3 Clarendon Fine Art is delighted to present new works from distinguished British colourist Jeffrey Pratt. It is rare nowadays that we come face to face with the natural world in all its splendour. We seem to live instead in an unnatural world of concrete and artifice, where people are replaced by automated responses, where even our own identities can be stolen, where everything we see and hear is mediated by technology. It is small wonder therefore that we lose touch with reality, with the authenticity, integrity, and undiminished worth of the real world; the one you can see with your own eyes, hear with your own ears, touch, taste, smell, in short, fully inhabit. This is why I choose to paint as I do; to be outside, at one with nature, in the landscape rather than viewing it through a lens or on a screen - and this is why I have remained passionately loyal to plein air painting. I hope the consequent honesty of the work communicates itself to others. I enjoy the thought that people trust my eyes, that they can sense the inherent truth and can be confident that I have identified each and every brush stroke to paint a faithful précis of all those subtle hues and tones that my eye can identify, but only in that very moment, on that day, in that hour, as that particular cloud is speeding by. Here. Now. Real.
4 Before proceeding to paint I prepare a very large palette for several hours; yet while this could be a frustrating delay, I actually find it to be a vital meditative element. The spring is being coiled more and more tightly until it is finally unleashed! By this point I am so ready to paint, to capture the mood, the moment, the spirit of the landscape. The actual painting process can be difficult to explain. It is perhaps best described as a combination of elements working creatively together. To me it feels almost like a divine union between the trinity of hand, eye and nature; first studied, then perceived and finally translated. Therefore on the dullest of days, even the subdued greys and browns we see in nature are pure joy.

24 Despite his humour and charm, Jeffrey Pratt is the quintessential reticent Englishman. So when a collector recently told him that his work had helped her through a hugely difficult time in her life, he was touched and perhaps a little overwhelmed. Yet in the world of contemporary fine art, he is indeed a remarkable voice, uniquely expressive, tirelessly authentic and passionate.

45 Painting en plein air out on location is the quintessential element of Jeffrey s creative process allowing him to get to the heart of a scene in a way that he believes would be impossible in a studio. Working directly from life means that he paints his own interpretation of his own experience, which guarantees immediacy and authenticity. I admire the Scottish Colourists for their sensuous brush work, Les Fauves for their vibrant, often unexpected palettes, Patrick Heron s big bold blocks of colour, but most of all, the great Ivon Hitchens for his subtle tones recorded directly from life and represented in clean broad abstract bush work.

His courageous, almost reckless brushwork, instinctive colourist vocabulary and fearlessness, brings drama to every painting. The technical discipline and ability to recognise and portray subtle differences in tone renders each painting a masterpiece. Ultimately, he sincerely believes the paintings should speak for themselves.
