3 1.2 SUMMARY A. Section includes surface preparation and the application of paint systems on [interior substrates.] [the following interior substrates:] 1. Concrete. 2. Concrete masonry units (CMU). 3. Steel. 4. Cast iron. 5. Galvanized metal. 6. Aluminum (not anodized or otherwise coated). 7. Wood. 8. Gypsum board. 9. Plaster. B. Related Requirements: Retain subparagraphs below to cross-reference requirements Contractor might expect to find in this Section but are specified in other Sections. Factory- or shop-applied primers applied as Work of other Sections must be coordinated with field-applied finish coats. Review other Sections for factory- or shop-primed products and reference this Section for product requirements. 1. Section "Structural Steel Framing" for shop priming of metal substrates with primers specified in this Section. 2. Section "High-Performance Coatings" for high-performance and special-use coatings. 3. Section "Staining and Transparent Finishing" for surface preparation and the application of wood stains and transparent finishes on interior wood substrates. 1.3 DEFINITIONS Definitions of gloss levels below are from "MPI Architectural Painting ification Manual" (hereafter, "MPI Manual"). Retain terms that remain after this Section has been edited for a project. A. Gloss Level 1, Matte or Flat finish: 0 to 5 units at 60 degrees and maximum 10 units at 85 degrees. B. Gloss Level 2, Velvet finish: Maximum 10 units at 60 degrees and 10 to 35 units at 85 degrees. C. Gloss Level 3, Eggshell finish: 10 to 25 units at 60 degrees and 10 to 35 units at 85 degrees. D. Gloss Level 4, Satin finish: 20 to 35 units at 60 degrees and minimum 35 units at 85 degrees. E. Gloss Level 5, Semi-Gloss finish: 35 to 70 units at 60 degrees. F. Gloss Level 6, Gloss finish: 70 to 85 units at 60 degrees. G. Gloss Level 7, High-Gloss finish: More than 85 units at 60 degrees. H. 4 I. ASTM: ASTM International develops international standards for materials, products, systems and services used in construction, manufacturing and transportation: J. Bio-Pruf : Anti-microbial additive that inhibits the growth of odor and stain causing mold and mildew on the paint film. Antimicrobial is defined as any means or mode of restricting growth or spread of microbes. K. CHPS: Collaborative for High Performance Schools. A national movement to improve student performance and the entire educational experience by building the best possible schools: L. CRGI: Coatings Research Group Inc. is an international association of paint and coatings manufacturers dedicated to the benefits of shared research and development: crgiconnect.com M. DTM: Direct to metal. A coating that can be applied directly to a metal surface; refer to manufacturer s product information for surface preparation and application instructions. N. EG: Ethylene Glycol. Ethylene glycol is listed as a hazardous air pollutant (HAP) by the U.S. EPA: O. EPR: Environmental Performance Rating. Master Painters Institute s formula that relates VOC, Performance of Category, Gloss and Appropriate specified use. Higher values equate to greater eco-efficiency. P. HAP: Hazardous Air Pollutant: According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Hazardous air pollutants, also known as toxic air pollutants or air toxics, are those pollutants that cause or may cause cancer or other serious health effects, such as reproductive effects or birth defects, or adverse environmental and ecological effects: Q. LEED: LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a voluntary, consensus-based, market-driven program that provides third-party verification of green buildings: R. MPI: Master Painters Institute. An organization that establishes architectural paint standards and quality assurance programs in North America: S. PDCA: Painting & Decorating Contractors of America: T. RAVOC: Reactivity adjusted VOC. Reactivity means the ability of a VOC to promote ozone formation. U. SCAQMD: South Coast Air Quality Management District is defined as most of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties in California. V. SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings. Surface preparation standards and specifications: W. Tier I Areas: Areas with exposure to moderate cleaning solutions and methods (e.g., lobbies, waiting rooms, offices, corridors). X. Tier II Areas: A reas where typical cleaning includes aggressive cleaning solutions and methods (e.g., emergency rooms and isolated patient rooms). Y. Tier III Areas: Areas with the highest exposure to harsh cleaning solutions including bleach and methods including intense scrubbing (e.g., sterilization rooms, operating rooms). 5 1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product. Include preparation requirements and application instructions. B. LEED Submittals: "Product Data for Credit IEQ 4: Low-Emitting Materials Subparagraph below applies to LEED- Healthcare. Coordinate with requirements for paints and coatings. 