2 General The monitoring of the earth s athmosphere is one of the most important tasks, especially at present, where the climate change causes worldwide problems by extreme weather phenomina. High quality equipment is necessary for the exact and continous measurement of the meteorological parameters, for the transport of the measured data to network centers and for the instant.visualisation of the data to meteorologists and the public. s do offer these possibilities, are compact and robust, and especially designed for the use at remote locations and in harsh environments. Due to its modular design the stations have unsurpassed flexibility regarding types and numbers of sensors and communication. The station is controlled by the advanced station manager Gealog SG which enables beside the measuring task full monitoring of the station parameters and the quality of the recorded data by adding essential quality information to the recorded data. Because of the special hardware design the stations can be operated not only by mains power but also by solar power or batteries only. Additional features: Easy to use The station manager Gealog SG is delivered with an alphanumerical LCD display or with graphical display which provides a perfect, easy to operate menu driven user interface. Together with the integrated membrane keyboard and the interface for USB Memory Sticks the station can be operated locally without any additional equipment like notebook PCs or special operating units. Hydrological applications Due to the flexible design one and the same station can be used not only to connect meteorological sensors. The various types of hardware and software interfaces allow also the connection of water level sensors, water quality multiparameter probes, ultrasonic Doppler discharge measuring devices, etc. Pic. 2: Spring Monitoring Station, Austria Perfect overvoltage protection A special feature of Gealog Weather Stations is the high-grade overvoltage protection. Each and every wire going in and out is protected by specially designed modular overvoltage protection module. This feature allows the installation also at locations with a high lightning propability. Remote sensor station The whole station design is based on the concept, that the sensors are connected by so called Page 2 of 17

3 Gealog Measuring Interfaces to a serial bus, called Gealog RS485 Fieldbus. This design allows to connect remote sensor stations, which are mounted up to approximately 1000 m from the central station enclosure very easily. Special short distance radio modules can be used for connecting sensors wireless. Complete station design Logotronic offers all parts necessary for complete stations including not only measuring equipment and sensors, but also station infrastructure like different types of radiation shields, meteorological masts and pedestals, communication equipment together with consulting regarding the specific application. Field proven technology Gealog Weather stations are used by many customers worldwide, also by various National Meteorological Services. The use in countrywide measuring networks shows the confidence of our customers in our products. 4 1. Station Manager Gealog SG and Gealog Measuring Interfaces Pic. 3: Gealog SG with Graphical Display Gealog SG is one of the most advanced dataloggers actually on the market. Beside many standard functionalities and extensive calculation and data logging capabilities it has some special features: Graphical data output High data memory capacity Manual readout of stored data using USB Memory Stick Maximum connectivity: PSTN-Telephone, TCP/IP, GSM, GPRS, Radio, Satellite Integrated Web-server Unmatched number of interfacing possibilities: - 2 x Gealog RS485-Fieldbus - SDI-12-3 x serial interfaces RS232 - USB interfaces Master and Slave - Ethernet interface Logotronic s Integrated Quality Control (IQC) functions. Each stored measuring value is accompanied by a quality status information. The Gealog SG is based on a highly sophisticated new electronic processor board, developed by Logotronic especially for the application at remote measuring stations. The board is running LINUX operating system to give maximum flexibility and adaptibility for the implementation of future requirements. Page 4 of 17

Different types of sensors are connected via specific Gealog Measuring Interfaces to the Fieldbus. Adding of new sensors or changes are quite easily to manage. The number of measuring channels of the station is nearly unlimited. Each Gealog Measuring Interface contains microcontrollers for local preprocessing of the sensor data like averaging, sensor status monitoring, computation of extreme values, etc. Therefore the Gealog SG station manager doesn t need any high speed processing and can manage any number of sensors independent on the specific sensor measuring program. Power supply mostly depends on the sensors and sensor heating. The minimum system without sensor heating can be operated even with a pack of Alcaline batteries for more than one year. Power supply options: Battery pack (Alcaline) For simple configurations like air temperature, humidity and precipitation. Power supply by rechargeable batteries (Lead batteries) Exchanging of batteries after some weeks to months. Solar power supply Solar panels ranging from 10 Watts to 80 Watts with buffer battery for uninterrupted operation also with complex sensor configurations and remote data transfer. Page 6 of 17

