Pure Art 3.5, a black-and-white photography exhibition, brings the basics of silver halides images back to the frontline amidst the wide acceptance of pixilated images. During a discussion session after the opening ceremony of the exhibition on 22 Dec 2007, participants and the organizing team came to a conclusion that there are still strong followers for the fast disappearing art of chemical based black-andwhite photography. This not only justifies the continued existence of our darkroom and monochrome course, in a more serious tone, is still part of visual arts. Supporters are not only restricted to the three generations of members within the Club who participated in this exhibition. There is a bigger group among young students who are still in the film user group. With such interest, let us hope that films and photographic papers, especially those for black-and-white photography, will still be available for as long as photography exist. In the other extreme, we brought the natural beauty of the underwater world to the Singapore National Museum. This is a rarely touched field in photography as it combines two interest, diving and photography, both are as expensive. However, participants, especially those attended the half day workshop with practical dives at the Underwater World Sentosa, soon realized it is totally different kind of experience to shoot underwater and on land. This is still a chicken-and-egg question, whether photographers should take up diving lessons or divers learning photography. Needless to say, two major events in two months is a taxing experience for the committee and staff at SAFRA. Volunteers did came forward at the most crucial moments to made sure our events run as smooth as all SAFRA events should be. That is not all for the year. Just concluded was supporting of the Sentosa Flower Festival Magical Moments photo competition and another photo competition organized by Fo Guang Shan (Singapore). Coming your way is SAFRA Photographic Club s signature event, the SAFRA Photographer of the Year. It will definitely be a non-stop shooting year ahead for members. So, don t even bother to keep your equipment in the dry cabinet. 4 Photo Club News Text by 2SG (NS) Felix tan, Photos by CPL (NS) Robin Ng and Mr Tan Kay Hian At the opening ceremony, (front roll from left) Mr Yip Hoi Kee, Hon Advisor and founding member of SAFRAPC; Mr Felix Tan, Organizing Chairman; Mr Phua Bah Lee, Guest-of-honor and first President of SAFRA; LTC (NS) Gregory Chan, Chairman, SAFRA MF Executive Committee; Mr Edward Leong, Dy GM; Mr William Tan, Chairman, SAFRAPC. Pure Art 3.5 was by far one of the most daring projects that SAFRA Photographic Club has embarked on. What started as an avenue to showcase the various photographic forms that the club caters for our national servicemen, it has since become an avenue to promote and to showcase the artistic value and the techniques of Black & White photography. Mr Phua Bah Lee, who is also the Director of Ngee Ann Kong Si, touring the exhibits with Mr Yip Hoi Kee and 2SG (NS) Felix Tan. And it was these intentions that Pure Art 3.5 was formed. Spanning 3 and a half generations of photographers from SAFRA Photographic Club, the exhibition highlighted the difference in perspectives photographers from different era appreciate the beauties and the art of traditional Black & White photography. Contributing to this exhibition-cum-seminar were members of SAFRA Photographic Club from 1972 to today. The event, held at the Ngee Ann Cultural Centre from the 22nd December to the 31 st December, was also in conjunction with SAFRA s 35th Anniversary celebration. These photographs definitely represented 0 : A black-and-white just how far the Photographic Club has become an indelible part of SAFRA Mount Faber as well as SAFRA itself. The seminar focusing on the topic of Black & White photography in the 21st century was attended by members of SAFRA Photographic Club, photography enthusiasts as well as photography students from educational institutions in Singapore. Among the speakers were three members of SAFRA Photographic Club from the very first batch to the latest giving their thoughts about Black & White photography, namely Bernard Teo; Desmond Teo and Cindy Ann. Being the first of its kind in SAFRA Photographic Club, the seminar engaged the audience in a lively debate about the state of Black & White photography in today s world, which is very much reliant on digital darkroom techniques. Consider very much a newbie to this art for m, Cindy Ann remarked that when she first got her taste in Black & White photography, s h e w a s l i k e a s p o n g e t h a t keeps