General Important information 1.1 Note on conformity The product was subject to a conformity acceptance process under the European Union guidelines covering these types of device and conforms with the essential requirements of these regulations. Complies with FDA performance standards for laser products except for deviations pursuant to Laser Notice No. 50, date (June, 2007). ETL approval This Class A digital apparatus complies with Canadian ICES-003. This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequence energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmfull interference to radio communications. Operation of these equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his own expense. 1.2 General Notes The Installation and Operating Instructions constitute part of the appliance. They must be made available to the operator. Correct observance of the Installation and Operating Instructions is a basic requirement for using the appliance properly and safely, and new personnel must be instructed accordingly. These Installation and Operating Instructions must be handed over to any subsequent owner or operator of this appliance. The safety of the operator and trouble-free operation of the appliance can only be ensured where original engineering manufactured parts are used. Furthermore, only the accessories and consumables described in the installation and operating instructions or approved by DÜRR MEDICAL for use with this appliance may be used. If other accessories or consumables are used, DÜRR MEDICAL can assume no warranty for the safe operation and reliable function. No liability on the part of the manufacture will be accepted in the case that damage arises through the use of non-approved accessories. DÜRR MEDICAL is responsible for the appliances from the point of view of safety, reliability and function only when installation, new settings, modifications, expansions and repairs are carried out by DÜRR MEDICAL or by a service centre authorised by DÜRR MEDICAL, and when the appliance is used and operated in accordance with the installation and operating instructions. These Installation and Operating Instructions accord with the features of the appliance and the level of engineering at the time of first introduction of the model. All circuits, processes, names, software and appliances quoted are protected under industrial property rights. This translation of the Installation and Operating Instructions has been carried out in good faith. Liability for incorrect translation will not be accepted. The accompanying German version of these Installation and Operating Instructions are to be used as reference; if you have any doubt as to the correct interpretation of the instructions, please consult your dealer. Reprint of the Installation and Operating Instructions, or parts thereof, is only permitted with the written approval of DÜRR MEDICAL. Keep original packing for possible return of the appliance to the supplier. Only the original packing ensures optimum protection for the appliance during transport. If the appliance has to be returned to the manufacturers during the warranty period, DÜRR MEDICAL will accept no liability for damage occurring during transport resulting from poor packaging! 5 1.3 Disposal of appliance Device The EU guideline 2002/96/EC - WEEE (Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment) of 27 January 2003 and its current implementation into national law determines that products are subject to the above-mentioned guideline and must be disposed of especially within the European Economic Area. Questions on the proper disposal of the product can be directed to DÜRR MEDICAL or the dental trade. image plate The image plate contains barium compounds. Dispose of the image plate properly in accordance with the locally applicable regulations. In Europe, dispose of the image plate in accordance with waste code "wastes not otherwise specified". Disposal as domestic waste is not possible. 1.4 Correct Usage The appliance is intended exclusively for visual scanning and processing of image data on an image plate in veterinary medicine. Correct Usage of the appliance also involves observing the Installation and Operating Instructions and adhering to those instructions concerning set-up, operating and maintenance. Every usage which is not in accordance with the Correct Usage above will lead to the guarantees and warranties of DÜRR MEDICAL becoming null and void. The operator is liable for any damage arising through incorrect usage. Correct usage includes compliance with all legal provisions applicable at the place of use with regard work and radiation protection. 1.5 Incorrect Usage The appliance is not intended for visual scanning of image plates in human medicine. Any use of the appliance above and beyond that laid down here s considered to be improper use of the equipment. Any resulting damage thus caused is the sole liability of the user. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for damage caused by improper use. This appliance must not be used in operating theatres or similar types of room, where there is a risk of inflammable materials catching fire. 1.6 Using Peripheral Devices Only peripheral devices (computer, monitor, printer) may be connected to this appliance which conform to standard IEC ( 60950/1). Appliances may only be connected together or connected to other system parts where the safety of patients, operators and also the environment is ensured. Where the absolute safety for operator, patient or environment is not apparent then the operator is expected to call on expert advice, e.g. from the manufacturer or an expert, that such connections are safe before proceeding. 1.7 Using image plates The scanner may only be operated in combination with cassettes from Dürr NDT or DÜRR MEDICAL. See also the section on image plates. 1.8 Use of software Only software specifically approved by DÜRR MEDICAL (e.g. Vet-Exam Plus, Vet-Exam Intra) may be used. Use of any other software must be expressly approved by DÜRR MEDICAL. The following operating systems are supported - Windows XP Professional 32-bit from Service Pack 3, Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium or higher and Windows 7 32-bit / 64-bit. 2013/09/ /30 5

