2 Philippe Grollier Bonfires 36, 73, 75, 93, 172, 201. Each Bonfires has numbers as legends and tells the story of a land with multiple names. These Bonfires made out of wood palettes and tires, can measure up to thirty meters in height. They are built in the protestant districts of Northern Ireland, to then be destroyed under the eyes of the Catholic. Philippe Grollier pursues them, numbers them, catalogues them, photographs them using a large format camera and places them repeatedly in the centre of the image. These monument al and fragile constructions commemorate the memory of the victory of the protestant William III d Orange on the 12 th of July 1690 against James II of England, the last catholique king of Ireland. Symbols of hatred are still perennial between unionists and republicans. When the Irish flag blows at the top, it is in waiting to see it burn. The Bonfires will not catch fire under the gaze of the photographer. He choses to not show this moment, as hope of not seeing them go up in flames again. For the last ten years, Philippe Grollier waits for the 11 th of July to capture on the fly the completed constructions. Philippe Grollier knows Northern Ireland well and the troubles of its history. He photographs the walls that separate the cities into protestant and catholique zones, and the faces of the generation born with the progress of peace. He is the French friend with a Northern Ireland accent who photographs the Peacewalls and Bonfires, and who settles himself in Bogside, the catholic district of Bloody Sunday in Derry. The austere beauty of the Bonfires echoes the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, and finds its place in the heritage of the Düsseldorf School. The frontal gaze of the photographs and shooting in a series fade at the turn of a shaded sky, a barrier, a house, and tell stories from Northern Ireland, the Republic, Ulster, de six provinces and Erin.
