2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF DURALEX PAINTS THE COMPANY NAME Some people wrongly assume that the name Duralex is used in a endeavour to imitate the name Dulux. When Duralex was formed in 1946, Dulux was trading under the name of B.A.L.M. Paints - not Dulux. Duralex was derived from the word Durable. Duralex might be new to some people, but in fact it has been operating since The saying Jack of all trades and master of none shaped the company s policy. For that reason, the fledgling, new and yet undeveloped field of water based paints was chosen. In those days almost every surface coating contained organic solvents of some kind, white lead and red lead were the norm, and Duralex figured there had to be a better way. The company s determination to specialise has certainly paid off, for it is now a prosperous private company and achieving a number of industry firsts along the way. Two years after Duralex was formed, it was forging ahead in the water-based paints field to develop and market a completely washable and scrubbable interior/exterior all weather waterbased product, RESIN TONE. It was popular and the only completely brush-clog free paint of its type on the market. Yes, Duralex discovered the secret of emulsifying resin in water so that it did not clog brushes. Its durability on exteriors exceeded 14 years. In the 1950 s most walls due for repainting, inside and outside, were badly chalked, either from old, decomposed water paints or calcimine. Duralex saw the need for an effective surface binder and was the first company to bring out a water-based binder for interior/exterior use. It was called KALSO SEAL, and sold in hundreds of thousands of gallons for peeling ceilings and walls. This caused quite a stir in the paint trade. The Kalso-Seal product filled a real and vital need and became extremely successful. Surface binders are still with us today. Volume sales are, of course, no longer there as calcimine and powdery water paints are virtually gone. (A current updated version of Kalso Seal is Duralex SURFACE BINDER). In 1957 Duralex launched another first - this time a WORLD FIRST - a water based sealer undercoat which could be applied directly over tar, bitumen and smoke stains and not bleed through, called BLEED SEAL. Bleed Seal is still very popular and very highly esteemed, even by Duralex competitors. It fills a real need in repainting smoke damaged buildings after a fire. It was three years later in 1960 that Duralex introduced a product that was to have a GIGANTIC impact not only in Australia but in the rest of the world: the first GLOSS ACRYLIC PAINT. This world first developed after many years of research by Duralex, was confirmed as a world breakthrough by such bodies as the Society of British Paint Manufacturers, the National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association, Washington USA, and the Canadian Paint and Lacquer Association. It goes without saying that acrylic paints are here to stay. The reputation of Duralex is first-rate and at its nucleus is the fulfilled hopes and dreams of Duralex now offer the BEST QUALITY at AFFORDABLE prices. 6 STAIN RESISTANT WALL PAINTS We spent thousands of dollars to have a Sydney University test Duralex Everclean against all opposition stain resisting wall paints to determine which product is the best. The university purchased the paint from random stores, so that the test could not be doctored. The stains used were:- Red ink Blue food dye Hot black coffee Beetroot juice Poster paint Water based texta Red wine 1. The staining liquid was applied and allowed to dry for an entire hour on the test panels laying flat. 2. Warm water and Ajax Spray n wipe were then used to rinse the stains off the test panels. 3. 8 NON-STICK RESISTANCE TESTS CONDUCTED IN ACCORDANCE TO: Australian Standard AS The test is designed to simulate the painting of windows through summer. When painted, windows are usually allowed to remain open overnight to dry before closing the following night. This ensures sufficient time is allowed for drying and to prevent the sliding window from sticking to the window frame. The test itself involves priming and gloss top coating two pieces of 4cm wide timber panels and allowing to dry overnight at room temperature. The timber panels are placed face to face and lying flat, so the painted surfaces are in direct contact. A weight of 1kg is placed directly over the test area. The testing material is placed into a pre-heated chamber for 60 minutes set to 50ºC. The test panels are then removed and allowed to cool. A moderate twisting force is applied to separate the panels and examined for any paint surface damage and deformation. 12 Did You Know... In January 1997 our N.A.T.A. approved lab placed a bare timber panel coated with 3 coats of Sun Master gloss on our roof exposure rack. By design exposure racks face due North and test panels are sloped at 45, which has a multiplying effect on actual weathering so that one year approximates 1½ to 2 years on a wall. *Sun Master after 10 years roof exposure (which equals 15 years wall exposure) and still going. *3 coat alkyd system after 5 years roof exposure (note timber decay). 14 PRIME KNOWLEDGE ON Aquestion often asked is what is better for unpainted timber, oil based primer or Acrylic primer? Some people believe there is nothing better for previously unpainted timber than oil based pink primer followed by an oil based undercoat. The reasoning is that the oil feeds or impregnates the timber cells, to provide the required degree of surface protection and stability, making the finishing coats last longer. Good thinking and true for a short while only. You see, oil based (actually alkyd) Pink Primer and oil based undercoats dry by an oxidising process, which means they must react with oxygen from the atmosphere to dry. The reaction with oxygen continues on during the entire lifetime of the primer and undercoat causing progressive and terminal embrittlement. Cracking and peeling is the final outcome. The oil which once fed the timber has now lost it s flexibility, become hard and brittle, unable to cope with the normal movement in the wood it once preserved _ especially along the grain. ACRYLIC THE NEW TECHNOLOGY. PRIMER All Acrylics are not the same. Unfortunately to confuse the issue beyond commonsense and understanding, the word acrylic has now become a generic term meaning anything water based. An acrylic primer may not have the necessary type or grade of acrylic emulsion to fulfil requirements. Some tradesmen have used acrylic primers (actually primer-undercoats) but with disappointing results and understandably have shied off using them again. Negative but well meaning information is spread which is a pity. It is a pity because durability of a painted timber surface can virtually be DOUBLED by the use of a properly formulated 100% acrylic primer-undercoat. Exposure tests show that a properly formulated product does not embrittle on ageing and is ideally capable of coping with normal movement in wood. The problem of tannin bleed which becomes evident when painting a water based product over certain timbers, eg cedar, has been overcome by Duralex technicians, thus removing the last problem barrier. It is by far much more mould/mildew resistant than oil based products as it offers less nutrients to such degradation. Correct Acrylic emulsion used in its manufacture not only offers extra longevity, but because of its very high chemical resistance, can be applied directly to galvanised iron, all non-ferrous metals and masonry _ A truly Multi-Purpose PRIMER-Undercoat. It can be recoated or overcoated in approximately 2 hours instead of overnight and if an oil undercoat is used, then double that length of time. It consistently gives superior enamel holdout, yielding higher gloss for alkyd based gloss finishes.