absorbing, i m a g i n i n g a n d exploring [and that she wanted] to know more about B&W printing [and] to experiment them. Whilst some have said that B&W photography is a very niche field and that B&W photography can only be appreciated by a few who consider this form of photography ART, Bernard Teo, an advisor with the SAFRA Photographic Club disagrees, the fundamental basic of photography actually started with B & W p h o t o g r a p h y a n d m a n y professional photographers and photo enthusiasts do enjoy and appreciate B&W photography. Photographers who had gone through B&W course and printed their own photos will never forget the beauty of B&W photography as a Fine Art-form. Similarly, Desmond Teo, who teaches the monochrome course at SAFRA Photographic Club added that during this age of digital world, you can say that it is a niche field. For me, the challenge is to get the right tone out in the photographic print. It seems like Black & White photography is here to stay as long as there are many who can appreciate this art form in its entirety. Nevertheless, Bernard Teo cautioned that in the beginning of digital age, traditional B&W photos are far better than images taken from a digital camera. But in the last 2 to 3 years digital imaging technologies had improved at a very fast paced both hardware and software. Now we are able to produce a digital image that is very close to traditional B&W photos, almost on par However, lately, people are coming back into traditional B&W photography, this must be due to digital photographers wanting to get back to basics to understand more about B&W photography. Its most definitely heartening to learn that there are still youths in the crowd Leading the discussions on stage are (front left) CPL (NS) Edmund Low, moderator; Mr Bernard Teo, SAFRAPC Advisor; Mr Desmond Teo, SAFRAPC Vice-Chairman; Cindy Ann, member; and 2SG (NS) Felix Tan, Organising Chairman.

photographic exhibition Photo Club News today that will stand by the artistic value of Black & White photography. As Cindy Ann would put it, traditional methods in B&W photography are far outweigh that of digital imaging because conventional darkroom based photography will help you in learning about lights, tone, texture and contrast Conventional darkroom based photography is about skill; you need lots of practicing, reflecting, experimenting and exploring. You have to make painful mistake before you can understand what is wrong with your photos and how you should avoid them. With such views, Pure Art 3.5 has not only been a success, but has also, in many ways, reinstated the beauty and artistic integrity of traditional Black & White photography in the digital age of the 21st century. Proud moment for Organising Chairman perhaps, not only for the successful event, but also for his works exhibited. Two young participants at the seminar, despite using digital cameras. 6 Photo Club News Dancing in a Blue Wind: SAFRA Photo Convention Text by CPL (NS) Edmund Low; Photos by CPL (NS) Robin Ng and Mr Tan Kay Hian A week long exhibition displaying 30 of Scott s works. You need to let your imagination run wild to reckon the fishes in the deep sea as to dancing in a blue wind. Philippino Scott Tuason s photographs on marine life indeed captured those magical moments. Like a dancer going through the moves in a deep blue backdrop, marine life has a natural stage awaiting divers to explore. The organising team, with Scott Tuason (white shirt, left) and organising chairman CPL (NS) Edmund Low (white shirt, right). to shoot in a unique controlled environment, filled with an amazing array of fishes that a diver would have to go on many trips before he sees them all. In respond to the increasing number of scuba divers and interest in underwater photography, the theme for the recently concluded biennial SAFRA Photo Convention was on underwater photography. Nikon was the Main Sponsor for the convention and all printing was sponsored by Epson. With the support of the diving community in Singapore, SAFRA Photographic Club hopes to continue giving support to underwater photographers. Over 150 people attended the two half-day seminar held at the National Museum of Singapore. The guest-of-honour was LTC (NS) Gregory Chan, Chairman of the SAFRA Mount Faber Executive Committee. The event was also graced by the Philippine Ambassador, Her Excellency Mrs. Belen A. Fule-Anota Visitors to the museum during the week long exhibition period will also have seen Scott s images from the sea. Thirty of his favorite photos enlarged to poster size by Epson were displayed from 26 Jan 2008 to 3 Feb Two underwater photography workshops were also held at Underwater World Sentosa, where participants get A group of divers at the workshop session. 