1 ISOLATOR UNIT SPECIFICATION Isolator Unit INTRODUCTION The Isolator Unit (AC00) for MPLAB REAL ICE In-Circuit Emulator, also known as an opto-isolator, is a useful accessory to the MPLAB REAL ICE in-circuit emulator system. The isolator enables connectivity for AC line and high voltage applications not referenced to ground. Typically, these are consumer applications such as light dimmers, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and other types of motor-based systems where the MCU uses a non-isolated power supply. DANGER Potential Electrical Hazard. Do not remove the board enclosure. Depending on your application, you could be exposing yourself to dangerous voltage levels. DEVICE SUPPORT HARDWARE SETUP Because of the complexity and high dynamic voltage range, the isolator currently provides MCU technology support for only those devices listed below: PICFXXX devices (-bit) Only supported in Low-Voltage Programming (LVP) mode PICFXXJ devices (-bit) dspic and PIC devices (-bit) PIC devices (-bit) To use this unit:. Obtain a Performance Pak (AC00). This unit can be used only with the Performance Pak.. Use this unit instead of the high-speed receiver board. See the Performance Pak for the MPLAB REAL ICE In-Circuit Emulator User s Guide (DS000) for pinouts. The isolator connects on one end to the Performance Pak high-speed cables. The other end of the isolator connects to the target using an -pin, single-line In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP ) connector. See Figure -. 0 Microchip Technology Inc. DS0009A-page

Select your project in the Projects window and right click to view the context menu. Select Properties.. In the Project Properties window, select the REAL ICE category, and then select the Program Options option category.. Check Enable Low Voltage Programming. For more information on other program options, see the MPLAB REAL ICE In-Circuit Emulator User s Guide (DS0000) Emulator Function Summary chapter, Program Options section.. Click Apply or OK. When using the isolator, trace is not supported. The isolator is a bridge where electrically hot signals are passed through transparently to the emulator. The ICSP interface signals are magnetically or optically isolated, providing up to. kv equivalent isolation protection. The isolator is housed in its own enclosure providing an additional measure of safety. This unit contains the same circuitry as the high-speed receiver board.
