15 Water penetration test The purpose of the test is to check that all the interstices of a cable are sufficiently filled to prevent water penetration within the cable. A 25 mm sheath is removed 3 m from one end of the cable sample. The exposed cable core is then placed in 1 m height of water horizontally, containing a sufficient quantity of water soluble fluorescent dye, for 24 hours at the temperature of (25 ± 5) C. No dye shall be detected when end of the 3 m length is examined with ultra violet light. For test method refer to IEC Method F Compound flow test The purpose of this test is to verify that filling and flooding compounds will not flow from a filled fibre cable. A cable sample of 30 cm length with sheath material removed and cable core exposed. Suspend the test samples in an air oven with the flared end of the cable pointing downward. Condition the test samples for a period of 24 h at a temperature of (50 + 5) C. At the end of this test period, there shall be no evidence of dripping of compound from either the core or sheath interfaces. For test method refer to IEC Method E14.
