2 WHAT IS HUB? We are an Upward Bound program began in 1965 at Cranbrook Schools. We have a student body of just under 200 from schools in Detroit, Pontiac & Berkley. The mission of Horizons-Upward Bound is to prepare students with limited opportunity from the Detroit metropolitan area to enter and succeed in post-secondary secondary education. Our students have a 98% admitted to post secondary institutions rate and a 75% post-secondary secondary graduation rate. We are 86.4% African American, 7.6% Caucasian,,2.3% hispanic and 3.7% Asian American. Cranbrook s HUB program is the largsest HUB program in the United States. HUB students come from low income families and are first generation college students. HUB is the most successful program of its kind in America today, with an alumni population of over 2500 in the past 45 years.
3 THE GOALS & OBJECTIVES OF HUB APPS WERE: Team members gain an understanding of all the technology that goes into a cell phone. Team members gain an understanding that all wireless technology does not work the same, that there are different areas of the electromagnetic spectrum that allow each to operate. Team members learn the technology of Radio waves and how transmitters receivers, relay stations and wireless communication works for each area of entity involved. Team members learn that wireless communication is really done through waves ranging from light, infrared, microwave, AM, FM, Television and thousands of other applications Team members will design a cell phone application that can be used. Team members will program the application and determine its worthiness and engineer new ideas into the application. Team members will determine a business plan for their application. Team members will develop a marketing plan and production plan for their application and how they can sell it over the internet or in other markets.
4 SO LETS SEE WHAT WE LEARNED!! First we will make a simple connection of a speaker to an amplifier. In this connection our sound waves are turned into electrical waves which are then turned back into sound waves. If we repeat the process with another student. We can create a simple telephone system in which each student shares the others amplifier and speaks to one another.
5 CONVERTING SOUND WAVES TO LIGHT? Now that we can convert sound waves to electrical waves, we will convert the electrical waves to light. By using our speaker we convert sound waves to electricity and the amplifier is hooked up to a LED (Light emitting diode) and we can get light.
6 WHAT CAN WE DO WITH THE LIGHT? With our voices converted to light energy what good is it? If we put a Solar cell by the LED and have that attached to an amplifier. So now we ve converted our sound wave into electricity into light and the light is converted back into electricity and back into sound waves.
7 WHAT S NEXT? Now if we attach a fiber optic cable from the LED to the solar panel. Our sound waves are converted to electricity which is converted to light which is carried through the fiber optic cable to the solar panel converting the light back into electricity and the electricity is then converted back into sound waves. These are the essential elements of cell phones and wireless communication the next thing we must add is a receiver and a transmitter.
8 LIGHT IS PART OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM Light is a small area of the electromagnetic spectrum, so if instead of converting our sound waves to light we converted them to a different part of the spectrum, such as microwaves or radio waves.
9 MICROWAVE VERSUS RADIO WAVE What would happen if you talked to somebody at the same time on a cell phone and a walkietalkie? Walkie-talkies use radio waves and cell phones use microwaves. Which is faster? In science we learned that both move at the same speed, that of light, 300,000km/s.
10 OUR LAST EXPERIMENT: HOW DO BAR CODES WORK? We know from before that light moves at 300,00km/s so do all electromagnetic waves. So if we put a laser on a solar panel we get a hum. If we aim a infrared remote at a solar panel we get a different result. Now if we aim our laser and put a comb through the laser it is just like a bar code with light and no light. This is converted to binary computer numbers which tell the computer all about the product you are buying. Now lets make some music.
11 HOW I M SPENDING MY SUMMER VACATION This summer the HUB APPS will complete their adventure into wireless technology by programming our own application for cell phones. Cellular phone application development is very much platformdependent. Not only do you have to design and implement your apps according to a specific framework, say BREW or Symbian, but you also need to target at a specific brand and model. That is why you can't find a general guide to mobile phone application development. We will be programming our apps on the Droid platform and Java as our language.