7 Pic. 7: Station with Solar Power Supply Mains power supply Standard solution for all configurations with sensor heating. High effective overvoltage protection on the power lines is provided by a special mains connection unit. As standard a buffer batterie is provided to bridge failures in the mains power supply. 3. Communication Unit A very strong feature of the is the flexibility in communication. Modems are connected via serial interfaces RS232. Since Gealog SG has three independent serial interfaces redundant data transfer paths can be installed and work in parallel. I.e. GPRS and as backup satellite communication. Communication options: Manual readout of the recorded data or download of new parameters can be done in an easy way by using standard USB Memory Sticks. TCP/IP By use of Gealog SG s Ethernet interface the station can be directly connected to a LAN network without any additional equipment. Page 7 of 17

8 PSTN - Data transfer via telephone landlines. The used PSTN-modem was specially designed for very demanding applications. GSM communication - Gealog GSM/GPRS Modem GSM data transfer allows also to use SMSs for readout of the actual measured values as well as to receive SMS-alarms on a mobile phone. GPRS - Gealog GSM/GPRS modem GPRS means Internet functionality at station level. The station transfers data automatically to a FTP server (Push operation) or the station can be accessed by Internet using Gealog SG s integrated Web-server. The data is normally transferred to the FTP server using the standard Internet XML-protocol. Also other formats were implemented on customers request. 9 4. Enclosure There are different standard enclosures available. Depending on the specific application the best one has to be be selected. Enclosure options: Standard enclosures in the dimensions W x H x D = 600 mm x 600 mm x 210 mm or 380 mm x 600 mm x 210 mm, sheet metal, powder coated. Enclosures with the same dimensions in stainless steel for application in very humid environments. For remote sensor stations also smaller boxes can be used in the dimensions 380 mm x 380 mm x 210 mm. If bigger station batteries with capacities > 27 Ah are required we recommend to use a separated box for the station battery because also sealed batteries have a certain amount of gassing during charging. The agressive gases can damage the electronic components inside the enclosure if the battery is inside the station enclosure. All enclosurs have a protection mode of IP66 (NEMA 4X) which makes it perfectly suited for permanent operation in the field. The doors have a temper proof lock. It is possible to integrated an enclosure heater and a door open contact. The enclosures can be wall-mounted or mounted on the meteorological mast. In the standard version the cables are led through cable glands and are connected inside the enclosure to terminals. Optional round pin connectors can be foreseen for the sensor cables. Solar protection shields can be installed optionally on the enclosures for protecting the internal electronic components against too high temperatures. Pic. 9: Typical enclosure layout Page 9 of 17

Sensors The sensors can be connected to the station in different ways: Gealog Measuring Interfaces There are many types of Gealog Measuring Interfaces available, especially designed to convert the specific sensor s interface into Gealog RS485 Fieldbus format. SDI-12 Many sensors have the standardized serial SDI-12 interface. These sensors don t need a Gealog Measuring Interface and can be connected directly to Gealog SG s SDI-12 interface. For most of the offered standard sensors the s are available on Depending on the type of the sensor the Gealog Measuring Interface is not only measuring the meteorological parameters but also as many additional information as possible to estimate the quality of the measuring. 14 6. Station infrastructure - meteorological Mast and Pedestals, Accessories Logotronic offers a wide range of necessary equipment for the "station infrastructure". These components were especially designed to fulfill the needs of professional meteorological services and are in operational use by national meteorological services. Software Components There are different software modules available for Gealog Automatic Stations: For the definition of the station parameters like arrangement of measuring channels. data transfer parameters, sampling and storage rates, mathematical/statistical processings, quality control parameters, etc. the software module "ParamEdit" is available.
