2 EUROCOMPO The ancient masters practiced a high-level geometry, and these skills speak directly to the mathematicians, artists and architects. The reconstitution of this forgotten practice presents a great interest for students, for their Culture as well as for their Creative Potential.

3 5 000 YEARS OF CIVILIZATION Since the dawn Neolithic up to the Renaissance, artists and architects composed their works with a particularly geometry. This unrecognized discipline is called sacred geometry, and its mathematical properties are absent from school textbooks. The divine proportion, the iconic golden ratio, is the only identified element of this culture, and we are not nearly to explain all. A new discipline for the study The study of the artworks requires a methodology. The comparison of the works by their geometrical structure allows to restore this forgotten culture. Thus a discipline is born : the «Comparative Geometry». Presentation on right ᐅ With the support of french IREM (Institutes of Research in Mathematics Education), Yvo Jacquier has isolated the purely mathematical basis from the practice. The sacred geometry is built on a grid that allows an easy measurement of the figures (escaping to calculation). For example, as visible as could be the golden ratio in the works, the original definition owes nothing to the numbers : the first definition is purely geometrical. The numbers that accompany these figures bring a symbolic meaning. Thus we can translate the works through their composition. These basic numbers are essentially the integers from 1 to 7 plus some irrational, like the root of three ( 3) and the golden ratio (φ). Note : The study of the golden ratio, only, does not allow the complete interpretation, the complete set of values is needed. Geometry with eyes The ancient masters practiced a pre-euclidean geometry (long before the Greeks). 5 EUROCOMPO PROJECT The schools of art and architecture are concerned by the skills in composition. This discipline is a common area. The project in question is both educational and creative. It aims to give a second breath, contemporary, to the practice of Ancients. The perspective system is one topic, and it finds the real place that he had in history. During the Renaissance, the artists practiced two systems within the same works. They exploited the perspective for its ability to realism, and the sacred geometry to give a symbolic meaning to their creations. The two frames are complementary, and in some cases such as the engraving «MELENCOLIA I» by Albrecht Dürer, the two systems meet to form a message : «The perspective system might bring illusion, whereas the sacred geometry carries the truth of hidden symbols.» ᐊ Chapter : The «Perspective Box» History of art The obvious interest of this vast reconstruction is historical. The Comparative Geometry reveals the secrets of masterpieces like : «The Holy Trinity» by Andrei Rublev «The Birth of Venus» by Sandro Botticelli «MELENCOLIA I» by Albrecht Dürer and also the structures of the temples of Uruk, the pyramids of Egypt and the Roman and Gothic churches. The Icons keep an important place because Byzantium has been a major center for the development for this art of composition. Among many articles, here is the latest to date, on a drawing by Botticelli for the «Divine Comedy» by Dante. ᐅ

6 Education - Composition as a job This practice concerns professional and creative people, in art and architecture, and the high level of its geometry limits its dissemination in amateur circles. Nobody is surprised by the selection in music. It would be a shame to pretend that visual artists are less evolved. At school, the contemplation of the masterpieces brings inspiration to students for their final projects - they do not intend to enter career as curator. The first goal of EUROCOMPO project is to give them skills to improve their creation. ᐅ The teachers have a major role This article addresses them in particular, with an overview of Comparative Geometry including the methodology of the study, crucial point for its credibility. The different types of School Projects The geometrical structures of the works, their composition, can be the basis for many types of projects by the students. The dialogue between the figures and the works can be the purpose of a personal work. Next, the structures of the works may be partly re-deployed in other works. Generally, this geometry, understood and assimilated, can become a tool in the creation of contemporary works. The connections between schools The schools might gather around a single question : «What means composition?». This is an opportunity for them to meet, to exchange views and to formulate common projects. Mode of action How to manage the collaboration? The exchange might be developed by steps. Meetings with teachers, conferences, creation of specialized articles for students, workshops inside the school, exhibitions...

7 COMPLEMENTARY ACTIONS Twelve years of research have involved many collaborations, and several concrete projects reflect different approaches of this fantastic heritage. They don't all develop at the same speed, however they are all bound by a kind of collective affinity. A general presentation is accessible at the address : In the context of this precise field, concerning schools, we will focus on the more visual projects. A video mapping about «The Birth of Venus» ᐃ The artist Dan Gregor is a well known in the practice of a new technology, called video mapping. A perfect vector for the sacred geometry. All the figures will become light in a very didactic way. More than a visit card for the ancients, Dan will open the space of time to the art of Sandro Botticelli - he offered eternity to Simonetta Vespucci in the «Birth of Venus».

8 A studio of Icons The composition layers of the icons show the original design and thus, they improve the quality of their copy. The Bulgarian iconographer Tencho Stalev shares his experience of tradition with Yvo Jacquier who, in turn, brings the secrets of this original geometry. The first example will be «Vladimirskaya». ᐅ Contemporary Painting After twelve years of research, Yvo Jacquier is back to his painting studio. He invests the lessons of the greatest masters in his drawings. This geometry is not visible because its virtual lines are digested by the real ones of the final work.