6 2. Safety 2.1 General notes on safety The appliance has been developed and designed in such a way that dangers are effectively ruled out if operated in accordance with the intended use. However, we feel it is important to describe the following safety measures in order to remove any likelihood of danger. When operating this appliance, all local and national rules and regulations must be observed! This appliance must not be converted or altered in any way. DÜRR MEDICAL can assume no warranty or liability for modified or adapted appliances. In the interests of safe usage of the appliance, both operator and owner are responsible for seeing that all relevant regulations and provisions are observed. Opening an appliance which is still connected to the mains power supply is dangerous and could lead to laser radiation Class 3B. Installation must be carried out by a technical expert. The operator must carefully check the appliance for safety of function and proper working condition before every use. The operator must be trained in the correct operation of the appliance. 2.2 Electrical safety instructions The appliance may only be connected to a correctly installed electrical socket. Before connecting to the electricity supply, the appliance must be inspected and checked to ensure that the supply voltage and the supply frequency correspond to that of the local electrical supply. Before initial use and start-up, the appliance and all supply lines must be checked for any signs of damage. Damaged supply lines and connections must be replaced immediately. Never touch persons and open connectors of the appliance simultaneously. When using the appliance, observe all the relevant electrical safety procedures. Before opening the device, unplug at the mains and remove all power mains plug! / /09/06

10 5. System requirements To operate CR 7 VET the components listed under sections 5.1 and 5.2 will be required. The are not supplied with the contents of delivery of the CR 7 VET. 5.1 Monitor Use monitors for digital X-ray with higher light intensity and wide contrast range. Strong room lighting, direct sunlight and reflections all serve to reduce the diagnostic capabilities of the X-ray exposures. In Germany, an acceptance test in accordance with DIN V can be carried out. 13 7.1 Function of individual components 1. Image plate The image plate serves as the exposure medium for X-rays and stores the image data. 2 Light protection covers Protects the image plate from contamination and dirt. Prevent image data on the image plate from being erased. 3. Operational LEDs General information concerning the operating state of the appliance is displayed. LED green: ready for operation is displayed LED blue: status of data communication is displayed LED yellow: status of the cleaning operation is displayed 4. Cleaning key Pressing the key will set the unit into the cleaning position or return the unit from the cleaning position back into position ready for operation. 5. On / Off key Switch on: press the On / Off key. Switch off: press the On / Off key for 2 seconds. The appliance shuts down, the green and blue LEDs blink alternately. Complete shut down: press the On / Off key continuously until all the LEDs go out. 7. Cover Covers the moving parts of the film feed section. This can be removed for cleaning and disinfecting. 8. Display This display module presents, depending on the software used, various information on the appliance status, e.g. the name, room used or the tooth number when using Vet-Exam Intra. In the case that an error message is displayed, see section on Tips for Operators and Service Technician. 9. Cover lock Unlocks the cover for opening. 10. Film collection tray After scanning and erasure the image plates fall into the detachable film collection tray. 11. Interior image transport Inside the unit the image plates are transported through the film scanning and film erasure units. 12. Feed slot The film feed slot is where the image plates, inside their opened light protection covers, are placed so that the film catch takes hold and the film is fed to the image plate transport system. 6. Status LEDs Displays information on status of image plate transport. LED red: Fault LED yellow: Image plate transport occupied LED green: New image plates can be fed in 2013/09/ /30 13

