1 Questel Orbit Fact Sheet DWPIMC Derwent Manual Code Classifications Contents: The DWPIMC database contains Derwents unique classification system consistently applied to all patents by Derwent subject experts, enabling effective and precise searching in a particular area of technology. Patents are divided into three broad areas: Chemical, Engineering, and Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Each of these is then further divided into Sections and Classes which describe the technical area, or areas, covered by the patent. Sections : Patents are divided into 21 broad subject areas or Sections. These are designated : A-M (Chemical); P-Q (Engineering); and S-X (Electronic and Electrical). Classes : These Sections are then further subdivided into classes. Each Class consists of the Section letter, followed by two digits. 3 Searching Basic Index (default index) Search by Index Search Hints Examples Terms from the Basic Index /BI The Basic Index contains DEF field (codes and definitions for all levels of hierarchy), the TI field (last line of field DEF) and the KW field (key words). It is possible to search without qualifying to the index. The basic index may be searched using keywords, Boolean, truncation and implied proximity. Left hand truncation is available. 5 Other Indexes: Search by Index Search Hints Examples Notes /NO This field provides the list of the technologies likely to be included or excluded from the code, as well as references towards other possible codes. /NO=YES Search for the presence of the field. Description (Keywords) /KW This field is available only for part of EPI Manual Codes. The field consists of the terms most frequently used in the title of the patents within a classification. /KW STORAGE Search using keywords, Boolean, truncation and implied proximity. /KW MOVING COIL When using MEMS, use /KWT.
