Customer problem based idea generation UnternehmerTUM
What are customer problems? UnternehmerTUM Kick-off 10
How to start? When you re talking about an idea, you actually talk first about a customer problem:» brainstorm,» exchange,» detect and» understand. and secondly about an idea for the solution:» reasonable,» appropriate and» effective. UnternehmerTUM Kick-off 11
Technology based idea generation UnternehmerTUM
Improved human-machine networking How can you make your coffee machine talk to your toaster and why should it? What is the role of humans in this system? UnternehmerTUM Kick-off 13
Distributed data creation and processing How can many distributed ants be enabled to build pyramids and how is this managed efficiently? UnternehmerTUM Kick-off 14
Individualized products and distributed production How can anyone create new products and produce them locally? How is this done sustainably and efficiently? UnternehmerTUM Kick-off 15
Effectuation based idea generation UnternehmerTUM
Logics and Their Uses Causal logic Effectual logic To the extent we can predict the future, we can control it. To the extent we can work with things within our control, we don t need to predict the future Useful when: The future is uncertain, but knowable Goals are clear, but ways to achieve them are not so Useful when: The future is not only uncertain, but also unknowable Goals are ambiguous, but means are clear and limited Slide adapted from Sarasvathy, 2010; Source: Prof. Hana Milanov, 2013 UnternehmerTUM Kick-off 17

Effectuation principles Bird-in-Hand (Means) Principle When Effectuation Entrepreneurs set out to build a new venture, they start with their means: who I am, what I know, and whom I know. Then, the entrepreneurs imagine possibilities that originate from their means. Affordable Loss Principle Effectuation Entrepreneurs limit risk by understanding what they can afford to lose at each step, instead of seeking large all-or-nothing opportunities. They choose goals and actions where there is upside even if the downside ends up happening. Crazy Quilt (Partnerships) Principle Effectuation Entrepreneurs build partnerships with self-selecting stakeholders. By obtaining pre-commitments from these key partners early on in the venture, experts reduce uncertainty and co-create the new market with its interested participants. Lemonade (Leverage Contingencies) Principle Effectuation entrepreneurs invite the surprise factor. Instead of making what-if scenarios to deal with worst-case scenarios, experts interpret bad news and surprises as potential clues to create new markets. Pilot-in-the-Plane (Control vs. Predict) Principle By focusing on activities within their control, effectuation entrepreneurs know their actions will result in the desired outcomes. An effectual worldview is rooted in the belief that the future is neither found nor predicted, but rather made. Principles adapted from effectuation.org, 2013 UnternehmerTUM Kick-off 20
Summary Effectuation Cycle UnternehmerTUM Kick-off 21
Inventory of your Means WHO AM I? WHAT DO I KNOW? WHOM DO I KNOW? Tastes, values, preferences Prior knowledge, education Networks (Linkedin, Xing, Facebook) Passions Knowledge from jobs Classmates, professors Hobbies Knowledge from life Family, friends Interests Learning from hobbies Unforseen encounters UnternehmerTUM Kick-off 22
