JOHN WATERHOUSE A PLACE YOU KNOW A PLACE YOU KNOW JOHN WATERHOUSE JOHN WATERHOUSE A Place You Know To look into a painting by John Waterhouse is to enter a world of peace and contemplative beauty. His atmospheric images conjure a world of wide skies, distant horizons, and man and nature in perfect harmony. As one company director told us at a recent exhibition, I have two paintings by John Waterhouse in my office and they are a genuine calming influence in the midst of often chaotic days! So what is it about John s work that makes it such a positive force for calm? A DAY TO DAYDREAM Paper on Board Size 28 x 25 Framed 795
JOHN WATERHOUSE A PLACE YOU KNOW A PLACE YOU KNOW JOHN WATERHOUSE The answer perhaps lies in his attitude and approach to his work. For him each individual painting begins in a moment of reflection and takes him on an emotional journey into his imagination and beyond. The winding paths and distant figures draw us into each enticing scene and invite us to share John s vision and making it our own. This mesmerising new collection reminds us of the visual impact of the world we live in - if we only took the time to look closely. For John, landscape painting is a deeply personal venture. He says: When people look at my paintings they are looking inside me. Through painting I can convey my emotions much more directly to the viewer which to me is what art and painting is all about. I feel that a painting is as much about the artist as it is about the subject matter. My work is continually evolving and I hope will always do so, constantly exploring and pushing the boundaries; making the viewer look deep inside themselves is my driving force. All landscapes ask the same question in the same whisper. I am watching you - are you watching yourself in me? 5 JOHN WATERHOUSE A PLACE YOU KNOW A PLACE YOU KNOW JOHN WATERHOUSE THE TIME OF OUR LIVES Paper on Board Size 16 x 16 Framed 365 ENCHANTED DAY Paper on Board Size 16 x 16 Framed 365 Enjoyment of the landscape is a thrill. David Hockney In western art, the term landscape comes from the Dutch word landschap which translates literally as a patch of ground. This humble phrase has come to describe one of the greatest and best loved genres in the whole of art history, embracing artists as diverse as Rubens, Monet, and David Hockney. The appreciation of nature for its own sake, and its choice as a specific subject for art, is a relatively recent phenomenon. Until the 1600s, landscape was confined to the background of portraits or paintings dealing principally with religious, mythological or historical subjects. In the late 17th century however, artists began to paint scenes for their own value, either representing a real place or an imaginary or idealised scene, and landscape painting as we know it was born. The 19th century saw a remarkable explosion of naturalistic landscape painting, partly driven by the increasing alienation of many people from nature by growing industrialisation and urbanisation. Britain produced two outstanding contributors to this phenomenon in John Constable and J.M.W. Turner and the place of landscape painting in this country was assured.
JOHN WATERHOUSE A PLACE YOU KNOW A PLACE YOU KNOW JOHN WATERHOUSE NEW BOOK We are delighted to announce the publication of this long-awaited book which represents a landmark moment in John s career, reflecting his outstanding status as one of the country s foremost landscape artists. A Place you Know is a lavishly illustrated tribute to John s life and work, and offers a fascinating insight into his inspiration through personal commentary and a series of previously unseen photographs. understood he says, that it s just a matter of looking. He describes himself as a student of light, and the radiance of each images is the unifying factor in this beautiful book. A Place you Know is available as a limited edition box set including two signed limited edition prints of 495 copies, and as a high quality stand-alone collector s book. Collectors Edition 55 Limited Edition 160 The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. John first discovered his love of landscape through walking and this passion comes across very clearly in these pages. As he wandered the fields near his home, he found himself thinking I want to paint this but why? There s nothing here. But, he went on, there was. There was light. This realisation opened his mind to art I suddenly Marcel Proust (novelist, ) Available Mid March
KEVIN BANDEE NATURAL FORMATIONS NATURAL FORMATIONS KEVIN BANDEE The natural transformations of KE IN BANDEE This March, alongside collections from some of our most established and acclaimed published artists, we are delighted to introduce an inspirational and hugely talented new addition to our originals portfolio, Kevin Bandee. DANCING DRAGONFLY 3D Mixed Media Size 23 x 24
KEVIN BANDEE NATURAL FORMATIONS NATURAL FORMATIONS KEVIN BANDEE Although every piece of art has an impact on the room it is placed in, some artists have a special gift for transforming an interior at a stroke, and Kevin is one of the most exciting members of this elite and highly-prized band of artistic innovators. Kevin s luminous original paintings vibrate with a kaleidoscope of dazzling shades which convey the brilliance of the natural world at its most complex and beautiful. Since we first showed his work in our portfolio, the vivid hues of butterflies and dragonflies have banished the winter blues and brought warmth, light and intense colour into homes across the country. But it is not only that instant hit of colour that makes these stunning paintings stand out from the crowd. They also have a unique sculptural element to them, whereby Kevin creates a three dimensional effect using a