14 8. Functional description CR 7 VET transforms the intraoral image data stored on the image plate into a digital X-ray image. This image can then be viewed and edited using the connected PC system. Image plate Photomultiplier Laser source X-rays The image plate (1) is packed, disinfected and exposed inside the light protection cover (2). After exposure the light protection cover is again disinfected. Scanning the image data Pressing the On / Off key (5) will switch on the CR 7 VET. This activates the scanning mode using x-ray software, e.g. Vet-Exam Intra. Once the green status LED (6) is lit, the image plate in its prepared (opened) light protection cover can be placed centrally on the film feed tray (12). The image plate is now pushed carefully out of its secured and opened light protection cover into the film transport (11) using the fingers. The light protection cover stays in position at the film feed slot. As soon as the light protection cover is released, it can be removed. Parabolic mirror Reflection layer Rotating disc Pentaprism Further X-ray images After removing the image plates from the film collection tray it is recommended that they be repacked into a light protection cover. If used carefully it is possible to reuse the image plates several hundred times. Before reuse the image plates should be checked for signs of dirt or damage. Damaged image plates must not be reused. Once taken up by the film transport (11) the image plate is fed to the scanner unit. Here the image data on the image plate is scanned using a laser and the information transmitted to the PC. A window on the monitor shows the progress of this procedure. After scanning the image plate proceeds to the erasure unit, where any remaining image data is erased. Afterwards the image plate falls into the collection tray (10) / /09/06

15 Mounting Only fully-qualified personnel may set-up, install or operate this appliance. 9. Transport and packaging Check that the delivery contents are complete and check for any signs of transport damage. Completely empty the packaging. CR 7 VET Do not expose the VistaScan Mini to any strong shocks which could damage the appliance. Damage through shock. During operation and the switching off process (blue and green operational LEDs blinking alternately) ensure that the appliance is not moved in any way whatsoever, as the moving parts must be allowed to stop moving completely. 10. Set-up 10.1 Room for set-up Install the CR 7 VET only in a closed, dry and well ventilated room. The room temperature should not fall below + 10 C or exceed + 35 C. Danger of short circuit due to build up of condensation. The system can only be put into operation once the appliance has warmed up to room temperature and it is dry. Installation in a purpose-built room, e.g. in a boiler room or in a wet room is not permitted. Do not expose the CR 7 VET to direct sunlight. The ambient light must be reduced if necessary. The maximum light intensity is 1000 Lux. There must be no source of interference in the room for set-up (e.g. strong magnetic field). These interference fields may cause malfunctions in the CR 7 VET. 2013/09/ /30 15

16 10.2 Set-up alternatives Table set-up CR 7 VET can be set up as a tabletop appliance. In order to avoid problems when scanning the image data, the CR 7 VET should be set up so that will not be subject to knocks, vibration or similar. Wall mounting The CR 7 VET can be mounted onto any wall using the special wall mounting bracket (order number ). Installation of the wall mounting bracket can be found in the instruction leaflet order number / Electrical connection Before initial start-up compare the operating voltage of 24 V DC and the supply voltage 100 V V are consistent with the information on the model identification plate. The connection ports are in the recesses on the rear side of the appliance. Where inconsistent remove any incorrect (country-specific) adapter/plug. Connect appropriate country-specific adapter/ plug. Remove the rear cover of the CR 7 VET. Insert connector of the power unit to the connection ports of the CR 7 VET. Place the power cable into the power outlet socket. Replace the cover. When operating the appliance, the rear cover must be in place / /09/06

