3 Luna WEARABLE LIGHT CONTROLLER FOR A RESPONSIVE ENVIRONMENT Luna is a wearable device with touch input that allows the user to adjust the brightness and color temperature of lighting with minimal effort. Luna is designed to track the position of astronauts on the International Space Station, giving them further control of their isolated environment. Our team used a combination of hard and soft materials to tactilely divide Luna s three preset buttons and the stitched linear input.

4 Problem The orbital speed of the ISS removes the astronauts from the regular 24-hour cycles that humans are conditioned for. The station requires completely artificial lighting and currently uses fluorescent lights. These static light conditions and the lack of day vs. night can cause sleep disorders that affect the astronauts mental health, general comfort, and productivity. Research Through literature review, we studied astronaut body positions in microgravity and the neutral body posture. The change in posture activates the thigh region and makes it valuable real estate for interactions. Our own user testing confirmed that the thigh was the preferred placement. We also researched day-to-day astronaut clothing - astronauts all wear cargo pants while aboard the ISS. The goal was to create a device that astronauts could wear without modifying their clothing and habits. 5 Hypothesis Materials A wearable device that allows astronauts to easily control the lighting will improve physical and psychological comfort and increase productivity. The wearability component will give astronauts greater efficiency and simple control of their lighting environment. A toggle button allows the user to switch between adjusting brightness and color temperature. Three preset buttons allow the user to return to their preferred settings. FOAM provides comfort and tactile contrast to the 3D-printed form

8 The Cube FLEXIBLE HUMAN INPUT DEVICE FOR 3D INTERACTIONS The Cube is an input device designed for interactions that go beyond the standard mouse and keyboard. Through spacial gestures and simple inputs, The Cube is a open medium for new interactions with software and hardware. This elegantly simple device was developed during an internship at Autodesk while investigating new painpoints in the Internet of Things product development workflow.

10 External vs Internal The internal circuitry and components were developed as separate bodies. This division allowed me to compress the prototype circuitry as small as possible while eliminating the need for screws or any external hardware. The core is held in magnetically, enabling the sensor and LED rich module to move into different enclosures if necessary. RGB LEDs Touch Sensitive

11 Acutus Lamp A SHARP TAKE ON A SIMPLE DESK LAMP The Acutus lamp perfectly integrates playful customization into a sophisticated form. Using a set of red-green-blue sliders, the user can choose the exact hue or warmth of light they desire. The body is milled from solid walnut and integrates a seamless diffuser that conceals a dense LED array. Embedded circuitry interprets the users input and smoothly controls color output.

12 Fabrication Building Acutus offered me the challenge of creating a device out of natural materials while hiding the driving technology. LED strips were embedded under a thick layer of resin in order to diffuse the light. The base was manually hollowed out using a vertical mill to fit the circuitry.

14 Ari A SMART PROJECTOR FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF INTERACTIVE CONTENT Immersive entertainment and hardware is becoming readily available to the average consumer and enabling rich interactions. Unfortunately content suppled by virtual reality platforms currently isolates the user from the environment around them. Ari allows the content to spill into the users realm and can support multiple user interactions.

15 Objective To design an interactive projector that is so immersive in its user experience that the physical product disappears and the projected content dominates the space. Form Studies My earliest forms were much more aggressive and focused on the motion of the vertical axis. As the shape developed, it became clear that a spherical form would make the most sense to support the two axes of motion. This would also allow the laser projector to complete a full arc, reducing the amount of rotational movement. Ari s form needs to be friendly without distracting the user from the content it is producing. A sphere will allow Ari to move without creating distracting changes in the profile.

16 Use Cases Process I broke down the internals into two distinct circuits. One drives the model s motors and motion while the other drives the lighting and hardware interface. Various proof of concept models and circuits were developed in order to work out any issues. I was able to produce high quality ABS plastic parts using Stratasys 3D printers. Tight tolerances were required to create the spinning column. The top sphere was sourced from a lighting supplier and was cut down to size. Infrared Laser Touch Sensitive The Wand 9 Axis IMU Classroom: Ari enables rich visual interactions with course material. Teachers can leverage Ari s awareness of the room s geometry to engage students in the front and back of the classroom. The entire classroom can now become a canvas for learning. Living Room: Ari allows content to spill into the room unrestricted by conventional screen shapes and sizes. Gaming experiences are unique to the space they are played in. You can go on an adventure with apps like Google Street View, navigating with your wand.

17 Surfaces Ari s simple form made identifying specific surface treatments important. The top sphere was tinted with a translucent paint to allow for internal lighting to pass though. The array of full color LEDs enables Ari to subtly communicate its state. The bottom shell is coated with a rubber finish that adds a subtle texture and grip.

19 Calvin Klein Topographic Maps ELEVATED VISUAL MERCHANDISING FOR CALVIN KLEIN COLLECTION IN NEW YORK While working at New Project in Brooklyn I was given the unique opportunity to layout an organic landscape for two large scale topographic maps. With almost 1,000 pieces coming off the CNC, we had to be extremely organized with the assembly. The final pieces were placed in the front windows of the Calvin Klein Collection flagship store on Madison Ave. in Manhattan.

20 Inspiration New Project was given various samples of inspiration materials ranging from photos to dye samples. The designer at Calvin Klein had ideas of what he liked, but it was up to us to refine his ideas into a producible product. Leadership Even though I was relatively fresh at New Project, the project managers allowed me to take charge of the organization and assembly of the maps. Due to their size and the number of pieces, this project had quickly become one of the most complex projects I have worked on.

22 Process I started by sourcing various landscapes from Google Earth that fit what Calvin Klein was looking for. These were then sculpted and modified using Blender. The meshes were passed to a project manager that sliced up the model and prepared it for the CNC. Each layer was assigned a color and had to be organized by region. Once the waterbased dyes were sprayed on and dry, each layer was glued and stapled, slowly forming the landscape.

24 V-Barrow A COMPACT, MULTI-PURPOSE FOLDING WHEELBARROW Living in the city rarely goes hand-in-hand with having lots of extra space. The V-Barrow was designed as a space-conscience solution that could replace the need for other bulky tools. The V-Frame base allows for flexibility of function in addition to the ability to fold for storage.

25 Grips Process I produced several small scale working models in order to explore how I could create a compact wheelbarrow. I had to consider the folding mechanics while understanding how loads would be distributed. The long axis was chosen to remain rigid in order to preserve the strong geometry created by the two arms. 27 Final Prototype The full scale model was built with rust resistant materials to ensure the frame would last. Large quick release levers and a set of springs clamp the two halves of the body, securing the arms into one of four positions. The long handles are heavily padded and angle in towards the user for an ergonomic grip. Capacity: 250lbs
