1 Year 4 Topic Map Spring first 2018 Ms Andrews Science States of Matter Classify materials as solids or liquids by observing their properties. Explore the properties of solids and liquids. Use key properties to distinguish between liquids and solids. Geography Rivers Locate local river using maps and photographs. Use OS maps and computers, locate River Frome. Can you locate the source of the River Frome? Where does it enter the sea? How long is the River Frome? What other river joins the sea at the same place? What is the river used for? Describe the journey and identify the main features of a river. Follow river s journey from source to sea. Describe and explain the water cycle. Where does water comes from? How does water reach the ground? What happens to water when it is on the ground? Demonstrate different parts of water cycle. RE What is The Trinity? Understand the symbolism of water. In groups think about what water is: life giving, refreshing, cleansing, beautiful, dangerous, still, flowing, powerful, reflective, like a mirror, thirst quenching. Choose five top meanings of water. Identify a, Gospel, as a life story or biography of the life and teaching of Jesus. The Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist: Matthew 3:11-17 Introduce the idea of a Gospel a life story of the life of Jesus. Read this story, from one of the four gospels. Look at two paintings of The Baptism; discuss how painters show God. Christians believe God is three in one, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Recognise that Christians show their belief about God the Trinity in prayer. The Grace: 2 Corinthians 13:14 This is a different kind of prayer; it is not addressed to God but offers a blessing to people. It is usually called, The Grace. Share the Trinity Chant, a kenning poem Think about the 18 things that Christians believe God does. The Trinity
2 Plan a fair test investigation to test ideas about melting ice. Look at ice hand; record observations throughout the day. What observations/ measurements could we make? Challenge children to plan their own investigations on the effect of different variables on how fast ice melts. Collect, present and interpret data about melting ice. 1. Investigate the effect of size on the rate of ice melting. 2. Investigate the effect of shape on the rate of ice melting. 3. Investigate the effect of temperature on the rate of ice melting. Define melting and freezing. How do we change ice to water? Complete water cycle diagrams. Water cycle in a bag Observe evaporation taking place. Describe and explain, What happens to the rain? Poetry that explains the water cycle. Identify and explain how rivers erode, transport and deposit materials, producing particular landscape features. Discuss meanders and how they are formed. Explain erosion, transportation and deposition. Write a poem based on Valerie Blooms, The River. Why did Britain s worst river flood take place at Lymouth and what has been done to stop it happening again? Identify, describe and explain why the location and surrounding environment of Lynmouth creates a danger of flash flooding. Explain the reasons for and effects of the 1952 flood. Evaluate measures taken at Lynmouth to prevent history repeating itself? Identify and explain what water is used for and how much is used in the home. Identify how rivers are used by humans. Divide into groups: home, industry, leisure, farms. Think about and describe water usage in these areas. Think about God the Father, creator of all things; Jesus, whose life changed the world by rescuing people from the fall of humanity and from sin; and The Holy Spirit who gives life to the people of God. Recognise that Christians show their belief about God the Trinity in Baptism. What do Christians say when they baptise a baby, or a grown up? The prayer includes the Trinity. Make links between some Bible texts studied and what people believe about God in the world today. Write the three words: Baptism, Prayer and Trinity in circles at the edge of a piece of paper.

Raisins in lemonade. Classify materials as solids, liquids, gases. Working in groups with balloons filled with ice, water, air. Which contains solid/ liquid/ gas? Sort materials using knowledge gained. Collect data to answer a question about drying washing (a football kit) and investigate evaporation. Suggest a variable to change for a fair test. What will they measure to collect data? Is there anything we need to keep the same? 1. Investigate how the wind affects how much time it takes fabric to dry. 2. Investigate how the amount of water (wetness) affects how much time fabric takes to dry. 3. Investigate how temperature affects how much ~ Discuss our location and how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place. Reflect on happy/sad times spent on or by a river. ~ Compare the river s journey with the journey of life. The river is aiming to reach the sea. Where are we hoping to go in our lives? ~ Think about countries in the world who suffer from drought. What do they drink to keep themselves alive? How do they grow crops to feed their families? ~ Imagine a world without water? What would happen? ~ Water can be dangerous and powerful. It can cause landslides and tsunamis. What happens to people directly impacted by such events? How can we help? ~ What happens to people whose homes are flooded? Imagine losing all your personal belongings. Imagine losing your home. What can Draw lines to connect them between the Bible stories and texts we have looked at. Think of questions you could ask about links. Make suggestions about what Trinity might mean. How can you see God as three in one? A common metaphor for The Trinity is ice, water and steam. All three are the same but different. ~ Think about places in the world where clean water is not readily available. Some children walk for miles daily to collect unclean water. What can we do to help? How can we save water? ~ There are many different religions in the world today and some people are Humanists, who live by their own moral code. How can we write a Class Grace that represents all our different beliefs? ~ Think about people who do things for others. Who are they and what do they do? How do people who do things for others make us feel? ~ Nearly everything in life is linked to another in some way. Connections are very important. If we damage one part of the natural world it causes changes to the whole ECO system. What

