1 Intergrain Natural Stain on New Timber [Exterior] NZ_SW09224 Description Intergrain NaturalStain is a high performance, semi transparent, water based stain to transform the colour of exterior timber whilst protecting it from the destructive forces of nature. Available in a range of base colours that can be tinted to achieve a wide colour palette, NaturalStain delivers a vast range of timber colour options to cater for individual designs or to present treated pine as another timber species. NaturalStain is extremely durable and withstands wear on timber decking without the need for a top-coat. With additives for resistance to UV, water and mould, NaturalStain is more durable and lasts longer than traditional oil based stains. 2 Substrate And Substrate Preparation Substrate Notes: This is a generic timber substrate. The following timber substrates are excluded: tannin rich timbers (such as cedar), bamboo. Other specialty timbers may also not be covered by this substrate. NEW TIMBER New timber items should be delivered in a clean dry condition, just prior to installation. The timber should be inspected for physical defects, such as splinters, cracks, woolly grain, machine marks, and knot holes and also for other defects such as sap and tannin stains, and resin exudation from knots. Examine surfaces for wax or preservatives. Moisture content should be close to equilibrium moisture content, usually 14-18% for satisfactory staining or coating. Timber should be stored out of the weather before painting. Timber left exposed to the weather for as little as one month prior to painting will suffer from reduced paint adhesion and durability, although weathering might be required for some woodcare products. PREPRIMED TIMBER Factory primed timber should be delivered in a clean dry condition, just prior to installation. The timber should be inspected for physical defects, such as splinters, cracks, woolly grain, machine marks, and knot holes and also for other defects such as sap and tannin stains, and resin exudation from knots. Machine coat or factory applied primers are suitable for transport and temporary exposure during construction, however, all pre primed timber should be inspected for chalking, crazing, flaking and peeling, and an adhesion test should be carried out. It is necessary to lightly sand factory primers to remove loose coatings and achieve an adequate profile for top coating. Always ensure saw cuts or exposed timber is primed prior to fixing. MANUFACTURED BOARD Manufactured board includes Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF), chipboard, plywood, marine plywood and veneer. These products are manufactured as smooth sheets consisting of wood fibres or thin sheets of wood veneer, bound with either natural lignin or a small percentage of phenolic resin. Manufactured board is widely used as interior panelling but is vulnerable to moisture and therefore not suitable for exterior exposure or in high condensation conditions (unless designed for those areas). Repairing damaged hardboard is not generally practicable and it is advisable to completely replace any damaged sections. They may contain wax, which may inhibit the drying of solvent based alkyd enamels, and tannins, which may bleed through non tannin-blocking coatings. Manufactured board provides a smooth surface ideal for finishing, but may show fibre raise when primed (removed with very light sanding) and the machined edges are more porous. ROUGH SAWN TIMBER Rough sawn timber is literally 'rough'. Rough sawn timber is popular because it's generally less expensive than other timbers. Rough sawn timber is produced at any saw mill, but instead of being planed, finished etc. the wood is left as it is. Due to the higher surface area a lower spread rate may be required. Substrate Preparation Notes: ASSESS SUITABILITY Ensure the wood is thoroughly clean and dry before commencing. Moisture content should be close to equilibrium moisture content, usually 14-18% for satisfactory staining or coating. REMOVE SURFACE CONTAMINANTS Examine the surface for the presence of sap, grease, oil, wax, tannin, building marks, or other contaminants. Clean to remove all dirt, dust, mould and all other surface contaminants by using Dulux Prep Wash and rinse off with clean water. Scrape off any sap or gum exudations and then treat these areas by solvent cleaning with either Mineral Turps or Methylated Spirits, before priming. Use scraper to remove dirt and mortar splashes. Any greyed wood fibres on aged timbers need to be removed by sanding and/or suitable chemical wood cleaner (such as Intergrain Reviva or Cabot s Deck Clean). REPAIR SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS Fill nail holes, cracks and other defects with Selleys Permafilla or Rapidfilla and allow to dry thoroughly. These are both ready-to-use rigid fillers. SANDING Sand the timber with sandpaper in the direction of the grain, along the full length of the board. Round off all sharp edges in order to achieve an even film build and uniform paint coverage. Ensure all sanding dust is removed prior to continuing. NOTE: Be extremely careful with the fine sanding as the veneer is usually very thin. PRIME Prime any bare areas with a suitable primer, or use a self-priming paint. ADDITIONAL NOTES: For Chipboard, MDF sheets, ideally both sides and all edges should be primed to avoid possible distortion of the chipboard. LOSP Treated Timber Leave 5 7 days before using an oil based primer and days before using an acrylic primer. Wash the timber with Cabot's Deck Clean to label instructions and make sure it is thoroughly dry before coating timber. Carry out a water bead test on the timber, as some LOSP treatments may include a water repellent. Some Manufactured timbers may contain wax, and these may cause cissing with water based products and slow drying problems with oil based products. Due to the higher surface area, rough sawn timber may require a lower spread rate Version 2.0 of Woodcare specification NZ_SW09224 approved on Monday, 12 September :47:23 PM (UTC) Page 2 of 7

