1 Q & A Considerations When Configuring and Selecting for Microphone Systes With the growing deand of recent years for both greater physical cofort and savings in energy consuption, systes incorporating digital control based on the latest advances in electronics are coing into wider use for air conditioning and lighting systes. As all these systes coe on line, we cannot help but be reinded of the fact that the wiring used for these digital control systes generates pulse-based electroagnetic noise of the kind that affects the very delicate signals used in icrophone lines. Microphone cables are designed to carry a range of signals that span the spectru fro / of a volt (0 V) to /,000,000 ( μv). One sall error in wiring procedure or cable selection and the entire icrophone syste turns into an antenna collecting the surrounding noise. The following section uses a question and answer forat to cover a list of the essential points for configuring icrophone systes. Q Under what sort of conditions should a two-conductor icrophone cable be used? The two-conductor icrophone cable is suited to environents where noise is not such a great factor and the audio signals are in the coparatively high -0 db to 0 db level range. In such cases, the two-conductor cable offers the advantages of saller diaeter and lower cost. Of course if icrophone level, rather than line level, is the criterion being used, star quad cable should be used instead. Fig. Noise induced in two-conductor shielded cable (MVVS) Q Under what conditions should star quad icrophone cable be used? This type is used for environents with a higher noise factor and where audio signals are in the low -0 db or less range. This type of cable perfors well under noise conditions that exceed the capacity of the twoconductor shielded cable, effectively shielding out over ninety percent ore noise. (See Figs., ) However, should this type be routed alongside a power cable of any significant capacity it should probably be encased in etal conduit just to be safe. Q Isn t star quad cable expensive? The cost for this type of cable has fallen significantly in recent years. Several decades ago, cost was so prohibitive a factor that only large usical auditorius and broadcasting facilities could afford the. Canare succeeded in developing a low-cost star quad cable using aluinu foil in 9. In addition to traditional professional facilities, this type gained wide use in such non-traditional areas as wedding halls and school lecture roos. Fig. Noise induced in star quad cable (Canare L-EAT) <Test conditions>. Flush along power cables for 0 distance. Power cable connected to lighting fixture died to 0% capacity with load of kw.. The noise induced in the audio cable was boosted by 0 db in the head aplifier and viewed on a spectru analyzer. 0 Star quad cable with aluinu foil shield

2 Q & A Q When avoiding use of etal conduit, how far away should icrophone cable be fro power cables? When foregoing the use of protective etal conduit, use the graph shown in Fig. as a general guide for distancing cables. Note that ignoring basic guidelines for positioning cables can easily result in noise induction probles which are very difficult to deal with later. Encasing icrophone cables in etal conduits is highly recoended for applications that utilize the delicate signal range. Lateral distance (c) Q ~9kV 00A and over 00~V A ~00V A 0V 0A V 0A Parallel distance () Fig. Distances for positioning icrophone and power cables <Requisite conditions>. are the star quad type.. Power cables are in the circular cab tire configuration. What considerations are required when using a rack for strong electric current? The sae as for the preceding question when etal conduit is not used. Q6 Would there be any proble with routing the cables through a flexible etal conduit? The flexible conduit would certainly help to reduce noise but would not be as effective as a rigid etal conduit. Use the graph in Fig. as a guide for distancing cables. Lateral distance (c) ~9kV 00A and over 00~V A ~00V A 0V 0A V 0A Parallel distance () Fig. Distances for positioning icrophone and power cables when routing icrophone cables via flexible etal conduit <Requisite conditions>. are the star quad type routed through flexible etal conduit.. Metal conduit is grounded using appropriate level of resistance.. Power cables are in the circular cab tire configuration. AWG is for Indicating conductor size AWG is the abbreviation for Aerican Wire Gauge. For solid center conductor, nubers are decided by conductor. and for stranded center conductor, nubers are decided by conductor cross sectional area. The AWG nubers for conductors used at Canare are listed in Table. Q7 What are the criteria for choosing between the any different types of icrophone cables? As all are designed to provide electroagnetic shielding there is not that uch basic difference in shielding perforance. However, they do differ in various specific characteristics. Cable type should be selected according to specific requireents. (See Fig. ) Fig. s of star quad icrophone cables Braided The braided copper shield is designed to aintain effective shielding perforance, regardless of how any ties the cable is unwound, bent, twisted or rewound. It is ideal for use as handheld icrophone cables or extension cables. This type is ore expensive than other types as it is braided very finely to ensure a highly ipenetrable shield. Cable terination requires seasoned expertise. Spiral The spiral shield consists of several copper wires wound tightly around the cable in a spiral wind. The shielding effect is heightened by winding the shield on twice, each tie fro different directions in what is referred to as the double-spiral shield. The cost range for the spiral shield cable lies roughly id way between the braided shield and the aluinu foil shield cable. Although cable terination operations are coparatively siple, the spiral shield tends to deteriorate when flexed too frequently. It is designed for stationary installation. Aluinu Foil The aluinu foil shield cable consists of aluinu foil fused onto a polyester fil and wound around the cable in the for of a tape. Cable terination involves a siple operation and the cable is relatively inexpensive. The aluinu foil cable is recoended for use as stationary cabling. Aluinu foil cable with a Kevlar cable filler is highly recoended for areas where cables will be routed through etal conduit. The Kevlar filler protects the cable as it passes through the conduit, preventing cable breakage or shorting, even when intense stress is applied to the cable. The aluinu foil cable is currently widely used in function halls and ultipurpose track and field stadius. 