Find patterns; use these to answer the investigation question. Think about what findings tell us about evaporation. ~ What are melting polar ice caps? What changes will their melting make to us? When ice melts at an increasing rate, the rest of the world is affected. If the polar ice caps melted, how much would the oceans rise? How would temperatures be affected? How can we prevent melting ice caps? The melting of the polar ice caps is caused by the overall increase in global temperature, and this we do to help flood victims? ~ Think about people in underdeveloped countries who struggle to survive without clean water. Recognise how all life on earth is dependent on water. ~ Discuss our water usage and the importance of conserving water. Do we waste water? What would we do without water? Art Impressionist s Rivers Introduce Claude Monet as a French impressionist painter who painted many different river scenes. Share Houses of Parliament, Autumn on the Seine at Argenteuil, Bridge at Argenteuil, and, Impression Sunrise. Discuss different techniques used in paintings. Give children small sections of paintings to recreate using charcoal on different sized paper. Simplify and enlarge small section from Monet painting. Mix own paint colours, using gouache. Introduce Pierre-Auguste Renoir as a French impressionist artist who painted river scenes. Share, The Skiff, River Landscape, and Bridge at Chatou. Share ideas on mediums used. Give children pens, coloured pencils and pastels to recreate section from paintings. Simplify and enlarge small section from Renoir painting. connections are important to us? Why? English Poetry Similes Poets use similes to create a vivid picture for the reader. Discuss commonly used similes and ask children to think about their choice of words. Slowly the Tide Creeps Up the Sand, James Reeves (Bob Cox) How successfully can you use repetition in a poem? Ask the children what types of movements are really slow? Write ideas on a continuum line. Decide on 8 slow movements. Link eight slow moving ideas together In two stanzas of four lines each. How does the repetition help the rhythm? How does the repetition of the slowly help make the poem so memorable? How are the last two lines different? The River, Valerie Bloom Discuss Poetic devices used in poem: personification, metaphors, imagery, repetition, similes, rhyme. What is the theme of the poem? How do the devices used create imagery?

Greenhouse gases such as water vapour, methane and carbon dioxide stop heat escaping from the Earth into space. An increased greenhouse effect can lead to global warming and climate change. Mix own paint colours, using gouache, water colours, poster paint to recreate Renoir image. Introduce Alfred Sisley as a British impressionist painter who spent most of his time in France. Look at, Moret at the Church, and, Loing River. Ask the children how these paintings compare to Monet and Renoirs. Use graded pencils to recreate section from paintings on different sized paper. Simplify and enlarge small section from painting. Mix own paint colours, using gouache, to recreate Sisley image. Paint onto collaged background. ~ In 1859, Monet went to Paris to study at the Why did the poet chose to use the language in the way they did? Syllables Rain, Jennifer Logue Each line in the poem has one more syllable than the previous line. Diamond poems grow to a certain point and then decrease growing/ shrinking. Cinquains Created by American poet Adelaide Crapsey 100 years ago. 5 lines long with only a few words on each line. They end up with a diamond like shape. Present poems using centralising on computer. 1 st line 2 syllables- one word to name subject 2 nd line -4 syllables-describe it 3 rd line 6 syllables action words 4 th line 8 syllables phrase, feeling describing what is happening 5 th line -2 syllables sums up or means the same as the first word. Share poems by Adelaide Crapsey, discuss form. Identify distinctive features. Children write their own cinquains. ~ Discuss what makes us who we are. What is important? What do the children want to portray about themselves in their writing? ~ Time passing is a fascinating topic. What do the children think about time passing? How do they think others feel about the passing of time?
