1 A Square Quest: Using Photography In Our Outdoor Classroom! The Fredrickson Family Early Education Center California Lutheran University
2 Preface: My photography enthusiast, James, wished to continue our discoveries with classroom cameras and our outdoor classroom shape hunts. This is the sequel to our book, Circle Treasure Hunt. Friends in our classroom caught James excitement and joined in the quest. Some friends were happy to help in the hunt, and some friends asked James for help to take their own photos. The social exchanges and discoveries the children made were rich and a pure delight to observe and encourage as their teacher. The square quest has been a process over several weeks during the months of November & December It became more of a quest, as the children quickly realized it was harder to find squares than finding circles when we had our Circle Treasure Hunt. The children discovered the difference between a square and a rectangle, and became quite selective to ensure the item was a true square. They looked for four equal sides and four corners stopping to count the sides and corners to be sure before taking a photo.
3 Our quest begins Giulietta and James noticed the table in the sand box was square. James took the photo. There was a problem James noticed the entire table did not show up in his photo. Mrs. Trish, it doesn t look like a square.
4 James discovered by standing on the hill, he could capture the entire table in one shot. Luke and Giulietta thought this was a good solution.
5 The end of the balance beam was square. Four corners and four sides!
6 Giulietta asked if she could take a photo. James gave some photography pointers to Giulietta. Giulietta s Photo!
7 James and Giulietta scrolled through the square photos they took the other day. My friends noticed they had not captured the entire square in their shots. They decided to take another photo. Much Better! It was interesting to observe the children reflecting back on photos from previous days, before continuing our quest. Problems were discussed and solved!
8 Mrs. Miriam showed us the landing of the slide was a large square.
9 The bottom of the truck had a square hole!
10 Johnny found three squares, and counted them for us. Giulietta counted too. \\
11 Olivia also helped count the squares. James took a photo of each square One Two Three
12 Once again my friends discovered by moving back they could get all three square fence easels in one photo. James announced, Now I see three squares. Four corners and four sides.
13 The top of the fence posts are squares. Nathan and James made the discovery.
14 Delaney found a square window on our classroom door. James showed her how to use the camera. Delaney s Photo:
15 Giulietta and James continued the square quest, and found a wooden square.
16 James made a discovery: By tilting the camera, the fence diamonds turned into chain-link squares!
17 The gate hinge to the infant outdoor playground was square. James took two photos.
18 ($????!??,????(;, hvghhcsycffdyxfgf gg "Mrs. Trish, I found a square!" James sent me a photo he took at home of the most beautiful square I have ever seen! He sent the text above, and his Mom translated the message for me. James home discovery was a special Christmas square!
19 On another day James decided to try the 35mm film camera to continue our square quest. A patch of grass was square shaped. Malia and Solveij pointed it out to James. (James photo of the square grass patch)
20 A square book was found! Max was very interested in the film camera and listened to James explain how to use the camera. (Photo James took)
21 Max then used his new found skills to photograph a square book they had found. Zooming the lens was the best part!
22 Max found that taking off his cap allowed him to see through the view finder and get the close-up shot he desired! (Photo of Max s close up picture)

24 Our square quest for the day was coming to a close but we found one more square on the way to our classroom door a yellow Lego square!