17 12. Start-up and first use 12.1 CR 7 VET Installation and configuration may only be carried out by a DÜRR DTAL trained and certified person or one of our own service technicians. The CR 7 VET is equipped with four connection ports which are located under the cover on the rear side of the unit: V - Connection The 24 V -connection provides the power to operate the CR 7 VET. 15. Reset button Pressing and holding the Reset button for seconds while switching on returns all network settings of the unit to the original factory settings. Reset is confirmed and the CR 7 VET Plus display shows "Factory Reset". 16. AUX-connection The AUX-connection is used for diagnosis purposes by our Service Technician. The AUXconnection can be used to connect auxiliary devices for testing and for trouble-shooting. Only auxiliary devices approved by DÜRR MEDICAL may be used Network connection status LEDs The status LEDs for networking show whether connection to a network has been established and whether data can be transmitted. 18. Network connection CR 7 VET can be operated in a network. 19. USB-connection CR 7 VET can be operated through an USB port. Where CR 7 VET is connected to both USB and a network, the network takes priority. 2013/09/ /30 17

18 12.2 X-ray device settings Check the following appliance-specific standard values and adapt as required. Reference conditions: House cat (approx. 6 kg) to medium sized dog (approx. 20 kg) The exposure times indicated in the table for tube length 20 cm were determined with a dental x-ray unit with DC emitter (focal point 0.7 mm; tube length 20 cm). The exposure times for tube length 30 cm were calculated from the exposure times for tube length 20 cm. 19 Inactive side: Use 13. Image plates 4 Active side: Image plates are toxic: Image plates are therefore to always be used in a light protection cover. If the image plates or parts thereof are swallowed, the image plate must be removed immediately. If a light protection cover is damaged when biting on it, then the mouth must be rinsed out thoroughly with copious amounts of water General The CR 7 VET may only be operated in combination with image plates PLUS from Dürr NDT or DÜRR MEDICAL. Use of any other image plates must be expressly approved by DÜRR MEDICAL. Exposure of the image plate must always be carried out on the active side: active side: the active side is light blue. This side is also marked with a positioning guide. inactive side: the inactive side is black. This is printed with the size, manufacturer s information and the word "Back". Furthermore, the inactive side is surrounded by a silver edge which makes positioning together with the light protection cover easier. In one corner there is a silver dot; this replaces the slight indentation found on conventional X-ray film. This dot should always be set in the direction of the occlusal plane. This allows easier orientation of the X-ray exposure. 2013/09/ /30 19

20 13.2 Working with image plates Image plates must be visibly checked for signs of damage. Damaged image plates (e.g. a torn outer layer, or visible scratches, which will affect the diagnostic assessment) must be replaced. image plates are flexible like X-ray film. do not bend or subject to pressure. do not scratch or get dirty. do not put in an autoclave Storing image plates store image plates in a dark place. Do not store in hot or moist conditions. store intraoral image plates in a light protection cover of the appropriate size. if an image plate is stored for longer than 24 hours, then it should be erased again before the next X-ray exposure. See section 16.5 protect from direct sunlight and ultraviolet beams. if stored in the X-ray room itself then the image plates must be protected from pre-exposure caused by X-ray radiation / /09/06

Light protection covers light protection cover light protection covers protect the patient from infection by contaminated image plates. protect the image plate from contamination and dirt. protect the image plates from stray light. is available in different sizes just like image plates. Choose the most appropriate size. The light protection cover is a disposable article and must not be reused. 7 For information on using light protection covers see the appropriate instructions for use, order number / Protective cover The protective cover is designed to protect the CR 7 VET from dust and dirt when standing for long periods. Pull the protective cover, with the yellow marking towards the front, forwards over the unit until it is completely covered. When not in use store the protective cover in a clean dry place. 8 Danger of suffocation Keep the protective cover away from children. 2013/09/ /30 21

