This years AWFS Fair will once again run from Wednesday through Saturday. If you have a question about SATA spray equipment visit our web site and click on FORUM. Q. The automatic discharge valve on the first stage of the SATA filter unit will not drain. Explain how to fix the problem? A. The automatic condensate discharge valve can be set on fully automatic or opened manually. To set the valve on automatic, you must turn the valve completely counter-clockwise, to the left until it stops. The float inside the filter canister will rise when condensate is present and open the valve and purge the filter. This filter will also purge when pressure inside the filter is below 11 psi. You can also By Wayne Volkart turn the valve completely clockwise and open it manually and purge the filter. If the valve is not opening automatically, it is usually because the valve is not set completely to the left, on automatic. If this does not free up the valve to purge, it may be a build up of scale or dirt inside the discharge bowl. The valve can easily be removed and a simple cleaning may be all that is necessary to free up the valve. Scheduled filter maintenance can prevent this and goes a long way towards avoiding such problems. Mitch and Tara Lanzini made the trip from Huntington Beach, California to Detroit, Michigan to debut their newly finished 1933 Ford Coupe named Stella D Oro (Star of Gold), a project that started eight years ago with a body and chassis, but was sidelined t o w o r k o n five seasons of Overhaulin. It was picked up again in 2008 and finished just in time for the 2009 Detroit Autorama! The car was s h o t w i t h a one-off BASF Carizzma color custom mixed by Mitch and sprayed using a SATA RP This was an extremely difficult color to spray and keep even, but the 3000, with its superior atomization, was instrumental in keeping the color even and blotch and streak-free, says Mitch. The effects obviously worked because the car not only won Best in its Class and Street Rod Builder s Award of Excellence, it was also displayed beside Chip Foose s Terracuda, another Best 2 Lanzini s "Stella D Oro" wins "Best in Class" at the 2009 Detroit Autorama with SATA! Bent Jorgenson also made the trip to Detroit from Minnesota to hang out and offer support, and it was a good thing too as our coupe got damaged in the transporter on the way and required some paint repair. Bent made a few phone calls, and within minutes, had a Satagraph airbrush and a small compressor available so we could make the repairs before judging started. Thank you to Bent, Dale and the entire SATA family for their awesome help and support through the years! Mitch says enthusiastically. We definitely couldn t have won without you! Mitch was quite impressed with the ease at which the 3000 was able to spray an extremely difficult custom color paint. SATA has a lot in store for its main attraction booth at SEMA. For many years SATA has had a booth at both the SEMA and NACE show, but with the addition of a paint section at SEMA, now is the perfect opportunity to focus exclusively on one show in Vegas. SATA's main attraction booth at NACE has always been one of the largest and most popular booths at the show, but now SEMA will be the main focus of our celebrity guests, hot rod and motorcycle displays, the latest in the SATA product line, painting demonstrations and so much more. Chip Foose has won several awards throughout the years including multiple Riddler award winners. In the past the SATA booth has displayed some of Chip's finest vehicles and this year at SEMA will be no different. SATA is also extremely excited to showcase our very own custom built SATA Chopper the "SATAjet". This one-of-akind, custom built bike by Kris Krome has been all the buzz of the motorcycle world since word of it became public. The bike will be on display at our booth during SEMA and this will be one of the first times this bike will be displayed publicly. 3 Proper Cleaning of your SATA Spray Guns Spray equipment cleaning has always been an important subject since the usage of air atomizing spray guns in the industry. Only well cleaned and maintained equipment secures equipment performance, spray reliability, long equipment lifetime and a perfect finish. Many painters, as well as trade professionals raise the subject of cleaning when starting to work with new paint systems. Questions such as waterborne paints being harder to remove and clean from surfaces compared to that of solvent-borne systems. This is why we would like to give spray gun cleaning another look. Some of the important facts of spray gun cleaning and maintenance: When having sprayed waterborne paints and after having cleaned the gun with gun cleaning media recommended by the paint manufacturer, we would recommend giving equipment a final rinse with pure water. Assure that only ph neutral cleaning media is used to clean spray equipment as otherwise, corrosion might appear. Use cleaning media/detergent recommended by corresponding paint manufacturers. After cleaning, spray equipment should always be wiped dry or blown dry, in particular fluid passages, air cap and spray gun head insides. Final statement: The better you clean and maintain your spray gun, the more it will delight you and work for a long time to your full satisfaction. Important advice for cleaning detergent Use cleaning detergent according to recommendation of the paint manufacturer! 