variety of techniques including, he says, marbling, pouring, chemical reaction, fluid and flow. His actual process is a closely guarded secret and this has ensured that his work remains unmistakably his own. The detail, skill and care which he lavishes on each painting renders each one as distinctive as the individual butterflies he loves to paint, and this in turn transforms every room they inhabit into a uniquely expressive personal space. The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance. Aristotle Kevin s vivid images are inspired by fractals, infinite complex pictures of repeating geometric shapes that exist within nature. They can be found in the intricate details of trees, snowflakes, clouds and crystals, and he uses their shapes and concepts in combination with dazzling colours and some of nature s most beautiful creations. His ambition to recreate these amazing natural effects in his paintings was where his artistic journey began. Kevin was interested in art from an early age and this interest matured into a passion. A selftaught artist and visionary, he began working with tools that he made himself and experimented with ideas ranging from digital landscapes to metal wall art. There was, and is, always a collection of research materials and images stored away in his studio to be used in the future for that next piece. CRIMSON FLIGHT 3D Mixed Media Size 16 x 31
KEVIN BANDEE A PLACE YOU KNOW NATURAL FORMATIONS KEVIN BANDEE Kevin has explored a wide range of subjects, but when he came across the symbolism of butterflies he was inspired to paint them. He forged an immediate and immensely strong connection with this subject; through further research he discovered that butterflies are important symbols in many different cultures, often connected with joy, peace and transformation. Although he says he is not especially spiritual in his day to day life, the two things are connected in his mind, and this gives his art an added emotional dimension. Although he acknowledges his admiration for other artists, Kevin has always sought to depart from existing styles and genres and to make something which is both new and original. His extensive experimentation and the many hours spent painting in the studio have led him to a multi-layered approach in which varying depths of colour and texture create a mesmerizing whole. My aim has always been to find my own voice - a style free of outside influences that has never been seen before, and my fractal inspired homages to nature are highly personal and, I hope, unique. PURPLE FLUTTER 3D Mixed Media Size 29 x 39 Kevin s extraordinary hand-crafted pieces are available at some superb introductory prices so do take the opportunity to enquire with the gallery about securing one of his original pieces.
ANNA RAZUMOVSKAYA APPASSIONATA APPASSIONATA ANNA RAZUMOVSKAYA ANNA RAZUMOVSKAYA Appassionata My work celebrates the joy and the brightness in living, the artistry of musicians and dancers, and the sensuality, elegance and complete freedom of the human form. Appasionata brings together a pair of highly anticipated collectable canvases from one of the most exciting names on the contemporary art scene, Anna Razumovskaya. This exhilarating new collection perfectly captures both musical passion and the fluid tranquillity of the female form within two exquisite and captivating pieces. Anna s choice of subjects is guided by her search for beauty and her intimate portraits capture a brief, perfect moment with a refreshing rejection of artifice. Her figures are rendered perfectly and naturally, and the use of extensive detail in the foreground is complemented by impressionistic backgrounds that serve more fully to define the subject while contributing her signature rich colours and evocative moods. Anna allows her love of the exquisite free rein and draws together a whole range of influences and inspiration, from classical portraiture and music to contemporary fashion, music and dance. The drape of luxuriant fabric illuminates her appreciation of timeless haute couture design, and her beautiful models display a careless, unhurried poise.
ANNA RAZUMOVSKAYA APPASSIONATA APPASSIONATA ANNA RAZUMOVSKAYA Born in Russia at the height of the Cold War, Anna grew up in a world of strict rules, longing for colour, glamour and freedom of expression. Her father was an officer in the KGB and had pledged himself and his family to the austere lifestyle of a dedicated communist, but her mother was cut from a different cloth. Chic and sophisticated, this stylish subversive cultivated an elegant personal appearance and encouraged her young daughter to follow her example teaching her to take an interest in objects of beauty in the world, and encouraging her to play with the precious treasury of Razumovsky family jewellery. STORY OF LOVE Embellished Canvas on Board Size 18 x 24 Framed 775 Thanks to her mother Anna grew up with an innate love of fashion which has pervaded both her life and her art. When she makes a personal appearance at a gallery in the UK, she radiates an exotic and extravagant sense of style which combines with her wonderfully warm personality and ready laugh to make her an irresistible guest. Her paintings seem to be an extension of this charming and elegant woman, channelling her personality and perception of beauty. Expressive, inventive and unpretentious, she could be described as the living embodiment of her art. Story of Love explores the intimate connection between music and emotions. Turning away, the subject claims the moment to herself as she reflects upon how her experiences of love have inspired and driven her passion for music. As I paint I believe the figures take on a life of their own, and lead me where they want to go.