22 16. X-ray Observe the notes on hygiene regulations under section 17. Cleaning and Disinfection Preparation for X-raying Image plates can be prematurely exposed by natural X-ray radiation or by stray X-ray radiation. 9 The image plate should be erased before using it for the first time or after storage of more than 24 hours. Refer to section 16.5 Erasure of image data Slide the image plate completely into the light protection cover. The black (inactive) side of the image plate must be visible. Peel off the white sticky strip and press firmly to close the opening of the light protection cover. The light protection cover is a disposable article and must not be reused. Disinfect the light protection cover using a disinfection wipe (e.g. Orochemie B60) before positioning. Alternatively, use a disinfectant spray (e.g. Orochemie B30) on a soft, fluff-free cloth instead of a disinfectant wipe / /09/06

23 16.2 X-ray exposure Danger of infection! Wear protective gloves when positioning the image plate. The image plates are marked with a symbol. The symbol is visible in the X-ray exposure, and makes orientation during diagnosis easier. The image plate should be positioned so that the symbol will not affect the diagnostic usefulness of the X-ray exposure. 12 Place the image plate inside the light protection cover as normal. The silver point on the inactive side must face the occlusal area. The active side of the image plate must point in the direction of the X-ray tube. Damage to the image plate Only use handling systems which will not cause any damage to either the light protection cover or the image plates. Handling systems which have sharp edges should be avoided where possible. Set exposure time and settings on the X-ray appliance. Taking the X-ray exposure. The image data present on the image plate must be processed and scanned within 30 minutes of exposure. 2013/09/ /30 23

24 Preparation for reading out the image data Danger of infection! Wear protective gloves when removing image plates. Remove the image plate in the light protection cover. If the light protection cover or the gloves are considerably dirty, e.g. from blood, then before disinfection the cover must be given a quick dry clean, e.g. by wiping with a clean piece of lint. Clean and disinfect the light protection cover and the gloves with a disinfectant wipe (e.g. Orochemie B60). Alternatively, use a disinfectant spray (e.g. Orochemie B30) on a soft, lint-free cloth. Lay the image plate down in the light protection cover in the disinfectant wipe. Damage to the CR 7 VET Before handling the image plates, hands should be completely clean and free of any traces of powder from protective gloves. Otherwise there could be a loss of image data or even to the transfer of bacteria. Switch on PC and monitor. Switch on the CR 7 VET at the On/Off switch (5). After switching on the appliance needs to go through initialisation. The display on the CR 7 VET will show "INIT SYS- TEM". When ready the green operating LED will become illuminated. "READY" will also be shown on the display. Start the software. The sequence of the read-out procedure can differ, depending on the software used. See also the manual of the software used. Select animal owner. Select measure for the animal. Activate the CR 7 VET in the software. Confusing patient X-rays The software ensures that the x-rays are always allotted to patients one after the other in the order of activated patients. In order to avoid confusing these X-rays from those of other patients only X-ray exposures for this (one) patient should be scanned at one time. 2013/09/ /30 25

26 Operational LED and status LED are both green: When the CR 7 VET is started from stand-by mode the green status LED blinks. Additionally, a progress bar will appear on the display. As soon as the appliance is ready for use, the status LED will show green. Open the light protection cover straight along the adhesive edge (V-cut). 15 Loss of image data Image data on the image plate will be lost when exposed to light. Never handle exposed image plates without the light protection cover. Place the light protection cover with its image plate centrally and parallel (opened side of the light protection cover should face down, inactive side of the image plate to face operator) onto the feed insert transport. The film grip mechanism automatically moves forwards and takes hold of the light protection cover with the image plate. Slide the image plate out of its light protection cover downwards into the appliance until the image plate is automatically taken up by the transport. The light protection cover is held by the grip mechanism and is not taken up by the appliance. Scanner progress can be monitored on a small inner window on the PC screen / /09/06

27 17 Status LED is yellow: Do not feed any more image plates. Once the scanning process has been completed the grip mechanism automatically returns to start. Remove the empty light protection cover. Status LED changes from yellow to green. Save the X-ray image in Vet-Exam Intra. Either insert a new image plate for scanning or turn off the appliance at the On/Off switch. When the On/Off switch is pressed for 3 seconds then the appliance shuts down. This can take a few moments (green and blue LEDs blink alternately and the display will show a progress bar). The appliance will shut down completely. Do not move the appliance during this phase. When the CR 7 VET is switched off, it can be covered and protected using the protective cover. 2013/09/ /30 27

