5 Important information 1 Documentation These Installation and Operating Instructions form an integral part of the appliance. They conform to the relevant version of the equipment and the technical standards valid at the time of installation. DÜRR NDT cannot be held liable and cannot offer guarantees for safe and smooth operation of this appliance in the case that notes and instructions contained in these Installation and Operating Instructions are not observed. This translation of the Installation and Operating Instructions has been carried out in good faith. The German version of the installation and operating instructions is relevant. DÜRR NDT does not accept any liability in the case of incorrect translation. 1.1 Warnings and symbols Warnings The warnings in this document are there to point out possible injury to persons or damage to machinery. However, a small degree of risk is always present. Please observe the following notes. 2.1 Correct use The appliance is intended exclusively for the scanning and processing of image data on an image plate under industrial conditions. 1.2 Notes on copyright All circuits, processes, names, software programs and appliances quoted are protected under industrial property rights. Printing or copying of these Installation and Operating Instructions, even excerpts thereof, may only be carried out with the written approval of DÜRR NDT. 2.2 Incorrect use Any use of this appliance above and beyond that specifically described in these instructions will be deemed to be as not according to the intended use. The manufacturer cannot be held liable for any damage resulting from incorrect usage. The user bears all risks. WARNING Risk of explosion due to inflammation of combustible materials Do not use the appliance in rooms in which combustible mixtures may be present, e.g. in operating theatres. This appliance is not designed for applications in the fields of human medicine or veterinary medicine. The preview of the x-ray as seen on the touch screen is not suitable for diagnostic purposes. 2.3 General safety notes Before using the appliance observe any and all guidelines, laws, regulations and other restrictions which may apply to the appliance. Before each use check the function and condition of the appliance. Do not convert or change the appliance in any way. Observe the Installation and Operating Instructions precisely. Keep the Installation and Operating Instructions in an accessible place so that the operator has instant access to them / V002

7 2.4 Qualified personnel Instructions for use Persons who operate the appliance must, on the basis of their training and knowledge, ensure safe and correct handling of the appliance. Ensure personnel are trained in the correct usage of the appliance. Installation and repair All installation, resetting, alteration, expansion and repair must be carried out either by DÜRR NDT personnel or by a suitably qualified person approved by DÜRR NDT. 2.5 Protection against electrical current Observe all electrical safety regulations when working on the device. Replace any damaged lines and plug and socket outlets immediately. 2.6 Only use original parts Only parts specified by DÜRR NDT or specifically approved accessories and special accessories may be used with this appliance. Only use original working parts and spare parts. Result: DÜRR NDT accepts no liability for damage or injury resulting where accessories or special accessories or where non-original parts or spare parts not specifically approved have been used. 2.7 Transport Important information Only the original packing ensures optimum protection for the appliance during transport. Where required original unit packing for this unit can be ordered from DÜRR NDT. DÜRR NDT cannot be held responsible for any damage to the unit resulting from transport in unsuitable packaging; this is also valid during the period of guarantee. Only transport the unit in its original packing. Keep all packaging away from children. Do not expose the appliance to any strong shocks. 2.8 Disposal Appliance Dispose of the unit correctly. Within the European Union dispose of the unit according to EU-directive 2002/96/EG (WEEE). If you have any questions concerning disposal of the product, please contact DÜRR NDT or your specialist dental supplier. Image plate The image plate contains barium compounds. Dispose of the image plate properly in accordance with the locally applicable regulations. 13 4.3 Model identification plate The model identification plate is located on the rear side of the base foot. 4.4 Note on Conformity Product description This appliance has been tested according to the relevant directive of the European Union and the required conformity acceptance procedure. This appliance meets all the necessary requirements. ETL approval This Class A digital apparatus complies with Canadian ICES-003. 14 Product description 5 Function 5.1 Image plate scanner If the scanning order is started via the imaging software, the image is automatically transmitted to the computer. If the scanning order is started via the touch screen, the image is stored on the memory card and must be transmitted to the computer later. After scanning, the image plate runs through the erasure unit. Image data still held on the image plate will be erased by intense light. The image plate is then output to be used again. The unit is capable of scanning up to four image plates (depending on the sizes) simultaneously at the same resoution. Operating panels Touch screen 2 On/Off switch The touch screen allows the appliance to be operated even when not connected to a PC. Instructions can be entered on the touch screen either with the tip of a finger or the stylus. 1 Stylus Insertion slots 4 Operating panels Insertion slots 7 Memory card slot Image files stored on an image plate are read using an image plate scanner. The appliance can be operated in two ways: Via the imaging software on a computer, or directly via the touch screen on the appliance. The transport mechanism guides the image plate through the appliance. In the scanner unit a laser scans the image plate. The sampled data is converted into a digital image. 15 Connections The connections are on the rear side of the appliance. 5.2 Image plate Product description The image plate stores x-ray energy, which is re-emitted when stimulated by the laser in the form of light. This light is then transformed into image information in the image plate scanner. The image plate has both an active and an inactive side. The image plate must always be exposed to the active side. When used properly, image plates can be exposed, read and erased several hundred times provided there is no mechanical damage. The image plate must be replaced if there are any signs of damage, e.g. protective layer is damaged or visible scratches, which could interfere with diagnosis Reset switch 2 Connection for power unit 3 AUX-connection for diagnostic unit 4 Network connection with status LED Exposure recognition When the exposure recognition is switched on, then the unit will detect whether an image plate is exposed or not on insertion. When an exposed image plate is scanned then an x-ray image will be displayed. When an unexposed image plate is scanned then an empty image plate will be displayed. A preview will not be displayed on the touchscreen. When the exposure recognition is switched off and an unexposed image plate is scanned then the unit will not display anything on the touchscreen or in the software. 1 inactive side black, with manufacturer's information 2 active side white / V002 13