1. Product Data for Credit IEQ 4: For paints and coatings, including printed statement of VOC content. C. Samples for Initial Selection: For each type of topcoat product. Delete "Samples for Initial Selection" Paragraph above if colors and other characteristics are preselected and specified or scheduled. Retain "Samples for Verification" Paragraph below with or without above. D. Samples for Verification: For each type of paint system and in each color and gloss of topcoat. 1. Submit Samples on rigid backing, no smaller than 7 inches X 10 inches (177 X 254 mm) or larger than 8.5 X 11 inches (216 X 280 mm). 2. Label each Sample for project, architect, general contractor, painting contractor, paint color name and number, paint brand name, P number if applicable, and application area.. E. Product List: For each product indicated, include the following: 1. Cross-reference to paint system and locations of application areas. Use same designations indicated on Drawings and in schedules. 2. Following the format prescribed in Part 2. PRODUCTS, submit physical properties data and appropriate test results for each proposed product substitution. See "Writing Guide" Article in the Evaluations in Section "Painting" Section "Painting" for discussion of first subparagraph below. 3. Printout of current "MPI Approved Products List" for each product category specified in Part 2, with the proposed product highlighted. 4. VOC content. 1.5 MAINTENANCE MATERIAL SUBMITTALS A. Furnish extra materials, from the same product run, that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents. Retain "Paint" Subparagraph below for projects that require only limited quantities of extra materials. If necessary, replace percentage with a specific number of gallons (liters) or cases and include an expanded description of the quantity of each material and color. 1. Paint: Not less than 1 gal. 6 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Mockups: Apply mockups of each paint system indicated and each color and finish selected to verify preliminary selections made under Sample submittals and to demonstrate aesthetic effects and set quality standards for materials and execution. 1. Architect will select one surface to represent surfaces and conditions for application of each paint system specified in Part 3. a. Vertical and Horizontal Surfaces: Provide samples of at least 100 sq. ft. (9 sq. m). b. Other Items: Architect will designate items or areas required. 2. Final approval of color selections will be based on mockups. a. If preliminary color selections are not approved, apply additional mockups of additional colors selected by Architect at no added cost to Owner. 3. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract Documents contained in mockups unless Architect specifically approves such deviations in writing. Retain subparagraph below if the intention is to make an exception to the default requirement in Section "Quality Requirements" Section "Quality Requirements" for demolishing and removing mockups. 4. Subject to compliance with requirements, approved mockups may become part of the completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion. 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Store materials not in use in tightly covered containers in well-ventilated areas with ambient temperatures continuously maintained at not less than 45 deg F (7 deg C). 1. Maintain containers in clean condition, free of foreign materials and residue. 2. Remove rags and waste from storage areas daily. If necessary, insert special requirements for fire protection, heating, ventilation, and other conditions for storage areas on-site. 1.8 FIELD CONDITIONS A. Apply paints only when temperature of surfaces to be painted and ambient air temperatures are between 50 and 105 deg F (10 and 41 deg C). B. Do not apply paints when relative humidity exceeds 85 percent; at temperatures less than 5 deg F (3 deg C) above the dew point; or to damp or wet surfaces. C. Painting contractor should follow proper painting practices and exercise judgment based on his or her experience and project specific conditions as to when to proceed. HEALTHCARE INTERIOR PAINTING
7 PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products listed from Dunn- Edwards Corp and Monopole, Inc. for the paint and coating category indicated, or comparable products by one of the following: 1. Pratt & Lambert. B. Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide product listed in other Part 2 articles for the paint category indicated. 2.2 PAINT, GENERAL A. Material Compatibility: Systems could fail if paints used for individual coats are incompatible. Paint systems match primers and topcoats and take compatibility into consideration. 1. Provide materials for use within each paint system that are compatible with one another and substrates indicated, under conditions of service and application as demonstrated by manufacturer, based on testing and field experience. 