1 Cell Phone Applications and Wireless Communication Horizons- Upward Bound HUB Cranbrook The mission of Horizons-Upward Bound is to prepare students with limited opportunity from the Detroit metropolitan area to enter and succeed in post-secondary education.

3 Our Mission A group of students will meet through the winter phase going through lessons on Cell Phones and Wireless Communications. Consisting of the following lessons: 24 Saturdays Sept May 2011 Activity 1 Student Research Project Activity 2 Learning Outcomes & Goals Activity 3 Analyzing Your Voices Challenge 1 A simple telephone System Activity 4 Voice over Light Beams Activity 5 Music over Light Beams Activity 6 Radio Wave Patterns Challenge 2 Home-Made Radio Transmitter and Receiver Activity 7 Investigating Radio Waves Activity 8 Building and Testing Resonance Devices Activity 9 Modeling AM and FM Signals Challenge 3 Investigations with the walkie-talkies Activity 10 Maximum Distance for a Cell Tower Transmission Activity 11 Hearing Analog and Digital Signals Activity 12 Seeing the Light Signals Challenge 4 Make a Bar Code Scanner Activity 13- Converting an Analog to a Digital Signal Challenge 5 -The A-D Challenge Activity 14 Transmitting Binary Codes and Recreating Analog Signals Activity 15 Modeling TDMA for Optical Fibers Activity 16 Modeling Cell Connections and Handoffs Challenge 5- Coding and De-coding a Binary Signal Once this has been achieved the students will become groups of 4 5 and develop an application for cell phones. They will program it, develop it as a product and determine how, where and when their app. can be sold to the public and at what cost. This will be done during the 6 week summer session 2011
4 Project Goals & Objectives Team members gain an understanding of all the technology that goes into a cell phone. Team members gain an understanding that all wireless technology does not work the same, that there are different areas of the electromagnetic spectrum that allow each to operate. Team members learn the technology of Radio waves and how transmitters receivers, relay stations and wireless communication works for each area of entity involved. Team members learn that wireless communication is really done through waves ranging from light, infrared, microwave, AM, FM, Television and thousands of other applications Team members will design a cell phone application that can be used. Team members will program the application and determine its worthiness and engineer new ideas into the application. Team members will determine a business plan for their application. Team members will develop a marketing plan and production plan for their application and how they can sell it over the internet or in other markets.
5 Accomplishments to date 1. Team members have been able to create a simple telephone system. 2. They have been able to convert their voices and music to electrical signals to light signals to electrical signals and back into sound waves 3. Team members have been able to create and analyze radio waves through computer simulations. 4. Team members have created home-made radios in which they broadcast their own voices as well as music. 5. Team members have looked at how AM & FM radios waves are emitted and have been able to compare and contrast them 6. Team members are presently working on research projects to be presented in April.
6 Road blocks for Success 1. Since we meet only three Saturdays a month for 1 hour our time is very limited. 2. Team members do not all have the same home school and therefore share time only on those Saturdays. 3. Many team members are involved in programs at their home schools which causes them to miss a Saturday. 4. The program requires us to miss some Saturdays because of fund raising, exhibitions and guest speakers. 5. Overall, we have done well achieving 10 lessons in 12 sessions remaining lessons to go with 11 remaining Saturdays.
7 The Future Winter Phase Continue with course goals and objectives through the remaining Saturdays of the program. The Sessions are: Feb. 5, 12 Mar. 5,12,19 Apr. 2,9,30 May 7,14,21 Students Research Projects are due March 5 in power point form for the EXPO Summer Phase I have already found a mentor for the students that will be working with them through the six week program. The Director of HUB has assured me they will be with me daily Presently we are determining software to be used in Summer.
8 Marketing Presently we are looking to get a grant or funds from OnStar or possibly Motorola in order to help fund this in the summer and into the future. We as a school are also looking to investors to help bring some applications to the market and raise funds for HUB and our wireless program.
