1 Teacher s Guide Color! American Photography Transformed All grades Make the most out of your museum visit by using the following activities and guided questions that will help you and your students navigate through this special exhibition. Based on the Shelby County Schools Visual Arts and Social Sciences Pacing Skills (Third and quarter). About the Exhibit Photography today means color. This exhibition tells the tale of how we got to this state and of the decisive change that color has brought. When color photography became commercially viable in the early twentieth century, photographers were delighted. Color was something they had been seeking from the medium s beginnings. Yet artists quickly realized that color photographs needed to mirror human sight to be acceptable. In short, color seemed to limit creative possibility, causing many to reject it. Even so, photographers remained intrigued, and for decades thereafter a surprising number of them created a diverse range of engaging color images. Museum Visit Objective Students will experience firsthand the history, interpretation, and inspiration that comes from a single piece of artwork. Students will also gain a better appreciation and understanding of color photography, a medium that is taken for granted now. Before your museum visit Kindergarten 2 nd Grade: Talk about color and how each color makes us feel. To expand the discussion, talk about how colors are represented in our society. Red is used for emergency vehicles, and as a sign to stop. Red gets our attention. How are other colors used? Then ask how they would feel if everything they saw in the world was black and white. For a special activity, make Xerox copies of color photographs and hand the copies out to the class. Have the students color the black and white pictures with colored pencils, china markers, or oil pastels. 3 rd 5 th Grade: Make view finders out of black construction paper. Use it around the school to find compositions. Tell the students to find interesting things to take pictures of through their view finder. Sometimes the most mundane thing looks interesting through the camera lens, especially when close ups abstract the composition. For an extra activity, set the view finders on top of large pictures from either a book or magazine. When an interesting abstract composition shows up, place tracing paper and between the view finder and the image and trace. Later, this sketch can be translated into an abstract color study painting. Middle and High School Grades: Look at photographs in any book or magazine. Cut out or select photographs with their favorite color, composition, and subject matter. If they have their own cameras and pictures they have taken or posted on instagram or facebook, encourage them to them to a school address so they can be printed for class, or they can print them at home. Have the students write a few sentences about why they are interested in the photograph by referring to the color, composition, and subject matter. At the Museum Kindergarten 2 nd Grade: Go on a color scavenger hunt. Break the group into color teams. Each team needs to find their color in as many pictures as possible. Once the class has moved through the whole gallery, everyone must report back to see who found the most color. Students can take special note on which photograph had the most of their color represented, and the group can visit these pictures together.

2 3 rd 5 th Grade: Be sure to bring the view finders to the museum. While looking through the museum, look for abstract and figurative photographs. Find 2 pictures to compare and contrast. How is the abstract one different from the figurative one? How are they the same? Is the abstract out of focus? A close up? Allow the students to wonder the galleries in search of a figurative photograph. They can use their view finders to look for a way to crop that picture into an interesting abstract picture. Middle and High School Grades: (For this activity, students will need paper, a hard surface such as a sketchbook or clip board, pencils and colored pencils. These items can be provided to you by the museum if requested 1 week in advance.) Walk the students through the show and let them select their favorite image. Ask them to answer the same 3 questions as they did in class; why do you like the color, composition, and/or subject matter? Then, have them make a color gradient on the same piece of paper to show the range of color. If a student is looking at an old black and white color tinted photograph, they can first color a grey shade before coloring, so that they can get the right tonal effect. The students will gain an appreciation for the more vibrant colors in later photographs compared to the graytoned colors of the 19th century. After the Museum Visit Kindergarten 2 nd Grade: Students can photograph monochromatic still lives. Divide the students into the same teams they had at the museum. Have students collect their items of their team color, (i.e. the orange team can bring in oranges, an orange table cloth, an orange hot wheels car, etc.) from around their house or classroom. Arrange them in a still life and photograph them using a few interesting viewpoints with your phone or school camera or disposable camera. Students can also paint or color the arrangement as a monochromatic study. 3 rd 5 th Grade: Purchase a sun print package from an art supply store. Buy enough so that every student can have 2 3 pages. If you haven t used sun print paper before, rest assured the packet will have instructions. Let your class collect small items from around the classroom, outside, or from home to use on their sun print paper. They will arrange their own composition. They can follow guidelines such as asymmetrical, symmetrical, radial, etc to make it more challenging. The entire process of sunprinting is helpful for the student to understand the most basic form of photography involving light exposure, positive/negative, composition, and stop baths. Middle and High School Grades: Send a letter home for shoe box donations. Students can spend a few weeks making their shoe box camera. Have them focus on subject matter and composition, just as they did at the museum and in the classroom before. Make a few prints so that some can be colored or tinted.
