equipment. The electrical and the mechanical design make use of the most advanced technologies. Design principles proven in the area of power system communication enable the ETL500 equipment to withstand harsh environmental conditions. Whilst using latest processor technology, the number of modules could be greatly reduced. The shrinking of the hardware to a bare minimum ensures maximum reliability. Furthermore, the reduced number of different spare parts results in considerable cost savings. Wideband system PDH/SDH 2 Mbps to 622 Mbps X.21 X.21 X.21 AMX 500 PLC Narrowband Back-up 64 kbps NSD 550 NSD 550 Back-up systems for backbone channels X.21 AMX 500 Digital PLC is also a favourable alternative when there is a need to establish stand-by routes for critical services in high-capacity networks, i.e. fibre-optic links and microwave links. The ETL505 with 5 watt power output consists of one 19 subrack, 6 units high, comprising the complete set of functional modules. Application of this type of equipment is adequate for medium voltage power lines of short to moderate distance. For the ETL540 / ETL580 versions, one respectively two more subracks of 3 units high, comprising the power modules, have to be added. The 40 watt or 80 watt power output is needed for applications on longer high-voltage power lines. The front picture displays the tier block complement of the ETL540 together with AMX500. Enhanced transmission capacity The use of a new type, adaptive, digital transmission procedure permits maximum utilization of the transmission capacity of a PLC channel. The high-efficiency transmission is achieved by the functional unit AMX500, comprising signal converter, multiplexer and additional modules for the speech compression. 4

Investment protection Any PLC equipment can be retrofitted with the AMX500 to increase capacity. This enables existing communication infrastructure to be used more efficiently without the need for high reinvestment. For example, one AMX500 is often sufficient for the additional transfer of a few speech and data services; the requirement for costly wideband equipment is dispensed with. The concept allows for a seamless transition from an ETL500 equipment working in standard mode to a PLC set operated in high-capacity mode by adding the AMX500 unit housed in its own subrack. Retrofitting and upgrading an ETL500 equipment into one working in high-capacity mode is possible any time on site. Frequency allocation in an existing network will remain unaffected, i.e. there is no need to change line traps and coupling filters. Operational flexibility, modes of operation Unique features, such as single-step digital frequency conversion, automatic channel equalization, configurable AF options, event recorder, built-in test facilities, to name just a few, add to the operational flexibility. The Direct Digital Synthesis method, which is used to generate the RF signal, results in excellent quality and stability of the AF to RF and RF to AF conversions. The carrier frequency parameters detailed below are easily configured by means of the userfriendly MMI500. Carrier frequency: Can be set in steps of 500 Hz in the frequency range from 24 to 500 khz Number of channels: 1 or 2 Channel-bandwidth: 4 or 8 khz Position of the individual sidebands: Can be configured individually to be in the upright or inverted position The ETL500 design is unique as it combines robustness and transparency of analogue equipment with the advantage of increased transmission capacity provided by digital transmission equipment. This feature makes the equipment compatible with existing analogue PLC systems and results in outstanding flexibility with regard to the applications. The system may be used in various modes of operation depending on the requirements, type of services, line conditions, etc. Three examples illustrate possible ways of using a given frequency band and demonstrate the versatility of the ETL500 system. Example 1: When using ETL500 single channel equipment the capacity can considerably be enhanced by adding the AMX500 unit. A possible configuration is illustrated below. This arrangement permits a data channel with a transmission rate of 4800 bps to be superimposed above the speech channel, within which the tones for protection signalling are allocated. With this configuration one channel may be exploited for operational speech combined with teleprotection and low-speed data for SCADA application, whilst the other channel may convey highspeed data and several compressed speech channels. Example 3: The illustration above on the right side shows an ETL500 single channel equipment requiring 8 khz band, but configured to work in high-speed mode using the entire bandwidth. With this configuration a transmission rate up to 64 khz may be obtained under favourable line conditions. A possible subdivision of the available capacity among different services may be as follows: 2 speech channels 1 data channels 19.2 kbps synchronous 3 data channels 2.4 kbps asynchronous. Optimum performance of the teleprotection service is ensured by the NSD550 which operates entirely independent of the AMX500 unit. Easy commissioning, testing, supervision, and maintenance All operating states are monitored, recorded, and evaluated by the CPU module P4LQ, which also takes care of the frequency up-and-down conversion. The ETL500 comes with the software MMI500, which is a Windows based program running on any standard PC. When a serial port of the PC is connected to the SUB-D connector on the frontplate of the module P4LQ, the MMI500 implements a man-machineinterface (MMI) for the ETL500, supporting commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, supervision, and maintenance. In addition to the alarms displayed by the MMI500, LEDs on the front panel light up when an alarm is activated. Appropriate actions on the module are started and there are three switchover relay contacts available for issuing an alarm. Eight more relay contacts can be provided with the optional alarm relay module R1BC. Two alarm criteria which can be associated with these contacts may be specified and 6

