6 Terminology Information Lm The amount of brightness/light emitted by a light source is measured in Lumens. The symbol for Lumens is lm. lm/w This calculation denotes the amount of lumens emitted per watt of electricity used. Lumens Lumens is the standard by which the amount of brightness / light emitted by a light source is measured. W The rate at which a light bulb converts electrical energy into light and heat is measured in watts the higher the wattage, the more power, or equivalently the more electrical energy is used per unit time. The symbol for WATTS is W. WATTS The watt (abbreviated W) is the International System of Units' (SI) standard unit of power(energy per unit time), the equivalent of one joule per second. The watt is used to specify the rate at which electrical energy is dissipated, or the rate at which electromagnetic energy is radiated, absorbed, or dissipated. CCT relates to the colour of light produced by a light source, and uses the Kelvin temperature measurement scale (SI unit of absolute temperature). It describes the relative colour appearance of a white light source, indicating whether it appears more yellow/gold ("warm") or more blue ("cool"), in terms of the range of available shades of white. Many people are now familiar with the idea of a "warm" white or a "cool" white being offered by fluorescent and other light bulbs. These bulbs have vastly different colour temperatures. The "warm" bulb often has a colour temperature of 3,000K and casts a more orange/red light on objects. Because you normally associate warmth with red or orange objects, this accounts for the "warm" descriptive name, even though it is a cooler (lower) temperature on the Kelvin scale. A "cool" white bulb commonly has a colour temperature of 4,100K and higher on the Kelvin scale. This is in the low range of blue colour, similar to ice, therefore earning the "cool" description.

8 LED or Light Emitting Diode, is an Electronic Semicoductor Device that produces visible light when an electric charge is passed through it. LED's are categorized as Solid State Lighting (SSL) so are Organic Light Emitting Diode's (OLED's) and Light Emitting Polymers (LEP's). LED's by definition are more efficient in converting electricity into light. With advances in technology LED's are now available in bulb & fiture modules hence more adaptable for general lighting applications With global warming no longer being just a myth, LED's with their inherent qualities of low energy consumption, higher lumen capacity and longevity are high in demand both for commercial as well as residential usage. So much so that all major producers have started customizing the LED's for mass and everyday use. The luminous efficacy of LED's has developed to such an etent that replacements for traditional 100 W lamps are easily available. The projection being that in the near future LED's will be replacing most other traditional lighting sources for both Commercial as well as Residential Lighting.