3 Star Quad The Star Quad Story Canare Star Quad obtains its nae fro the -conductor style construction that iniizes the loop area between twists of the conductors. This double balanced pairing, reduces susceptibility to electroagnetically induced noise. The iproveent in noise rejection is so noticeable, that even SCR dier noise (stage lighting consoles), is reduced to less than /0 the level found in other -conductor icrophone cables. Canare Star Quad is designed for use with icrophones but is also excellent for all line-level signals (e.g. ixer to power aps). The -conductor Star Quad arrangeent, cancels electroagnetically induced noise fro SCR dier packs, fluorescent lighting ballasts and AC power transforers. Handling noise is prevented by use of cotton filler aterial. Excellent frequency response is aintained due to special irradiated polyethylene insulation which provides a low capacitance dielectric. Canare Star Quad cable with braided shields is super flexible. We use large nubers of thin wire strands in the copper conductors and overall braided shield. We extrude a special copound PVC outer jacket that reains pliant at extreely low teperatures with no wait between cold shipping and installation. Filler Canare selects cotton, jute and /or exotic polyester fibers for packing. These fillers prevent stretching and twisting of the inner conductors which can cause noise. Additionally, paper, Mylar and/or cloth tape, bind conductors so cables hold their shape. Conductors All Canare icrophone cables utilize high-conductivity, annealed copper wires, stranded to for flexible conductors and shields. Jacket Canare uses specially forulated PVC copounds that cobine to ake a tough, strong and durable outer jacket with excellent flexibility. These qualities are retained even at very low teperatures, so Canare cables will not stiffen or crack. Available in 0 attractive colors. Insulation Canare cables utilize special polyer copounds that reduce capacitive R-C filter roll off within the cable and prevent high voltage breakdown. By irradiating the aterial, the polyer becoes extensively cross-linked, cheically inert, water resistant, and reains flexible at very low teperatures. Irradiated PE is superior to ordinary polyethylene because it is heat resistant. Canare insulation will not shrink back, flow or char when soldering, so you save initial and rework tie, and achieve ore reliable connections. Canare does not use spiral (serve) shields because they can spread apart with use. Our shields are ore difficult to anufacture because we use any thin copper strands in a densely woven braid. The shields are super flexible and offer outstanding noise rejection. In order to axiize noise rejection, Star Quad ust be properly wired to the XLR- connector (or terinal block). WHITE BLUE BLUE WHITE SHIELD XLR CONNECTOR Because the shield density on Canare Cable is very high, it is soewhat difficult to push back the braid and pull the inner conductors through. Instead, we strongly recoend unbraiding the shield by cobing it out with a pointed tool, beginning at the end of the cable. STAR QUAD

Four-conductor Configuration Miniizes Noise Speaker cable ust accoodate relatively high signal levels, typically tens to hundreds of watts of RMS power. Electroagnetic interference (EMI) can radiate fro these speaker lines directly into adjacent low voltage cables (i.e. icrophone, video, lines, etc.). Canare solves this proble by using a -conductor Star Quad configuration in all of our S-series speaker cables. Because every conductor is located the sae distance fro center, the opposing agnetic fields are cancelled out. Attenuation of agnetic field radiation is superior when copared to a standard -conductor speaker wire. Selecting the Right Speaker Cable Always try to keep speaker cables as short as possible and select cable odels that offer a higher daping factor; 0-0 for usic (i.e. connect sound) and 0-0 for speech (i.e. sport stadius). The greater the daping factor (DF), the better the ability to control speaker excursion to create sharp, clear quality in the low end frequency range. speaker ipedance daping factor = power ap. output ipedance + cable resist. for total loop As the above forula shows, a higher conductor resistance causes a lower daping factor, which prevents even top quality power aps fro perforing at peak optiu levels. 19 Technical Note Technical Note Many types of video coax. What re the differences and how select? In brief, there are three of essential factors: ) center conductor, ) insulation, and ) shield. Each factor has its advantage and disadvantage as described below: ) Center Conductor: two types existing, Solid and Stranded. Stranded conductor is ore flexible and therefore the best choice for obile and stage use. ) Insulation: includes Solid, Foaed, and Highly-foaed types. Foaed and highly-foaed insulation would perfor better attenuation, copared to the solid type thus they are often selected for hi-def video. However, since foaed and high-foaed insulation contain the air physically, they are weak to external pressure. You should pay attention to where and how the cables are installed. ) : we have Braided and Braided with aluinu foil type. Braided shields include single, double, or triple layers as well as bare copper or tinned copper. Braided with aluinu foil offers perfect screening, but they are not suitable for repeated bending and obile applications due to the foil s lack of strength. In that case, it s better to choose Braided. Braided Double-Layer Braided Braided with Aluinu Foil What is Propagation Delay? Propagation delay refers to the tie required for a signal to be transitted fro one end of connection to another. In the case of cable transission, this greatly depends on the aterials and construction of the actual cable, and large differences in delay can cause transission errors if they exceed the receiver delay tolerance. The following table shows the differences in coaxial cable propagation delay tie relative to the insulation type. Propagation Delay Caused by Coaxial Cable Insulation (reference) Insulation Propagation Delay Solid PE.0 ns/ Foaed PE. ns/ Highly-Foaed PE.7 ns/ Typical Transission Distance as per SMPTE Standard SMPTE ST 9 ST ST 9 ST ST 0- Designation SD-SDI 0 Mbps-SDI HD-SDI G-SDI G-SDI Video Forat NTSC PAL /6 (:) /6 (6:9) /6 (:) p60 K 00i K 00p K UHD Bit Rate Mb/s 77 Mb/s 70 Mb/s 60 Mb/s 0 Mb/s.