2. For each coat in a paint system, provide products recommended in writing by manufacturers of topcoat for use in paint system and on substrate indicated. Retain the following for projects located within the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD): B. VOC Content: Products shall comply with VOC limits of SCAQMD and, for interior paints and coatings applied at Project site, the following VOC limits, exclusive of colorants added to a tint base, when calculated according to 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24). 1. Flat Paints and Coatings: 50 g/l. 2. Nonflat Paints and Coatings: 50 g/l. 3. Primers, Sealers, and Undercoaters: 100 g/l. 4. Rust Preventative Coatings: 100 g/l. 5. Floor Coatings: 100 g/l. 6. Shellacs, Clear: 730 g/l. 7. Shellacs, Pigmented: 550 g/l. Retain the following for projects located outside of the SCAQMD: C. VOC Content: Products shall comply with VOC limits of authorities having jurisdiction[ and, for interior paints and coatings applied at Project site, the following VOC limits, exclusive of colorants added to a tint base, when calculated according to 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24)]. 1. Flat Paints and Coatings: 50 g/l. 2. Nonflat Paints and Coatings: 150 g/l. 3. Dry-Fog Coatings: 400 g/l. 4. Primers, Sealers, and Undercoaters: 200 g/l. 5. 8 6. Zinc-Rich Industrial Maintenance Primers: 340 g/l. 7. Pretreatment Wash Primers: 420 g/l. 8. Floor Coatings: 100 g/l. 9. Shellacs, Clear: 730 g/l. 10. Shellacs, Pigmented: 550 g/l. LEED for Healthcare guides the design and construction of both new buildings and major renovations of existing buildings, and can be applied to inpatient, outpatient and licensed long-term care facilities, medical offices, assisted living facilities and medical education and research centers. As of January 1, 2012 projects that meet the requirements outlined in the Rating System Selection Guide must use LEED for Healthcare. Note link: Retain the following for LEED for Healthcare projects. D. VOC Content: Paints and coatings used on the interior of the building defined as inside of the weatherproofing system and applied on-site shall not exceed the VOC content limits established in South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Rule 1113, Architectural Coatings. (Rules in effect on July 1, 2008.) 1. Paints (flat & non-flat, except anti-rust) 50 g/l VOC 2. Clear wood finishes (varnish, lacquer or sanding sealers) 275 g/lvoc 3. Floor coatings 50 g/l VOC 4. Stains 100 g/l VOC C. Colorants: The use of colorants containing hazardous chemicals, such as ethylene glycol, is prohibited. E. Colors: [As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range] [Match Architect's samples] [As indicated in a color schedule]. 1. When the final color has not been selected prior to bid submittal, Contractor may need to bid additional coats when submitting their bid. The Owner should be aware that if a color is chosen following the bid process and the color is significantly different from original color, a change order for an additional finish coat might be required. Paints in these articles are specified by reference to MPI paint categories and optional MPI numbers. Note that each paint category below is unique within this Section and is identical to that used in the Interior Painting Schedule at the end of Part 3. If retaining subsequent articles, first revise the Interior Painting Schedule; then retain, delete, and insert appropriate products in subsequent articles to correspond with paint systems specified in the Interior Painting Schedule. Description: A smooth, acrylic latex heavy-bodied primer/filler for porous cinder block and concrete block. Description: A premium interior Zero VOC latex velvet paint that has very low odor and no added organic solvents. N/A 2.10 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL Retain this article for large projects or critical coatings where additional control is needed. Delete if tests are not required. I. Testing of Paint Materials: Owner reserves the right to invoke the following procedure: 1. Owner may engage the services of a qualified testing agency to sample paint materials. Contractor will be notified in advance and may be present when samples are taken. If paint materials have already been delivered to Project site, samples may be taken at Project site. Samples will be identified, sealed, and certified by testing agency. 2. Testing agency will perform tests for compliance with product requirements. HEALTHCARE INTERIOR PAINTING Owner may direct Contractor to stop applying coatings if test results show materials being used do not comply with product requirements. Contractor shall remove noncomplying paint materials from Project site, pay for testing, and repaint surfaces painted with rejected materials. Contractor will comply with requirements to use compatible products and systems as described in 2.2.A. Contractor will be required to remove rejected materials from previously painted surfaces if, on repainting with complying materials, the two paints are incompatible. HEALTHCARE INTERIOR PAINTING
