Appearances and Meaning: Form, Content, and Context Lecture 2 Please note that some of the terms used in this presentation differ from your textbook. You will be tested on this information!

Developing Visual Literacy

Developing Visual Literacy Overview Learn terms that will allow you to think critically about visual images. Form Content Subject Matter Iconography Rene Magritte, The Treason of Images, Deepen your understanding of the relationship among words, images, and real world objects.

Form and Content Form is the way art looks. Form is created through the subject matter, visual elements, principles of design, and media. Form appeals to the senses (sight, touch). Content is what the art is about, what it means, the message. Content appeals to the mind and heart. Shirin Neshat, Rebellious Silence (from the serious Women of Allah), 1994.

Types of Form: Representational Representational Art depicts natural objects in a recognizable manner. The subject matter, the objects and events shown, are easy to discern. Realistic: the work resembles what the eye actually sees. Mimetic or Naturalistic: the work imitates reality but it has a personal or subjective twist. Rodin, The Kiss, 1889.

Types of Form: Abstraction Abstract Art (in this class) refers to works that depict natural objects in simplified, distorted, or exaggerated ways. Abstraction is used to emphasize certain qualities. It is sometimes difficult to make out the subject matter of abstract works. Brancusi, The Kiss, 1907.

Types of Form: Nonrepresentational Non-representational art does not represent or refer to anything outside of itself. Non-representational art communicates in the very language of art itself, through color, line, and form. Do NOT fall into the trap of thinking Non-Representational art does not have content. Barbara Hepworth, Menhirs

What do these works have in common? How are these works different?

Decorative or Functional Arts and Crafts Some examples of art cannot be classified as representational or nonrepresentational because they are functional objects. Known as decorative arts or crafts. Examples include vases, furniture, quilts, jewelry, and ceramics just to name a few.

Art and Meaning: Iconography Iconography is the symbolic meaning of signs, subjects, and images. Not all works contain symbols that can be read in this manner. Stained glass window from Chartres Cathedral. The Lamb of God. 12 th century.

Iconography of the 21 st Century

Iconographical symbols include: Monk s robes Long ears Bun (ushnisha) Hand gesture (mudra) of meditation Lotus flower throne Halo of flame Amida Nyorai (Japanese Buddha of Infinite Light or Western Paradise), 13 th century.

Iconographical symbols include: Green dress Rounded belly Canopy bed Dog Bare foot groom Lone candle Jan van Eyck, Giovanni Arnolfini and His Wife Giovanna Cenami, ca

Art and Meaning: Context Context is defined as the environment in which something occurs. The setting. In what context do we experience art today?

Titian s Assumption, seen in Venice and as seen in a textbook Mona Lisa, and as it is seen in the Louvre Finial of a linguist s staff from Ghana in museum and in use.

Art in Context: Questions to Ask Original culture? Original setting? Original audience? Original purpose? Has time changed the appearance of the object?

Participation Activity Part 1 Describe the appearance of the following pairs of works as representational, abstract, or nonrepresentational.

Michelangelo, David Giacometti, Man Striding

Tunic from Peru, wool and cotton, ca The Unicorn in Captivity; wool, silk, and metallic threads ca. 1500

Mark Rothko Sunset photo from the web

Representational art/mimesis is not a sign of talent and Abstraction a lack thereof. Art looks the way it does in order to convey a message to the audience. First Communion and Woman with Fan both by Pablo Picasso

Chapter 2 Developing Visual Literacy

Chapter 2 Developing Visual Literacy Chapter 2 Developing Visual Literacy Art is a visual language. Images are read just like sentences in a book. The deliberate decisions that artists make about Form (color, size, media, composition) are
