1 CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS Course name: Ecological Photography Course code: PHOT 2100 Total contact hours: 60 hours COURSE DESCRIPTION This course offers general knowledge and skills about the possibilities and stages of digital photography applied to ecological exploration. Through practice exercises and field trips students will apply the information provided in lectures. Students will be able to consciously create and manipulate digital photographic images and explore Costar Rican ecological systems. OBJECTIVES By the end of the course students should: CONTENTS - Have a clear knowledge of the principles of photography. - Have a general knowledge of the applications of photographic film. - Consciously handle a digital photographic camera. - Consciously handle a scanner. - Perform basic manipulations through Adobe Photoshop. - Have a clear knowledge of the computer hardware components affecting digital image manipulation. - Select the correct printing process for any given image. - Control the format and resolution of a digital image according to its function. - Have a basic notion of Ecological systems throughout Costa Rica and important issues in relations to photographic exploration. Basic photographic principles - Diaphragm aperture, shutter speed and image exposure - Properties and applications of photographic film - Optics in photography and depth of field - Light and lighting in photography Digital photographic principles - Image format - Image resolution

2 - Digital image capture Digital camera - Types of digital cameras - Digital camera optics - The correct use of a digital camera Scanner - Flatbed and transparency scanners - Computer interface Computer principles in digital photography manipulation - Types of computers, basic and peripheral hardware - Monitor calibration Manipulation through Adobe Photoshop - Basic software tools - Image mode, size and resolution - Contrast, brightness, levels and curves adjustments - Basic filters - Final retouching for printing or digital publishing Digital image printing - Printer types - Photographic printer paper Ecology - Principles of ecology - Costa Rica and its ecological systems METHODOLOGY The course is theoretical and practical. Lectures will be imparted to present the theoretical aspect of the subjects with visual support and applied practical exercises in the classroom. Students will perform practice exercises to apply the lessons studied in the classroom. On field trips students will create series of images focusing on given aspects of Costar Rican Ecology. REQUIREMENTS Students must have a digital camera and a basic knowledge of Mac Operating System. Field trips

3 Participation in field trips is mandatory. Two day field trips will be on Saturday and Sunday. EVALUATION SYSTEM The course is graded on a basis of 100 with a minimum passing grade of 80/100. Partial projects will only be graded on their due date.
