AVAILABLE LIGHT any source of light that is not explicitly supplied by the photographer for the purpose of taking photos. All photos were taken in an instant, nothing was planned only the use of available light

NATURALISTIC LIGHT soft and usually not too contrasty, and basically looks like NATURE did it and not a person Steven Spielberg always used naturalistic light

HARD LIGHT/ SPECULAR LIGHT A hoe filter An example of hard light is the x pro ii filter

SOFT LIGHT/ DIFFUSE LIGHT light that tends to "wrap" around objects, casting diffuse shadows with soft edges. soft light is used to soften edges around subjects

TOP LIGHT/ UNDER LIGHT A light that shines down from directly above the subject The top light shined brightly above the stage.

Chapter 12: Lighting Rocio Perez, Jesus Rosales

Lighting Contrast The relationship in light intensity between the brightly lit areas and the shadow areas. The light contrast in the picture above shows both lit and shadow areas.

Low Key/High Contrast and High Key/Low Contrast Low key lighting is associated with night, emotion, tension, tragedy, and mystery. High key lighting makes everything appear bright and cheery often used for day time scenes and comedy. Low Key lighting is for black and white images. High key lighting is evenly distributed around the set.

Wattage: 1k, 2k, 5k, 10k Wattage is a measurement of how much electric powers are used. Lensed spotlights: 10k, 5k senior, 2k junior, 1k baby Inky is 250 watts or less

Inverse Square Law The inverse-square law is a principle that expresses the way radiant energy propagates through space. The rule states that the power intensity per unit area from a point source, if the rays strike the surface at a right angle, varies inversely according to the square of the distance from the source. The inverse law can determine your distant from a light source

Lamp head/ bulb Bulbs differ in the type and color of light they emit. Examples of bulbs are the tungsten, HMI, and fluorescent.

Lighting

The lighting in scenes affect the influence it has on its audience. Available Light Movie scenes may be lit with this type of light. Available light is any natural light that s accessible or man-made lights. Man- made lighting would be light bulbs, flashlights, etc. Mostly any light that the filmmaker is able to control.

Naturalistic Light Most films nowadays strive for a more naturalistic light. Naturalistic lighting is a type of lighting you can find in the real world. Lighting that is frequented in the film space is simulated when it comes to actually filming, this allows the effect of naturalistic lighting. Motivated lights are lights that seem to come from a logical source, this can also be used to create naturalistic lighting.

Can be created with fairly compacted lighting fixtures. Hard Light/ Specular Light Hardness of a light describes the type of shadow it casts. Hard light= specular light, it s made up of parallel rays that create clean shadows that neatly outline shapes of objects. Can be produced artificially with lensed.

Soft Light/ Diffuse Light Soft light= diffuse light Less directional than hard light. Made up of rays going in many different directions. Creates softer shadows than specular lights. Hardly casts shadows but when it does

Vocabulary Terms Natalie Pedroza, Anthony Gomez, Damian Pleitez

Tungsten-Halogen-Lights Tungsten Halogen Lights consist of bulbs that employ a tungsten filament surrounded by halogen gas encased in a quartz glass bulb. Tungsten Halogen Lights differ greatly from florescent lights, especially due to the tint the bulb gives off in comparison to those of the fluorescent lights.

HMI Lights HMI lights are an efficient lighting source that produces daylight-balanced illumination. In the film industry HMI lights are used quite often due to the effects it gives when seen through a camera.

Fluorescent Bulbs Bulbs that fall into different categories; compact fluorescents, conventional fluorescents, institutional settings. Fluorescent bulbs are known to be more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs

Format (arrange) All most all camcorders can shoot in more than one format because of that you ll need to make choices about resolution.

Exampl es 180p or 480i Type of compression ( codec ) Data rate Choices of progression/interlace scanning Typically you use one format for whole production and on some cameras selection, recording format is a single menu choice that sets of host of things at once. Example: Sony Camera By choosing 1080/60i FX format you ll record 1920 x 1080 HD at 30 fps

Sentence for Format When using a camera you can use either one or more formats during the shot.

Framerate The frequency at which frames in a television, picture, film, or video sequence are displayed. Ex: helps action scenes look smooth with frame rate Sentence: The higher framerate is supposed to make fast action scenes look smoother.

Focus (auto and manual) Auto: Camera s auto focus intelligently adjusts the camera lens to obtain focus on the subject, and can mean the difference between a sharp photo and a missed opportunity. Sentence: Phones automatically obtain focus on any subject it s facing. M anual: A manual focus camera is one in which the user has to adjust the focus of the lens by hand. Sentence: I prefer a camera with a manual focus so that I can have more control over my photos.

LIGHTING Aliyah Leon, Jaylene Mejia, Aldy Estrada, Francisco Ramos

REFLECTORS Reflectors are used for filling shadows and reducing lighting contrast on days where light is too abundant, such as on a sunny day. There are different types of reflectors that have different purposes, such as the Flexfill reflector, which is popular for on location shoots. I need to find my Flexfill reflector for my cousin s photoshoot at the park this weekend.

EYE/OBIE/BASH LIGHTS: These lights are used to illuminate and draw attention to the eyes to give the actor added personality. I used bash lights at today s shoot, they added so much character!

LED LIGHTS: LED Lights are very compact units that produce a heat-free and non color shifting lighting experience. LED lights are very powerful and have a longer battery life than other lights available on the market, such as the Tungsten bulb. These lights are also eco-friendly and are able to maintain a longer color temperature. I finally purchased my first LED Light, it s so amazing!

SPILLED LIGHT CONTROL: Spilled light is unwanted light that illuminates an area that was not supposed to be illuminated. To control this issue, spilled light is controlled by many types of mechanisms. Some of these mechanisms include: flags, barndoors, nets, cucoloris, and snoots. I was filming the other day, all the spilled light was so annoying! Example of a snoot Example of a cucoloris

C-STANDS C-Stands (or century stands) are special types of lighting stands that are used to hang and position light modifiers such as silks, nets, or flags. I bought a C-Stand this week, it s so helpful.

VOCABULARY TERMS Priscila Campos, Marnelia Flowers, Brian Mena

Video Sensor: light sensitive computer chip Light sensitive electronic chip that converts the image formed by the light coming through the lens into a grid of electrical charges The video sensor is a chip that the camera focuses its image. CCD ( Charged Coupled Device ) CMOS ( Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor )

Video finder Zebra = Exposure Indicator Black and white diagonal lines which appear in the viewfinder and are superimposed over areas that are at a predetermined exposure level Zebra lines give an indication of exposure levels.

Pixels (picture elements) A minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed Pixels are small little dots that make up the images on (computer) displays.

Camera power The source of power for the camera. Without camera power, the camera will not work. AC power supply (power & charge battery) Battery (Ni-Cad, NiMH, Li Ion)

When a typical table lamp is used on a movie set its called a practical Practicals are used on everyday movie sets

It is a device for varying the brightness of an electric light Dimmers can be used to brighten or dim the brightness of a light

Gels are a common way to change the color of light they are made flexible transparent and plastic that comes in small sheets and large rolls Gels can be used to change the color from a white to a variety of colors.

Dichroic filters are another way to raise temperature it is sometimes called a dike which is a special blue glass filter used to convert 3200K tungsten sources I was shooting with tungsten filters and used dichroic filters to make the light look more like

The key is the brightest light and casts the primary shadows The fill light is filling in the shadows that is produced by the key The back light is placed on the opposite side of the subjects from The camera high enough to view and gives a glow to the subject Three point lighting is set up in a triangular set up casting light from 3 different areas
