1 Leonardo Da Vinci Portfolio Tuesday, October 16, :59 PM As an Artist The painting Madonna of the Yarn Winder is not as famous as any other of Leonardo Da Vinci. This painting has a lot of depth and detail in it like any other of his work, the colors in the painting is very neutral and simple, there are a lot of shading which creates the dimension of the whole painting. In this painting, it's Virgin Mary holding the Christ child with the yarn winder. You can also see that Virgin Mary is looking at the Christ child which is likely to be playing with the yarn winder. This painting was stolen in 2003 by two thefts who disguised as tourists. Then the painting was recovered in I chose this painting because it's not so famous and mysterious, also because of it's own beauty of the techniques and skills that can be seen in this painting. Madonna of the yarn winder and yarnwinder.html There are two versions of the painting Virgin of the Rocks, but this is the version that's in Louvre, France. Leonardo Da Vinci spent 3 years working on this artwork, it was from 1483 to In this painting, there's John on the left, Madonna in the center and on the right is John with angel Uriel. The color contrast in this painting is quite dark, there are lots of shading and dimension, the portion of Madonna, John, Jesus and angel Uriel is very realistic. There are also lots of detail in this painting, which make the painting understandable. I chose this piece of art because of it's fascinating beauty and how it has two versions. This painting shows a lot of amazing techniques and skills that Leonardo Da Vinci has. renaissance art.com/virgin of the Rocks.html Virgin of the Rocks Hum08 - Renaissance - Biography Task - Chi Nguyen Page 1

2 The painting St John in the Wilderness is a quite famous painting that's painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. In this painting, John is sitting in the wilderness crossed leg with a staaf on his left arm, and with his left hand, he points at heaven. On his left hand he's holding grapes, this might have something to do with his later on life, when he become Bacchus, the god of wine. There are not of colors in this painting, the colors are also very neutral and simple. Shading is used a lot in this paint to create dimension of the background and where he is. There are also lots of details in this painting, you can see the texture on the rocks that's created by lots of detail. I chose this painting because it's beautiful and it s very clever the way that the things that surround him is either not clear or very dark. In that way, he stands out in the painting. St.John in the Wilderness Bacchus da vinci/gallery english/pages/01 _St_John_in_the_Wilderness_Bacchus.htm As a scientist This is a picture of Leonardo Da Vinci study about the arm. This was by ink pen and on paper. There are 5 sketches of the arm of the human body, and there writing under the sketches that show his study about it. The sketches was drawn in a bone formulae, it's very detailed with all the shading and strokes of his ink pen. It's really amazing how he could know all these things at that time so detailed, some of the sketches are very close to what we acknowledge in today society. I chose this because it's very fascinating to see how he could know so much at that time and how amazing the sketches are sketched out with such details. da vinci biography.com/leonardo davinci anatomy.html da vinci/gallery english/pages/13_arm.htm Science atanomy studies of arm This is a sketch of a skull that was drawn by Leonardo Da Vinci during his study of the Anatomy of the human body. As you can see in the sketch, it's very precise and close to what we know today about the skull of human. There are lots of shading which shows the dimension of this skull, there are also lots of detail in this sketch. I chose this study of the skull because it's very important for today's technology. da vinci/gallery english/pages/14_skull.htm Science atanomy skull These are sketches of the fetus inside the female's body growing into a Hum08 - Renaissance - Biography Task - Chi Nguyen Page 2

3 p// j / /g y g /p g / _ Science atanomy skull These are sketches of the fetus inside the female's body, growing into a baby. Leonardo Da Vinci was the first scientist to study about this, in his time it wasn't heard about. There are 4 sketches of a fetus inside this picture, the fetus is in a position that's curled into a ball like form. In the first 2 sketches, you can see a cord that's connected to him, that's what we know today, this shows that Leonardo Da Vinci is way ahead from his society at that time. The sketches are realistic and has lots of shading which creates dimension. I chose study of him because it's how everybody was once and it's also amazing how he could know all these amazing things that he discovered. da vinci/gallery english/pages/16_fetus_01.htm Science anatomy fetus As an inventor This the famous armored car that was invented by Leonardo Da Vinci. He created this sketch in the year This armored car is a huge platform used to defeat the enemy. There are canons in every direction, on top there's a big protective shell that protects the people inside. The sketch has lots of detail and depth, it also look very realistic. I chose this invention because it's very high tech and we have this idea of the armored car today and it's called a tank. vinci inventions.com/armoured car.aspx Armored car of Leonardo DaVinci/Armoured Car.htm The Automatic igniting device is known today as a gun. This a not so famous invention of Leonardo Da Vinci. In the sketch, there are lots of detail showing different part of this machine, it also look very realistic. I chose this invention because it's well known today in it's upgraded form. of Leonardo DaVinci/Automatic Igniting Device.htm Automatic igniting device h h b l d h f d Hum08 - Renaissance - Biography Task - Chi Nguyen Page 3

4 of Leonardo DaVinci/Automatic Igniting Device.htm Automatic igniting device The eight barreled machine gun is an interesting invention of Leonardo Da Vinci. This was sketched in 1481, this invention was for the purpose of war. This is also to prevent the slowness rate of fire. The sketch is very realistic, has lots of details and shading. I chose this invention because at the time of Leonardo Da Vinci, there are lots of battle are going on that time. So the eight gun barreled represent a lot about that time. It's very creative and cool. renaissance art.com/da Vinci weapons.html of Leonardo DaVinci/Eight Barrelled Machine Gun.htm Eight barrelled machine gun` Dear the Court of Francis the III, I'm know a lot about Leonardo Da Vinci, he's one of my very good friend. I can tell you how amazing he is. Leonardo Da Vinci is a risk taker, he make want to try things that nobody had tried before. He take risks of failing and hates. His inventions for example, it's something that's very different and he know that not everyone will agree with him. Another example is his anatomy research, he risked people's life just to look at the parts of the body. Leonardo Da Vinci is also a inquirer. As person that's working for a patron, he need to do what the patron tells him to do. His painting for example, he will have to paint something that's required by the patron. Like the painting of Lady and with an Ermine, his job is to draw the woman holding the ermine. Leonardo Da Vinci is a thinker, he has to think when he paint, sculpt something, discover something or invent something. He has to think a lot about what to do. Painting is an example, when he is painting, he need to think about what he's doing and what color he's going to use for that artwork. Leonardo Da Vinci is also reflective, he use what he learnt throughout his life time and apply it to his work. For example, his inventions are mostly made up of the things that he already know. So reflects and uses the knowledge that he has and make something new. I think that Leonardo Da Vinci should join the French Court. He is a wise man and is very suitable for the job.