12 Travel Tales Tashi-Delek Greetings from Tibet Text and Photos by 2SG (NS) Felix Tan There is one Tibetan proverb that states: Who can say with certainty that he will live to see tomorrow? And I sure wasn t going to wait till tomorrow for my once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the glory and wonders of the rooftop of the world. The one year old Qinghai-Tibet railway opens another door to enter Lhasa, besides flying in or on a 4-wheel drive. Be warned, though, of the possible altitude sickness that you might encounter there. After all, this place is the highest city on earth, straddling at slightly more than 3500m above sea level. Nestled amongst the snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas, I was thrilled as I watched my plane descend upon Gonggar Airport in Lhasa. Feeling extremely impatient to start my journey, I burst out of the airport and was greeted by the full blast of the chilly air. The one-hour journey on the newly constructed highway from the airport to the city was smooth. And as I watched the acres and acres of land passed me by, I couldn t help pinching myself to make sure that I wasn t simply dreaming. It is most pertinent to take at least a day to acclimatised in Lhasa before venturing for any sightseeing trips. Taking things slowly, I decided I should try out Tibetan food for a change. It was really quite an acquired taste. Whilst Tibetan food comprises of sausages, yak tongue, steamed buns, dried beef and yak meat; xiapuqing, or minced mutton and beef, butter tea, and barley wine, the only other food selection there were the spicy Sichuanese ma-la dishes. With only such limited selection, it didn t take me long before I was craving for my beefsteak or even a burger. I begin my adventure to Lake Nam-Tso next morning. The van passed through rivers, streams, sprawling green fields dotted with cattle all amidst snow-capped mountains. Climbing to the highest point at 5,600m above sea level, we were pelted by a light hailstorm and at such an altitude I was starting to feel a bit nauseous. After a brief moment to enjoy the sight, the van continued downwards to 4,600m before reaching the Lake. The view there was simply awesome and although I was tired and cold from the journey, the view left me breathless an almost cloudless sky; the chilly air, and the turquoise-coloured lake were just remarkable. 012

Travel Tales Another highlight of my trip was finally having a chance to visit the Potala Palace. It s best to book for the entrance ticket early, as there is a limit to the number of tourists allowed into the palace each day. Besides being blown away by such an architectural wonder, my senses were overwhelmed by the yak butter that was burning away in the enclosed space that I manoeuvring in. In the dimly lit rooms, there laid some monstrous looking statues, together with millions of religious scrolls that date back to the time when Tibetan Buddhism was introduced to this part of the world. Another place to go is the Jokhang Palace located in the heart of the Barkhor Area. It is here that you will get the chance to see pious Tibetans prostrating and praying fervently in front of their deities and the holy sanctum. This place is considered the spiritual center of Tibet, and is the destination of millions of Tibetan pilgrims. Unlike the Potala, Jokhang is more intimate, bustling with worshippers as well as tourists and has less restrictions. Dreping Monastery, the largest monastery in Tibet, is located 8km west of Lhasa on a main road, then 3km north on a steep, unpaved road. This place is really like a maze and at every turn and corner, you can be assured that you will be filled with surprises. The best part of this place is there are few tourists hovering in every room, which allows you to just soak in a meditative sanctity of this monastery. And if you have the time, take a trip down to nearby Sera Monastery, where you might just be able to see monks preparing for the monastic exam by staging mock debates in the ritualistic manner. Do pay a visit to the Dalai Lama s Summer Palace the Norbulingka, which means the Jewel Park. Less gaudy and much more park -like, this place exudes a sense of tranquillity that will calm your nerves after days of temple visiting. I was also quite impressed by the Tibet Museum. Located in the southeast corner of the Norbulingka, the museum houses a rich collection of prehistoric artefacts from around the region as well as Buddha statues in different postures, imperial jade seals, colourful tangkas, and various