16 Product description 5.3 Flexible image plate cassette 5.5 Rigid cassette The flexible image plate cassette has several protection features for image plates: Protection against sunlight and UV light, thereby adding protection against premature erasure Protection against mechanical damage The flexible image plate cassette can be used in non-dirty environments. The rigid cassette can be inserted into conventional x-ray unit trays. Additionally rigid cassettes offer protection against damage. 5.6 Stylus pen for touch screen The stylus can be used with the touch screen as an alternative to using one's finger tips. 5.7 Light protection cover 5.4 Foil sleeve The foil sleeve provides several protection functions for the image plate: Protection against sunlight and UV light, thereby adding protection against premature erasure Protection against mechanical damage Protection against contamination and dirt The foil sleeves can be used in wet and dirty environments. The light protection plate reduces the amount of stray light that can enter the unit Additionally the light protection plate hinders the image plate from falling out after scanning is completed / V002

17 Mounting Only qualified specialists or persons trained by DÜRR NDT may install, connect and commission the appliance. 6 Prerequisites 6.1 Area of installation The installation room must fulfil the following requirements: Closed, dry, well-ventilated room No purpose-built room (e. g. boiler room or wet room) Max. illuminance 1000 Lux, no direct sunlight where the appliance is installed No large interference fields (e. g. strong magnetic fields) present which can interfere with the functioning of the appliance. Corresponding ambient conditions"4 Technical data". 6.2 System requirements System requirements for computer systems, see information sheet (Order No ) or on the Internet at Monitor The monitor must comply with the requirements for digital X-ray with higher light intensity and high contrast range (according to 25580). Strong ambient light, direct sunlight and reflections can reduce the diagnostic usefulness of the x-rays. 7 Installation 7.1 Carrying the appliance NOTICE Damage to sensitive appliance components from shocks Do not expose the appliance to any strong shocks. Do not move the appliance during operation. When carrying only lift the unit by the side of its housing. Do not hold the unit by its tube / V002 15

18 Mounting 7.2 Setting up the appliance Portable and mobile HF communication appliances can interfere with the effectiveness of electrical appliances. Do not stack the appliance next to or together with other appliances. If the appliance is to be used stacked next to or used together with other appliances, monitor the appliance in this configuration to ensure normal operation. The unit can be set up on a table. The load-bearing capacity of the table must be suitable for the weight of the appliance (see "4.1 Image plate scanner"). Place the appliance on a table To prevent errors when scanning the image data, install the appliance so it is not exposed to vibrations. Place the appliance on a firm, horizontal surface. 7.4 Applying stylus The stylus is held on the unit by a magnet. Place the stylus in the recess provided. 7.5 Insert memory card NOTICE Loss of image data due to unexpected insertion or extraction of the memory card Only insert or extract the memory card when unit is switched off. 19 7.6 Electrical connection Safety for the electrical connection The appliance may only be connected to a correctly installed socket outlet. Make sure the connection lines to the appliance are not subject to any mechanical tension. Before initial start-up, check the supply voltage with the voltage information on the model identification plate (see also "4. Technical Data"). Connecting the appliance to the power supply The unit has no main power switch. For this reason the unit must be set up so that the socket-outlet must be easily accessible and the unit can be unplugged if necessary. Requirements: 99 Correctly installed socket-outlet in the vicinity of the unit (max. length of electric cable 3 m) 99 The socket-outlet must be easily accessible 99 Rated current to conform with the information on the model identification plate on the power unit Connect the mains cable supplied to the appliance power unit. The connection cable has a catch system. To undo the unit, slide the housing of the connector towards the back. Do not apply pulling force to the cable. Connect the power unit to the connection socket on the unit. Mounting 7.7 Connecting the appliance to a network The unit can be connected via network cable or WLAN to a network. For information on connecting via WLAN see "8.1 Installing and configuring the appliance". Safe connection of appliance If appliances are connected with one another or with parts of systems, danger can occur (e.g. due to leakage current). Only connect appliances if there is no danger for operators and the environment. Only connect appliances if the environment is not affected by the coupling. If there is any element of doubt concerning the safety of connected equipment, the safety must be checked and approved by a suitably qualified person (e.g. manufacturer). Only connect additional appliances (e.g. computer, monitor, printer) which at least comply with the IEC ( ) standard. Connecting up the appliance with network cable Connect the network cable provided into the unit's network port. Now connect the power cable to the socket-outlet / V002 17