entered by means of the MMI500. Non-critical alarm situations are signalled as deferred alarms. For network extensions, Tx and Rx filters can be simply re-tuned on site with the aid of two tuning adapters and a level meter. Man-machine interface MMI500 The MMI500, a 32-bit Windows program running on any standard PC, offers: Off line configuration of an ETL500 terminal with the facility for saving the settings in a file for later use, e.g. download it when an ETL500 equipment has to be configured accordingly. Configuration and supervision of both the local and the remote terminal of an ETL500 link from either side of the link. Dialog windows to configure all the settings of the ETL500 equipment, e.g. carrier frequency characteristics, alarm parameters, AF interface functions, NSD550 parameters, equipment identification, etc. View windows displaying detailed status and alarm information of the ETL500 in text or graphic form, which can be copied into documents, printed out or saved to a file. Measuring facilities which can access a number of AF test points internal to the ETL500 and display the signals in graphic form in the frequency domain format. Automatic channel equalization of amplitude and group-delay response of the complete AF band in both transmission directions from one side of the link. Graphic display of the equalized and of the non-equalized frequency response is provided. The information can be printed out or saved. Automatic polling and logging of alarms to a file in the PC. Data anisochronous E & M Signalling Speech + inband signalling Teleoperation (Modem, FSK) Speech, E & M Signalling, Inband signalling, FAX Data, synch., asynch. 64 kbps, RS-422, X.21 Teleprotection Assistance for tuning and testing of the local ETL500 terminal. All signals needed for tuning and testing the RF filters and AF options are generated. Help utility with explanations for all actions supported by the MMI. Event recorder for 1000 teleprotection events and 1000 alarm events with a time resolution of 1 ms if synchronized to a GPS clock. When the ETL500 equipment is integrated in a network management system, each equipment can be accessed via a unique device number. The architecture of the digital PLC equipment ETL500 The schematic block diagram below shows an overview of the simple and extremely practical system architecture. The construction of a full PLC multipurpose equipment requires only a few functional units which communicate via the internal bus. The basic unit comprises solely the interface for the Block diagramm ETL500 + AMX500 NSK5 O4LE AMX500 G4AI System Bus P4LQ NSD 550 processing Supervision AF / RF Conversion Line Interface RF Alarms 7

speech and telecontrol signals O4LE, the separate command interface for the protection signal transmission G4AI and the central processor unit P4LQ which deals with the various signal processing and monitoring functions. Where required, the modem NSK5 is available for transferring low-speed data for SCADA applications. Also required is the line interface via which the signal exchange takes place from and to the coupling unit. The degree of utilization of the channel capacity can be considerably increased by using the digital multiplexer / signal converter AMX500. An essential feature is the fact that mission critical services can be conducted via modules operated separately from the AMX500 unit. The rigorous demands of these critical services with respect to transmission time and interference can be satisfied excellently by this separation. The configuration and monitoring of the system takes place by PC via the diagnostic interface. Central processor unit P4LQ The following central functions are executed on the functional unit P4LQ: Digital SSB (Single Side Band) modulation in the DDS procedure Central monitoring of the hardware and software functions Generation and evaluation of the pilot signal for a wide range of functions Frequency synchronization Signal quality monitoring Automatic frequency response measurement and channel equalizing Serial interface for PC connection for the equipment configuration and monitoring RF line interface The line interface comprises all the functional units necessary for the transmission and receive side signal coupling to the high-voltage line. These are the power amplifier, RF hybrid, transmit and receive filters. ETL500 equipment is available in 3 power classes: ETL505 with 5 watt output power Application of this type of equipment is adequate for medium voltage power lines of short to moderate distance. ETL540 / ETL580 with 40 watt and 80 watt output power 40 watt or 80 watt output power is needed for applications on long high-voltage power lines. AF interface O4LE The universal interface module O4LE provides an audio frequency interface for the following applications: Telephony Point-to-point hot line Remote subscriber 4-wire PABX interface with E&M 2/4-wire PABX interface with E&M and hybrid control Service telephone Teleoperation Transmission of audio frequency data signals from modems Programmable transit filter Connection of external teleprotection equipment, such as NSD70C External teleprotection equipment Signal boosting control The unit is fully programmable via PC / MMI500. 8