printed Sanskrit and Tibetan scriptures. For good bargains, go to the Barkhor Area, which consists of a quadrangle of streets that surrounds the Jokhang. This is also the traditional Lhasa s pilgrimage circuit. Combining a sense of deep religiosity and a push-and-shove market economics, this place is both the spiritual heart of Lhasa and is the main commercial district for Tibetans and tourists alike. Besides browsing through the market place for great bargains, do venture around to explore this area and you might just be able to chance upon the Muslim section in this area with a Mosque to boost. After six days in Tibet, I had to bid this place farewell. But the beauty and spirituality of this place have surely left an indelible mark in my memories. It is not easy to say goodbye to a place that I have so longed to come, but depart I must. 013

Travel Tales Cutud Lenten Rites: In the Philippines Text and Photos By CPL (NS) Edmund Low attendance of church and study of the teachings. To condense an annual amount of church attendance and confession of sin into a few days of public pain-bearing, is but a one-sided belief of a bargain with God. Nevertheless, the Cutud Lenten Rites is undeniably a visual spectacle and it should definitely be on your list of world s festivals to visit! I was about to go into a town that has splashes of fresh blood on the walls, where troops of masked men flagellated themselves and penitents toiled along bearing wooden crosses bigger than themselves. To a visitor from the secular world, this is surely religious fanatism at its peak. Throughout the next few days, I was to return to my hotel at the end of each day, splattered with blood from head to toe, as I witnessed the Cutud Lenten Rites in Philippines. The Philippines is Southeast Asia s largest Roman Catholic nation. Every year during the Holy Week, in the area of San Pedro Cutud in the City of San Fernando, many Filipinos will take it as a time for atonement and sacrifice. The penitents will make cuts on their backs with razor blades and whip their wounds to spurt out blood. It is their way to ask for forgiveness of sins committed, to fulfill religious vows or to express gratitude for favours granted. The culmination of this will be the re-enactment of Christ s crucifixion in the street play Via Crucis ( Way of the Cross ) on Good Friday. Locals dressed as Roman centurions will arrest Christ, making him bear a heavy cross and trek 4km to a Golgotha. At noon, a number of penitents will be crucified on the makeshift crosses there, with steel nails driven through their hands and feet. In retrospect of the festival, which is actually contrary to the Catholic Church s teachings, I ponder upon these practices of the penitents. The majority of them are not as consistent in attending weekly church s e r v i c e s. A s a p r i e s t m e n t i o n e d, these people should focus on Catholicism t h r o u g h a faithful and c o n s i s t e n t 014

Photo Essays Old Town of Lijiang Text and Photos by Mr Victor Chick This is a well-preserved city of the ethnic Naxi minority and the rich Dongba culture that survived the strong earthquake that rocked Yunan Province in the 1970s. Located 2400 meter above sea level in the northern plateau of Yunan, it was put in the list of the World Relics by the World Cultural Heritage Commission of the UNESCO in The charming Old Town is now a famous tourist attraction for its traditional ethnic culture and customs, inimitable buildings and the wonderful natural views. By day, it resembles our Chinatown with shops selling cultural handicrafts. By night, it becomes the Clarke Quay where pubs and restaurants rules. This series of pictures focus on the modern nightlife in an ancient Old Town 015

Learn a Trick Composition Text and Photos By Mr Victor Chick Every photographer sees the same subject differently. This is called interpretation. At the same time, a single subject can be viewed from different angles as it shows different moods. This is all about composition, through the watchful eye of the photographer. As Henry Cartier-Bresson wrote, there are two elements in a photograph: the subject and its treatment. A wide angle shot (above) shows the environment while a tighter portrait format (left) picture uses the background and the reflection to create a X-shape back drop for the subject. Framing is the simplest way to beautify the subject. it can also shows the surrounding environment using branches to frame the top (left) is one way. Framing it on a diagonal angle (centre) give a more natural look-through feel. other elements can also be used as the frame (right). 016