28 16.5 Erasing the image data After scanning, the image plate automatically runs through the erasure unit. Image data still held on the image plate will be erased. Afterwards the image plate falls into the collection tray. Special mode "Erase" The image plate must be erased again if: the image plate has been stored and not used for longer than 24 hours. The image data on the image plate were not erased due to a fault in the CR 7 VET. (Error message from software) 18 The special mode enables the erasure unit in CR 7 VET to be activated alone. No image data will be transmitted to the software. To erase again: Choose the special mode "Erase" in the software. Place the open light protection cover with its image plate in the insert slot. Slide the image plate out of its light protection cover downwards into the appliance until the image plate is automatically taken up by the transport / /09/06

29 17. Disinfection and Cleaning Only use disinfection and cleaning agents specifically approved or manufactured by DÜRR MEDICAL. Other cleaning agents and disinfectants could damage the CR 7 VET and its accessories Light protection covers Disinfect the light protection cover using a disinfection wipe (e.g. Orochemie B60) before and after positioning. Alternatively, use a disinfectant spray (e.g. Orochemie B30) on a soft, fluff-free cloth instead of a disinfectant wipe. Observe the active working time of the solution carefully. The fluids must be completely dried Image plates Damage to image plates Do not put image plates in the autoclave! Disinfectant baths will destroy image plates! We strongly recommend the use of special cleaning cloths for image plates, order number CCB351A Dirt on either side should be cleaned off using a soft non-fluffy cloth. Remaining dirt can be removed with a special cleaning agent from the cleaning set and by applying a circular wiping motion. Before re-usage, the image plate must be completely dry Protective cover The protective cover can be cleaned using a damp cloth, and then disinfected using a disinfection wipe (e.g. Orochemie B60 ). 2013/09/ /30 29

30 CR 7 VET Damage to the CR 7 VET Fluids must not be allowed to enter the inner parts of the appliance, therefore do not use spray disinfection or cleaning solutions on the CR 7 VET! Appliance surfaces Where the outer surfaces of the appliance show signs of contamination or visible dirt, clean and disinfect the unit. Clean the surfaces of the CR 7 VET using a damp cloth, and then use a disinfection wipe (e.g. Orochemie B60). Any dirt present at the entry and exit areas must be cleaned before scanning. 22 Input unit Where the film feed slot shows signs of contamination or visible dirt, clean and disinfect the unit. Press cleaning button. The film grip moves to a central position. The yellow LED is lit. The display on the CR 7 VET Plus will show "CLEANING POSITION". Press the release button element and simultaneously lift the cover up and away from the unit. Lift the locking plate up and off as shown. Damage to the CR 7 VET No parts of the CR 7 VET are to be disinfected with a thermal disinfector or autoclave. The plastic parts will be destroyed by the heat! Internal parts can be cleaned using a damp cloth, and then disinfected using a disinfection wipe (e.g. Orochemie B60). The cover and the film catch mechanism can be disinfected using an instrument disinfectant (e.g. Orochemie A20). Replace film catch mechanism. Replace cover. Press button for cleaning. The film grip moves to a central position. The green LED is lit / /09/06

31 18. Maintenance Only specialist staff or personnel trained by DÜRR MEDICAL may maintain the appliance. Prior to working on the appliance or in case of danger, disconnect it from the mains (e.g. pull the plug). The recommended maintenance intervals are based on using the appliance for some 15 intraoral images per day and 220 working days per year. Do not expose used image plates to light. Exposure and the scanning of the image data should be carried out within half an hour. Clean the image plate by wiping carefully using a soft cloth and special cleaning agent taken from the cleaning set.