Integrated teleprotection equipment NSD550 General The NSD550 teleprotection equipment is used for the transmission of protection commands in highvoltage networks. The equipment is used exclusively together with type ETL500 PLC equipment. It is always assigned to the first channel in case of a dual-channel PLC. The NSD550 signals are processed completely digitally on the RF-converter module P4LQ of the basic ETL500 equipment. The NSD550 comprises at least one relay interface module type G4AI for command transmission. As contact multipliers or to exploit all possible NSD550 functions, 1 or 2 additional interface modules can be plugged in the channel subrack. Optimized algorithms for PLC channels Using digital signal processing technologies, the NSD550 meets the stringent requirements for command transmission over PLC links even under the most adverse channel conditions. Algorithms optimized for PLC channels ensure dependable and secure operation and short transmission delays. Remote Supervision & Configuration Configuration, supervision and adapting to the specific requirements is effected by means of the MMI500 user interface. Event recorder and trip counter Integrated trip counters for each command and an event recorder which stores more than 2000 command start/stop and alarm events support troubleshooting and investigations in case of faults or abnormal conditions in the high-voltage network. The events are stored with time stamp in a nonvolatile memory. The event recorder can be synchronized to an external GPS receiver for accurate time stamping. The display of events is possible in text and graphic views on the MMI500. Applications NSD550 meets all requirements for blocking, permissive and direct tripping. Depending on the application requirements, NSD550 can transmit up to four commands with two different modes of operation, i.e. either 2 permissive + 2 direct trip, or 3 permissive + 1 direct trip commands. Four commands permit, for example, the protection of dual-circuit lines and direct tripping for reactor or breaker failure protection. NSD550 requires no extra bandwidth because it uses the pilot of the PLC as a guard signal and the speech band as command channel. Integrated data modem NSK5 General The integrated data modem NSK5 is used mainly for the transfer of low-speed data with SCADA systems. The module is plugged in to the channel subrack like any other AF-interface card. All functions are incorporated on a single card. This permits especially low-cost solutions when building up telecontrol networks. Several modems can be plugged in where necessary. Principal features Full programmability; baud rate, transmit and receive frequencies, also Tx/Rx levels are simple to set via switches and jumpers. All channels and baud rates corresponding to ITU-T R.35, R.37. R.38A and R.38B are supported. Operation is also possible with the following channels: maximum three 600 baud channels, 9

one 1200 baud channel for frequencies above 2000 Hz (speech) or in combination with other low-speed data channels; one 1200 baud channel corresponding to ITU-T V.23 or one 2400 baud channel. Distortion of the characteristic is minimized by a help module for synchronization, a data regenerator and equalizer. A serial data interface corresponding to ITU-T V.24, V.28, and V.10 is available with front access for test purposes. The modem is electrically isolated from the ETL500 modules. A local loop test is possible. It can be initialized either via the test switch on the front panel or the corresponding interface line. The bit error rate can be tested over the total line length. Multiplexer/converter unit AMX500 In an endeavour to enhance the transmission capacity of the available PLC frequency spectrum, a great deal of effort has been spent investigating more efficient signalling methods for power line carrier application. Principal features Transmission speed is automatically adjusted to the prevailing channel conditions in order to ensure maximum system availability, e.g. if data transmission at a set speed suffers from insufficient quality because of poor line conditions, fall-back to an appropriate lower transmission rate will restore the quality of service to the level required. Robust, bandwidth-efficient digital modulation Adaptive adjustment to the channel characteristics Adjustable bandwidth The bandwidth of the transmission system can be individually set between 1000 and 7300 Hz for each application. 8 different bandwidths are available. Flexible data rate programming The data rate of the AMX500 is programmable over the range 1200 bps to 64 kbps. The fine adjustment facility of the transmission rate permits optimal capacity utilization of the presently available bandwidth. The illustration below shows an example of bit rate utilization possibilities with 4 khz gross bandwidth of the transmission channel. Possible programming of the user bit rate with a 4 khz bandwidth PLC equipment ETL500 with the optional add-on unit AMX500 using techniques such as low bit-rate speech coding combined with time domain multiplexing and digital modulation can provide several times the transmission capacity per link under good line conditions, compared to traditional PLC circuits Programming examples for a data rate of 19.2 kbps Speech 7.2 kbps Speech 7.2 kbps Speech 4.8 kbps Sync Data 19.2 kbps Async Data 4.8 kbps Sync Data 9.6 kbps Speech 4.8 kbps Async Data 2.4 kbps Anisync Data 1.2 kbps Sync Data 4.8 kbps Speech 4.8 kbps Async Data 1.2 kbps The data rate depends on the available bandwidth and the channel characteristics 10 Up to 28.8 kbps in 4 khz bandwidth and up to 64 kbps in 8 khz bandwidth (each direction)

Planning information The following diagram is for supporting the planning of PLC links with digital transmission, i.e. when using the AMX500. Represented is the relation between bit rate and necessary signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) for a given maximum bit error rate and bandwidth. The bit rates shown are for the net bandwidths 1.4 / 1.7 / 2.1 / 3.3 and 7.0 khz and for a bit error rate (BER) of The curves are based on a large number of field and simulation tests. Example: A noise ratio of 37 db is necessary with a 3.3 khz bandwidth for a transmission rate of 28.8 khz.