Photography Workshop Photo Club News SAFRA Photographic Club conducted a special workshop for personals from the Tengah Air Base, RSAF in September. The workshop covers the basics of digital photography as well as some other aspects of event coverage as these personnel are most likely to be assigned to cover Base activities. Canon Singapore had kindly loaned 10 sets of its latest 400D cameras for the practical shoots. Social Gatherings and Slide Shows SAFRA Photographic Club kept to its tradition of hosting two grand social gatherings for members, friends and partners during the Lantern Festival and Lunar New Year. At the Lantern Festival gathering, Bernard Teo represented the team of photographers from SAFRAPC and Police Photo Club in presenting a slideshow on their trip to Jiling, the frozen north-eastern city of China. Victor Chick s photographic journey to Lijiang, another China city, was shown during the Lunar New Year gathering. No gathering is complete without food, wine and festive specialties, and the chance to meet up with old friends and new acquaintances. 017

User Review Get Real Photography! User review of Nikon D60 It got the look of the D40X. It feels like a D40X. A quick glance at the specs, it is similar to the D40X, almost. But it s the new D60, just announced in Jan. But why do Nikon recreate a new D40X, after improving it form the D40? May be it s not exactly a recreation. Besides the familiar feel and handling, there are some big changes in the D60, for the better, of course. You may regret buying the D40 a bit too early when the improved D40X was released six months later. For the D60, it s an option if you are considering upgrading. A few interesting new features attracted my attention when I got hold of the camera. Text and Photos by Mr Victor Chick two new tiny rectangular windows beneath the viewfinder. It is called the eye senor controlled by the Shooting Info Auto Off setting (by default, it is on). When it detects your face coming close to the viewfinder, it will switch off the monitor display and turn on the display inside the viewfinder. When the face moves away, it reverses the display setting. If the Shooting Info Auto Off setting is set to off, both displays will remain on when the camera s metering is activated. At times, the bright monitor is annoying while you try to compose thru the viewfinder. For me, it can be power saver because the monitor can remain off when the camera is hung close to the body. In the D60, it is no more just anti-dust cleaning. The basic dustoff Imaging Sensor Cleaning function use in cameras like D300 is now a standard in most cameras. New design in the mirror chamber incorporated an airflow control ducts which directs the airflow towards the ducts, drawing any dusts floating within away from the Low-pass filter. Nikon name it the Integrated Dust Reduction System. A few of the new features are worth mentioning here. One of it that I like to play with is the Stop-Motion Movie in the Retouch Menu. It combines a series of pictures, up to 100, to produce an anime type movie effects. Simple take a series of consecutive pictures, and select the first and last frame and the camera will take care of the rest. You can even select the speed by changing the frame rates before saving it into an AVI movie file. Light weight, compact, fewer buttons to made changes to camera controls, just to name a few. The first new feature that really caught my attention is the vertical display of camera setting. As in most new cameras, camera settings are displayed on the back monitor screen. This camera has the display rotated when you hold the camera in the upright position. The only physical difference on the camera body casing is the A new cross screen filter is added to the list of filter effects. Besides intensifying the three primary colors, you can also do some color balance on camera. But do you still need the digital skylight or UV filers when you are supposed to have an optical one in front of the lens to protect it? If you have used the D-lighting to correct your back lighted images, you must try the new Active D-lighting. While D-lighting brightens the shadow areas after the picture is taken, Active D-lighting does the correction before you take the shot. It will brighten shadow areas, and maintaining a balanced highlight area. To summaries in just a few words, the D60 is a camera worth considering. Direct shot (centre) of a backlight scene give harsh highlight and deep shadow. D-lighting brightens the shadow areas and save as a new image (right). With Active D-lighting, a more balanced picture is taken, with details in the highlight and brighter shadow area. 018
