1 Architectural Digest Analysis of Magazines Selling line The picture on the left is the front cover of an architectural magazine. I recently looked at this magazine as I wanted to gain some form of knowledge of what my magazine could possibly look like. Masthead As you can see, the masthead is located just above the main image and is placed on top of a white background which borders the main image. The title is in serif font and is in the colour black. This then contrasts well on the white background and the target audience can easily see the title and read it with ease. The masthead also reflects the genre of the magazine which is architecture. This is effective as its use of font is sleek and stands out, similar to architectural buildings which typically stand out. Just beneath the actual tile and above the main image is the selling line. This is a short and sharp sentence. This text helps to sell the magazine to the target audience. Main Image The main image is of an outdoor pool accompanied by furniture. It also features some amazing structures. Typically the main image would indicate to the target audience what the main topic is about. Main cover line The main cover line is what hooks the audience and brings them in. On this cover it read The great design issue. The main cover line is fairly big which makes it noticeable to any individual who even looks towards the magazine. It is placed on top of the main image, however it is positioned away from the structures.

2 House style The overall style of front cover magazine synergises perfectly well with the image as well as the text displayed. The colours blue, black and white are used throughout the front cover, the use of colours reflect the professionalism of the magazine and helps to make it look sleek, stylish and eye catching. Double page spread Just below you can see a double page spread which is from the same magazine. Upon first look I realised that the theme doesn t really carry on. However the sleek and stylish aspect of the magazine carries on. One thing that does carry is the use of font and design. For example the font used on the front cover and on the double page spread are both serif. Furthermore, the white border you see on the front cover is also used within the magazine. I feel that it is important to keep the design at a limited level. I believe a successful magazine would keep the theme consistent throughout the magazine. The institution has also used short paragraphs to make sure the target audience do not get bored.

3 The Economist Due to the nature of the magazine I am going to create I feel that it is neccesary, that I take a look at a economical/political magazine. Masthead As you can see, the masthead is located on top of a red rectangle which is placed just underneath it. The title is in serif font and is in the colour white. This then contrasts well on the red background and the target audience can easily see the title and read it with ease. The masthead also reflects the genre of the due to the choice of words. For example Economist. This reflects the type of magazine this is, which is clearly a magazine about the economy and anything that strongly relates to it. Main Image The main image is of the north Korean leader Kim-jong un. This is a very important main image as this individual is known all over the world, especially in the western world, where this magazine is sold. Almost any target audience will instantly recognise him and are more likely to pick up the copy of the magazine. Furthermore, the additional image which is placed behind the ruthless dictator reflects the type of man he is. When putting both of the images together the outcome is a North Korean dictator who is frankly a maniac who thrives on killing and destroying. In doing this the institution reel in more people towards the magazine to possibly buy it. Typically the main image would indicate to the target audience what the main topic is about. Main Cover line The main cover line is placed just above the main image. It is in serif font and in the colour red. The institution have kept the theme of their masthead by using the same type of serif font and colour. The cover line is also in a bold font which help to reinforce its importance. Furthermore it is juxtaposed just above the main image which of Kim Jong un smiling and waving. The word extreme really reinforces the type of person the dictator is. Thus, leading to the target audience establishing the link between the cover line and the main image. House Style In this front cover, there are 3 colours used. Red, black and white. The red and black used in the masthead is perfect as they contrast perfectly, which allows the target audience to identify the

4 magazine a lot easier. The main image the institution synergises with the colours as well, as the individual featured on the magazine is wearing a black and white suit. Main Article Upon close analysis, you can see that the theme of the magazine is being portrayed throught the pages as the colours red,white and black are being used. Unlike he previous magazine I analysed, this magazine has a lot more text. This may be due to the fact that the institution has created this magazine to educate and infrom their target audience, additonally it is a magazine based on the economy, so I would expect a lot of text. Instead of using short paragraphs, this magazine fills its pages with mass amounts of writing.
