2 2 Task Force IEEE PES/PSDP/PSSC Task Force on Oscillation Source Location was created in The main objective: Facilitate the development of practically useful methods and tools for locating the source of sustained oscillations in power systems This presentation reports the following effort: Creation of a Test Cases Library of simulated and actual oscillatory events
3 3 Test Case Library* The initial test case library of simulated cases was created in 2016**. Developed cases cover oscillatory events possible in actual power systems: Forced and natural oscillations; resonance conditions; multiple sources; forced signal in the excitation system of generators 179-bus, 29-machine WECC system 9 cases of poorly damped natural oscillations 14 cases of forced oscillations New developments Added 4 simulated test cases with a forced signal in the governor of a generator Established the procedure for collection of PMU data sets capturing real-life events of sustained oscillations including poorly damped natural and forced oscillations * ** S. 4 4 Added Simulated Cases Added four simulated cases of forced oscillations caused by a periodic signal in the governor of a generator. 179-bus WECC system Case # Type of injected signal Frequency of first harmonic/hz Source location Description FM_1 Sinusoidal Resonance with local 0.86Hz mode FM_3 Sinusoidal Resonance with inter-area 0.37Hz mode FM_6_2 Periodic, rectangular Spectra of forced harmonics consist of 0.2Hz, 0.6Hz, 1Hz, 1.4Hz, etc modes FM_7_1 Sinusoidal Two sources of forced signals creating resonance with two different modes, respectively
5 5 Procedure of Collecting PMU data* The requirements and format for PMU data submission: SustainedOscillations_Requirements_PMUdata_ docx Proposed IEEE.csv format for PMU data submission Similar to NERC SMS.csv and WECC/JSIS.csv formats No calculated data, only raw PMU measurements Matlab code for analysis of PMU data provided in IEEE.csv format: Read_AnalysisPMU_IEEEformat_v1.m Compliance of PMU data with the requirements Statistics of PMU signals (types, number of signals, usability for estimation of MW and MVAR) Sanity check of values Plotting graphs of all signals Calculation of frequency spectra from F, V and I signals *

Anyone is welcome to use the available test cases for development of Oscillation source locating method/tool Any other PMU-based research and development For example, ISO-NE cases include transmission lines having PMU measurements from both terminal buses, which can be used for line parameter estimation Electrical utilities are encouraged to provide more cases of actual oscillatory events Larger set of representative test cases benefits the development of efficient practical tools for locating the source of sustained oscillations