20 Mounting 8 Operation NOTICE Short circuit due to build up of condensation The appliance can only be put into operation once it has warmed up to room temperature and it is dry. 8.1 Installing and configuring the appliance The unit supports the following imaging programs: EODTec Setting up the network Switch on the network appliances (router, PC, and switch). Check that TCP port 2006 and UDP port 514 are released in the firewall that is used; if not, release them. If you are using the Windows firewall, it is not necessary to check the ports since you are asked if you want to release them during the driver installation process. On connecting to a computer for the first time the unit adapts to the language and the time currently on the computer. Configuring the appliance Configuration is carried out using CRNetConfig, which is automatically installed on installation of EODTec. Select Start > All Programs > Dürr NDT > CRScan > CRNetConfig. Click on once. The list of units connected will be brought up to date. The unit connected can be activated in columnregistered. Several units can be registered. You can change the appliance (name), manually enter an IP address and query information in the CRNet appliance configuration window. Click on. Entering a permanent IP address (recommended) To reset the network settings, keep the unit reset key pressed for seconds while switching on. Deactivate DHCP. Enter the IP address, subnet mask and gateway. Click on Accept. The configuration is saved / V002

21 Connecting unit to WLAN If the unit is to be operated via WLAN, the connection to the unit must be configured. To provide a secure WLAN-connection it is recommended that the WLAN-network is encoded using WPA2. The quality and operating range of the WLAN-connection will depend on the environment (e.g. thick walls, other WLAN units). When selecting a suitable location for set up, take the signal strength into consideration. Requirements: 99 You are registered on the unit as Administrator or Service Technician (Settings > Access Levels > Administrator/Technician).. Check WLAN-settings with you Network-Administrator. Tap the following on the touch screen Settings > System Settings > Network. Under Interface select WLAN and confirm with OK. Set WLAN. Confirm with OK. Mounting Testing the device In order to test whether the unit has been connected correctly an x-ray can be scanned. Select Test. Select Registered Unit from list. Select mode class. Select mode. Click on Scan Image. Scan image plate, see "11.2 Reading the image data using the computer". 8.2 Tests for start-up The necessary tests (e. g. acceptance test) are regulated by the locally applicable national law. Find out which tests are to be made. Carry out tests in accordance with national law. Electrical safety check Carry out the electrical safety check according to the national law (e. g. housing leakage current). Document the results / V002 19

22 Usage 9 Using the touch screen NOTICE Damage to the touchscreen due to incorrect handling Only operate the touchscreen by using the tip of one's fingers or the stylus. Do not use any sharp instrument (e. g. ballpoint pen) to operate the touchscreens. Protect the touchscreen from water. Operate the touchscreen by tapping the tip of one's fingers or the stylus in order to open a menu or input field. 9.2 Using the menu Menus integrated in the window contain additional commands which can be selected. Click on to open the menu. Select the command. 9.3 Enter text into relevant field Where fields require input, type information into appropriate field. The keyboard-window will open. For further information to any window tip the Help field. 9.1 Navigation Where the contents of a window are not completely visible within the area of the touch screen a scrollbar will appear. To switch to numbers/special symbols Shift key To change to umlauts Click on or activate, to alter the section displayed in the window. 23 9.4 Calling up information on the touch screen When the touchscreen is set to Messages an overview of all previous messages is displayed. Messages are differentiated by various categories as follows: Fault Device has ceased to function. When the error has been remedied, it may be necessary to confirm the error message. Warning Following confirmation, the device will function to a limited extent only. Information Important information for the operator, e.g. the current status of the device. The device will now continue to function. Note Information for the operator. The device will now continue to function. Error-free operation 10 Use image plates correctly Usage Image plates are as flexible as x-ray film. The image plates should not be bent. Do not scratch the image plates. Do not expose the image plates to pressure from hard or pointed objects. Touch Information. The message information will be displayed. Where more than one information item is available, the latest message with the highest priority will be displayed first. For further informationen on messages touch Help. Do not soil the image plates. Protect the image plates against sunlight and ultraviolet light. Store image plates in a light protection cover of the correct size. Image plates will be pre-exposed on exposure to natural radiation and stray x-ray radiation. Protect erased and exposed image plates from x-ray interference. If the image plate has been stored for longer than one week, erase the image plate prior to use / V002 21

