3 Arts in Community Spaces The Cultural Arts Division strives to enrich the quality of life of the community through providing art in community spaces. We embrace our responsibility to expand the public experience with visual art through the natural and architectural landscape of the community. We look forward to continuing to bring art out of the gallery and to the people.

4 Beyond Limbs and Leaves Idea Parks and Forestry Superintendent Steve Cothrel, inspired by a visit to the Enchanted Forest in Maggie Daley Park in Chicago, sent me this photo with an idea to do something similar with Ash in UA.

5 Beyond Limbs and Leaves Project background In an effort to remember the Ash trees felled by the Emerald Ash Borer in Ohio, the City of Upper Arlington invited artists around Ohio to create a piece or two showcasing the characteristics of ash wood for an exhibit in our Concourse Gallery. We started with ash trees from Upper Arlington and contacted local artists to create something that would last far beyond ash trees in our community.

6 Beyond Limbs and Leaves Timeline Invitation in 2012 to local artists, learning many of them were members of a group of wood turners, inviting them to create a piece or two of their choosing that would showcase the characteristics of the ash wood giving our felled Ash trees a new life. We asked them to specify what size of wood and what portion of the tree they were interested in i.e. burls, crotches or other preferences so we could save a piece. The finished work would need to be ready for exhibit in August of Typically hard woods take 3 years to cure.

9 Outside the Box Project background All over the world artists and neighborhoods have been wrapping utility boxes in an effort to reduce graffiti and beautify their communities. Encourage projects that contribute to the quality of the public realm. Support public art initiatives to enhance the community, that come from the community and that have strong community support. Involve, support, respect and encourage artists. Comply with all codes and statutes. Ensure public safety.

10 Outside the Box Idea City-owned utility boxes. Utility boxes that are not scheduled to be replaced in the near future or that are not in areas scheduled to be reconstructed within the timeline. Design will fit with the overall aesthetic of the City of Upper Arlington. This project is not intended to support advertising or community signage, no other text may be inserted into the design by the artist. Designs do not mimic traffic control devices or street signage.

11 Outside the Box Timeline UA artists invited in February Applications received by April 28, 2017 Juried May 15 Art created and submitted for production in June Clings installed in July. Final designs printed 36 x 36 Artists own the copyrights to their images. Federal copyright law provides rights to artists related to the use of images they create. In August, we featured an exhibition in the Arlington Hall Gallery of the original artwork and hosted a reception for the artists to meet the sponsor and each other.