4 FINISHLINE Design, Inc. SATA Spray Equipment and the Dan- Am Company are extremely fortunate to work with many great people in the industry. Brian and Leah Gall, owners of Finishline Design, Inc and SATA have a great working rela- tionship. You may have met them at one of our booths over the past several years. Leah Gall has put on several airbrush demonstrations during SEMA and NACE at the SATA booth, while Brian has met with those in attendance to discuss the industry and Finishline Design. Finishline Design, Inc. has been featured in several publications including Hot Bike and Ironworks magazines. They have been features in "How To" books on airbrushing and custom painting and graphics. Their work has won several awards including "Best in show" and "Best Paint Job" at the Donny Smith Invitational bike show. They also offer airbrush classes at their shop which are always popular and well attended. Leah says that she has always been artistic, a god given talent that wasn't truly developed until she began airbrushing at 21. Before that she designed clothes and jewelry and hand painted clothing. When she was a kid her mother kept her stocked up with paints and craft projects and dad had her help out with his auto body business mixing paint, sanding, but she had not begun painting yet. She then moved to Florida and worked full time at T-shirts Plus in the Melbourne Square Mall for about 4 of my Florida years. After going to Daytona s bike week in the mid 90 s, Leah was drawn into the biker world. She worked for Big Daddy Rat s operation (of Rat s Hole-bike shows) airbrushing streetside at Daytona and Sturgis. Leah says she met a lot of great people in the industry during this time and fell in love with airbrushing. About 7 or 8 years ago Leah moved back to Minnesota permanently and met Brian Gall. They worked together at his truck painting business. Since then they have developed their two painters make one good painter concept over the years. Leah's airbrushing and design, Brian's drive and perfectionism in his graphics and finishing have yielded something that draws and attracts those looking for art on their rolling canvases. Brian's interest in the industry began in St. Louis Park where he grew up and took body shop class at the local high school. After two years of high school classes, he took the same classes full-time for two more years. After the classes were complete, it was time to get a job. That A gorgeous airbrush painting done by Leah Gall on a mini hood. job was working at a local sport truck shop doing graphics on pickups and SUVs for four years. After some more people asked for Brian to do some side work, he decided to become his own boss. He worked out of his garage for a couple of years. Eventually the garage got to be too small and it was time to look for a new, bigger shop. He found one in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota. With the new shop came new customers, including the people at Lund Truck Accessories, who commissioned Brian for their Las Vegas show truck in This eventually lead to four more show trucks. At the same time other new customers had been coming to the door with smaller jobs in the form of motorcycles. Around this time is when Brian met his wife Leah and she brought a new type of work (airbrushing), and customer base to the workplace. The motorcycle jobs became a majority of the project load. A couple of magazine bikes came their way and it was time for a another shop move to a place that had a show room and office space for Leah and Brian. This shop was in Fridley, Minnesota. Lenny H. brought his vinyl cutting equipment to Brian and Leah to use in their art. This brought their capabilities to a whole new level. After a couple more years it was time to move yet again. The plan for this move was to re-locate out of town just a bit with the help of Leah s father. The land was found and purchased and Brian and Leah decided to put up a new pole building for the new shop. Due to restrictions on out-buildings, a new building could not be built without tearing down the barn, so Brian took on remodelling the barn for the new home of Finishline. Brian and Leah have a very different type of shop located in Rogers, MN. While they originally planned to put up a new building for their studio and workshop, instead they focused on the big ol' barn they took over and decided to transform the barn into the studio they always wanted. Besides replacing most of the under structure and adding a cement floor they added a 1500 sq. foot loft. The loft will eventually be the airbrush studio which will double as a classroom for lessons. So far the ongoing project has taken 3 years. The basement will be last to finish. It is a full basement that used to have 12 horse stalls. In the last stage of remodeling, the basement will have a body work prep room and a wet sanding prep area. This will complete the remodeling of the barn.