Apply Reviva mixture generously to the timber with a stiff bristle brush, broom or scouring pad. Scrub the timber vigorously. Clean complete sections at one time. Spot cleaning should be avoided to prevent patchy results. Leave mixture on the timber for minutes. If necessary, apply more mixture to keep timber damp throughout this period. For best results Reviva should be applied to cool surfaces, out of direct sunlight, to avoid the cleaner drying on the timber. Rinse off exterior surfaces thoroughly using maximum pressure from a garden hose or using a high pressure water cleaner. A high pressure water cleaner is recommended for large areas or badly discoloured timber. Interior surfaces must be rinsed clean with sponge and water. NOTE: Failure to thoroughly remove mixture may result in timber discolouration under clear finishes. Allow timber to dry thoroughly before applying further products. Note: After cleaning, some timber species will appear bleached due to loss of water soluble extractives. Richer colour is generally restored on application of the finish. 1 litre concentrate diluted with 4 litres of water covers 5-10 m2. Reviva can assist in the removal of timber stains, paints and oils but is not designed to remove paint or other timber coatings that are in sound condition. For removal of coatings back to a bare surface, sanding is recommended. Badly weathered timber should be sanded back to a fresh surface before applying Reviva. 4 Coat Type: 2nd Coat Datasheet: NZDW1062 Intergrain Natural Stain Air Spray Brush Pad Theoretical Spread Rate * 9 Wet Film Per Coat (microns) 111 Dry Film Per Coat (microns) 35 Recoat Time ** 2 Hours Indefinite Brush, Spray or Applicator Pad SPREADING RATES Rough Sawn Timber: 6-8 m2/l Sawn Timber: 8-10 m2/l Dressed Timber: m2/l The first coat on porous or rough sawn timbers will penetrate further and require more stain than the second coat. Allow a minimum of 4 hours drying before coating with UltraClear Note: Timber colour and species will influence the final appearance of semi-transparent stains. Test on a small area or off cut for colour suitability before use. Do not apply by roller. Stir thoroughly before and during use with a flat blade stirrer. Do not thin. If project requires more than one can of stain, mix cans together in one large container to achieve colour uniformity. Apply TWO coats of NaturalStain taking care to apply sufficient product to edges and end grain. THREE coats will be required in extreme conditions such as full sun exposure, around pools and in humid areas, and may be required on porous timbers. Apply with a quality synthetic or pure bristle brush, pad applicator or spray (HVLP or airless). If spraying, back bush immediately after each section is coated to ensure a uniform finish. Do not overspread or apply thinly as insufficient film thickness will result in lap marks, and compromise performance and durability. One coat is normally sufficient for interior timber. A second coat would only be required to achieve greater depth of colour and greater protection. For a gloss or satin finish, and added protection, overcoat with UltraClear Interior. When staining large areas, such as decking and weatherboards, stain no more than three boards at a time. Complete an entire length or continue until a natural break such as a window occurs. If necessary, sand lightly between coats to remove any raised grain. MAINTENANCE Conduct routine 12 monthly maintenance inspections. Best protection of the timber and ease of maintenance is ensured if NaturalStain is recoated before deterioration of the coating and timber underneath occurs. First indications of the need for recoating will be observed as patchiness or discolouration on edges and areas where insufficient product has been applied. If small areas of timber have weathered through to cause deterioration of the coating, clean area thoroughly with Intergrain Reviva, sand and recoat as for bare timber. For large weathered areas, remove existing NaturalStain coating back to bare timber. This can be done with power washing, or sanding. Coat as for bare timber. To recoat NaturalStain which is in good condition, simply clean the surface with Intergrain Reviva and apply one coat of NaturalStain. NaturalStain is also appropriate for use on interior exposed beams, window frames and skirting boards and can be overcoated with Intergrain UltraClear Interior Gloss or Satin. One coat is normally sufficient for interior timber. A second coat would only be required to achieve greater depth of colour and greater protection. For a Gloss or Satin finish for interior applications overcoat with UltraClear Interior. Note: UltraClear is not suitable for coating areas subject to foot traffic. For hardwearing interior areas overcoat with INTERGRAIN Ultrafloor. Additional Any timber supplied to site uncoated should be coated prior to installation on all faces, edges and end grain prior to installation. Note that all exposed end grain should be coated with all coats of the coating system. Hidden end grain may require two coats to fully seal end. Failure to fully seal the end grain can result in tannin staining. Version 2.0 of Woodcare specification NZ_SW09224 approved on Monday, 12 September :47:23 PM (UTC) Page 4 of 7