24 Usage Do not store image plates in hot or moist conditions. Observe ambient conditions (see "4.2 Image plate"). When used properly, image plates can be exposed, read and erased several hundred times provided there is no mechanical damage. Replace the image plate if there are any signs of damage (e.g. protective layer is damaged or visible scratches) which could interfere with diagnosis. Clean image plates properly (see "12.3 Image plate"). 11 Instructions for use CAUTION Image data on the image plate are not resistant The image data is altered by light, natural X-ray radiation and scattered X-ray radiation. This will lead to a reduction in diagnostic information. Read the image data within 30 minutes of exposure. Never handle exposed image plates without the light protection cover. Do not subject an exposed image plate to X-ray radiation before and after the reading process. Do not X-ray during the reading process if the appliance is in the same room as the X-ray tube Taking an X-ray The exact procedure is given using an 18x24 image plate as example. Required accessories: Image plate Foil cassette the same size as the image plate Preparing the X-ray The image plate must be prepared differently according to actual operational conditions (humidity, cleanliness, mechanical loads). 99 Image plate has been cleaned. 99 Image plate is not damaged. Where using for the first time or when stored for over a week: erase image plate (see "11.4 Erasing the image plate") / V002

25 X-ray with image plate cassette Slide the image plate completely into the flexible foil cassette. The black (inactive) side of the image plate must be visible. Usage X-ray without image plate cassette Slide the image plate directly into a foil sleeve or a light protection cover. The seal must be on the inactive side of the image plate. Place the foil cassette in the rigid cassette. The foam rubber side of the foil cassette must point in the direction of the cover of the X-ray cassette. Alternatively the foil cassette can be packed inside a foil sleeve. The seal must be on the inactive side of the image plate. Close the foil sleeve/light protection cover. Where required the correct position of the image plate (left or right side) can be identified using lead letters. Producing an X-ray exposure Place the X-ray cartridge into the x-ray unit. Make sure that the active side of the image plate points towards the X-ray tube. Set exposure times and setting values on the X-ray appliance. Produce an X-ray exposure. Result: The image data must be read within 30 minutes. Where required the correct position of the image plate (left or right side) can be identified using lead letters / V002 23

26 Usage Preparing reading CAUTION Light erases the image data on the image plate Never handle exposed image plates without the foil cassette. Take the rigid cassette/foil sleeve out of the x-ray unit. In the event of heavy soiling, e. g. from grease or oil, clean the rigid cassette/foil sleeve and protective gloves, e. g. by wiping with a dry and clean cellulose cloth. Where the image plate is used without the image plate cassette, then it must not be removed from its foil sleeve/light protection cover and placed aside. The image data is stored locally on the memory card. In order to transfer the image data to the imaging software the unit must be connected to a computer. Scanning by touch screen can be done either of two ways: Scanning: Before scanning the image data, the project data and exposure settings of the image are entered and then saved with the image data. When no project data and exposure settings of the image are entered then the image is saved to a folder with date and time. Rapid scanning: The image data is saved to a folder with date and time and no additional information. Scanning progress is displayed on the touch screen. Image data is automatically saved. 31 Transferring image data to a computer X-ray images created using the unit touch screen are saved to a memory card. These x-ray images can be imported via a network connection to the imaging software (e.g. EODTec). Connect the appliance to the network. Start the imaging software. Begin image import using the imaging software (for further information refer to the handbook supplied with the imaging software). Save image data. Image data on the memory card is erased as soon as the data transfer has been successful. Usage 11.4 Erasing the image plate The image data is automatically erased after being read. The special ERASE mode only activates the erasure unit of the image plate scanner. Image data is not read. In the following cases, the image plate must be erased with the special mode: When the image plate is used for the first time or if stored for more than a week. Due to a fault, the image data on the image plate has not been erased (error message in the software). Erasing image plates using the computer Choose the special "ERASE" mode in the software. Scan the image plate (see "11.2 Reading the image data using the computer"). Erasing image plates using the touch screen Touch menu on touch screen Rapid Scanning. Select scanning mode ERASE. 34 Usage 13 Maintenance 13.1 Recommended maintenance schedule Only specialist staff or personnel trained by DÜRR NDT may maintain the appliance. Prior to working on the appliance or in case of danger, disconnect it from the mains (e. g. pull the plug). The recommended maintenance intervals are based on operating the appliance 220 working days per year.