ANNA RAZUMOVSKAYA APPASSIONATA APPASSIONATA ANNA RAZUMOVSKAYA FLIRTING WITH A VIOLIN Embellished Canvas on Board Size 18 x 24 Framed 775 Flirting With A Violin explores the playful relationship between musician and instrument, whilst the subject herself pursues creativity with joyous abandonment. Here the colours are reflective, alive. It s as though they are dancing behind and around her, rejoicing in her musical passion. Available Early March
JENNINE PARKER FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT JENNINE PARKER FREEDOM of movement This concept of communicating an idea or an emotion is also at the heart of Jennine s work: Intimacy (shown here) for example, is not a fully realistic representation of two figures, yet the idea is expressed with an extraordinary clarity and vitality. Sculpture is widely collected across the UK, and an increasing number of contemporary artists are producing exciting and innovative work in three dimensions. In the midst of this trend, certain individuals stand out from the field, and Jennine Parker is undoubtedly one of this exalted company. Jennine s arresting bronzes are both beautiful and unmistakable. Following in the footsteps of some of the greatest European sculptors of the past, she uses the non finis technique to create immense drama. Like Rodin, whose work seems to be trying to break out of the stone from which it is carved, she allows her highly polished, elongated figures to emerge almost organically from a rough-hewn base as if they are stretching up out of the earth towards the skies. This juxtaposition of smooth and textured surfaces amongst her curves and shapes renders these distinctive works as stimulating to the touch as to the sight. Rodin considered his work to be finished once it successfully expressed his idea, and as a result his sculpture is varied in technique; some is polished, some is gouged and scraped, and some seems scarcely to have emerged from the rough stone.
JENNINE PARKER FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT JENNINE PARKER Jennine s mesmerising figurative sculpture also represents a unique interpretation of the human body and its capabilities. Taking the energy and grace of the dancer or gymnast as her starting point here, she has created a masterly bronze evocation of life with a strong sense of movement and personality. Dance played a huge role in my life as I grew up. Dance and art were always my life and passion and although I do not dance today, subconsciously it always comes out in my work. Dance is a way for the human body to express its energy through graceful or interesting curves and lines, creating movement and shape. In much the same way, my sculpture expresses movement, shape and texture - the human form imaginatively evoked through curves and shapes Naturally I am a very open person and I enjoy having close relationships with people. For me, intimacy between two people is priceless. I prefer to work in clay, the feeling of the texture and the way you can manipulate the clay is very entrancing. But before I start each piece I have think about what material I need to work in. Although I prefer working in clay, sometimes depending on the complexity of the piece, I might need to work in wax, but I can t always get the finish I need so I have to weigh up what would work best for the finished piece. I always start with a wire armature and build on it, if I am using wax it is much easier to manipulate and change my work; also the wax requires less maintenance as it does not dry out. If I work in clay I have to spray the piece with water and keep it covered, otherwise it will dry out and be difficult to work with. Once the piece is completed, it goes to the foundry to be translated into bronze. The type of base and how the piece will be assembled is also u important to me - it s not just about sculpting - it s looking at the whole process through every stage, to create the final sculpture. LET S DANCE Bronze Sculpture Size 6 x 20 Framed 1095
JENNINE PARKER FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT Jennine s art is rooted in one of the longest cultural histories on the planet. The earliest known human artefacts that we would describe as sculpture date from roughly 40,000 years ago. Carved from stone or ivory they are small female figures with exaggerated physical attributes which are generally assumed to be fertility symbols. Thousands of generations later In the 21st century, despite the total transformation of the world around us, the human form has remained a powerful and dominant theme for sculptors. Yet within the broad term of figurative sculpture, there is a seemingly endless range of artistic possibilities. Jennine s own work is characterised by originality and always tells a deeply personal story. Although sculpture does not have the scope to play with light and atmosphere in the way a painting can, it has its own INTIMACY Bronze Sculpture Size 6 x 20 Framed 1095 reality - a vivid physical presence that is denied to the pictorial arts. The forms of sculpture are tangible as well as visible, and so they have a direct appeal not only visually, but also to our tactile sensibilities. All three-dimensional forms are perceived as having an expressive character as well as purely geometric properties, striking the observer as delicate, aggressive, flowing, taut, relaxed, dynamic, soft, and so on. By exploiting these expressive qualities of form, Jennine is able to communicate a wide range of subtle and powerful feelings through her work.
