It s All About Me!
It s All About Me! You!
Who are we? Roger Miller Owner and Creative Director Video & Event Consultation, Creative Services and Production Since 1990 Script to screen service Broad experience base Micro-business remvideoevent.com
Agenda Why Video? What brought you here? It s all about M.E. (My Enterprise) Some content building and critiquing Mostly tech & techniques
Assumptions: You want or need a video on your website Never produced a video / been a while. You don t have a professional camera and edit suite handy Do not know the process. May want/need to do yourself.
The short story Keep It Short and Simple (KISS) 1 minute presentation :60 is about 140 words. Twitter is 140 characters! Approximately 12 lines of 12 point text
REM s 133 words REM Video & Event Company is a dynamic communication service. Words, sound and imagery are put together to inform, entertain, compel, educate and instill desired outcomes. We use video, the web, elearning and live events to accomplish this for our clients. Our focus is telling your story. We help you tune it, determine the best way to present it and then we deliver. To do this we take the time to understand your goal and how it fits your audience s needs and interests. We are adept at current video production processes so we can apply the right technology to move your message and brand to its intended recipient. We offer a complete service, from the initial creative spark, through production and finally delivery as a finished product or experience. We are all about you.
REM s 133 words
REM s 133 words When you saw that, what did you think it needed? What was good about it? (I have thick skin speak your mind!)
Your Story Topic the elevator speech (Today s example) or whatever Perhaps a regular blog? Excellent tool to build your presence on Social Media Prep Start with an outline Hit the high points stay out of the weeds 140 words per minute average / Approx. 12 lines Summarize and put in listener s context Speak it out loud still ring true or stilted? Alter until you are happy with it Goal is a conversation or questions from viewer
Your Vlog Tools Camera Audio Support Edit
Camera Multi-use device: ipad, iphone, Android device, Device video expectations: Typically bad audio there is a cure Difficult to use well some tips Consumer video camera
iphone / ipad as Camera No VERTICAL VIDEO it just looks wrong and wastes space
iphone / ipad as Camera Do not use the zoom It isn t a true optical zoom so it enlarges pixels (distortion) Instead always set to widest view and reposition device for better picture
iphone / ipad as Camera
iphone / ipad as Camera Take control Use manual controls Exposure lock prevents focus and exposure searching (picture breathing ) Record to highest quality available no matter what you are finishing to Use clip on lens adapters inexpensive for wide & tighter shots
Clip-on Lens Adapters
Audio Do Not Use the built in microphone unless you are about 1 foot from the device (likely not the case ever) Take Control Set your audio manually using your presentation voice If you have a shotgun mic on a camera you will pick up well up to 6 away Silence all distracting sounds (did you pick a good location?) An inexpensive lavalier (lav) will give you far better performance than the built-in mic.
Your Studio Lighting is very important!
Background light Background light Fill light - weaker Background Subject Camera Keylight - stronger
Your Studio The set Appropriate for your message Room enough to setup and move about Quiet enough for sound Almost ready to Push the button!
You and your Environment You Adequate rest before the shoot No dairy! Wardrobe Avoid tight stripes and high contrast clothing (black coat and white shirt) Avoid noisy jewelry
Where do I look? Find the lens on your device Position your body / frame your shot Tape a little marker to show where to look Shifty eyes Do not look back at your picture as you go trust yourself
How do I Deliver? Don t worry about getting it perfect Cut points Paper prompting Be yourself Take a deep breath, pause and smile before speaking Use gestures, but not extremes Be confident, you know this. If you don t, rehearse until you do. Take your time when you speak, there is no rush.
Your transfer internet or card file connection Your edit imovie / Moviemaker / online tools Edit Your video server YouTube and others
Stuff you may need Shopping list Visit B&H photo for greatest variety and choice, but shop local when you can: National Camera is a great choice! Tripod millions of choices Craigslist
Stuff you may need Gorilla Pod from JOBY - $15 (There are lots of tools from JOBY) Clamp - Pro Master, which is around $10 from National Camera
Stuff you may need Mic $30 $150 Audio Technica was $30 at Microcenter Wide angle lens Olloclip for iphone about $80
Stuff you may need Remote shutter release HISY HN226 Bluetooth Camera Shutter for Android and ios $25 Brands / Stores to Explore JOBY Olloclip Manfrotto B&H Photo National Camera
Stuff you may need
Roger s Top Ten Review
Top Ten Tips Almost every device you are aiming at are widescreen: Computers, TV s, Social Media feeds, websites and your videos will look best on the phones horizontally as well Best use of available real estate 1. No vertical video
Top Ten Tips Weird movement at cuts is very distracting If you don t have a tripod you can buy small tabletop minipods like a Gorilla pod very inexpensively. You still will need an adaptor like a Pro Master Tripod mount, around $10 to connect to the tripod. 2. Use a tripod
Top Ten Tips You are not actually zooming, but enlarging the picture s pixels instead that s distortion. Move the camera or the subject instead 3. Don't use the iphone's zoom
Top Ten Tips 3 small lights can make a world of difference. There is art and technique to using them (another workshop), but the result is a staggering degree of difference in the end product. If you're mixing lights with daylight put 5500 degree K (Kelvin) lamps in your fixtures or you can also hack together a decent lighting kit from a big box store for under $100! If you can't get your hands on any studio lights, the iphone looks great in natural light, so position yourself facing a window and use the sun and consider reflectors (anything white) to fill in light. 4. Lighting
Top Ten Tips Auto focus and exposure is great of pictures, but really distracting on video, because it adds unwanted movement (picture flexing ) because it is always searching. 5. Use the exposure lock
Top Ten Tips 6. Get your microphone close to your subject and keep it there. Inexpensive lav s are going to be a world better than the built in because it is only 4-6 away from your mouth.
Top Ten Tips 7. Use a clip-on lens adapters for wide or distant shots B&H, Adorama, Best Buy, National Camera and many other photo stores carry clipon lens adapters like the Olloclip and others.
Top Ten Tips Use a computer, not your phone. More real estate. Easier to work interfaces, better audio, just too many reasons to skip the phone. imovie on Apple and MovieMaker on Windows are already installed. 9. Edit on your computer
Top Ten Tips Even if you can t afford a producer to do all of the work, it can be worth a few hours of consultation money to answer questions, dig you out of a problem you are having, etc. 10. Ask for help
