Timothy H. O"Sullivan, photographer; Civil War printed by Alexander Gardner American, negative July 4, 1863; print 1866 Albumen silver print Slowly, over the misty fields of Gettysburg--as all reluctant to expose their ghastly horrors to the light--came the sunless morn, after the retreat by [General Robert. E.] Lee's broken army. Through the shadowy vapors, it was, indeed, a "harvest of death" that was presented; hundreds and thousands of torn Union and rebel soldiers--although many of the former were already interred--strewed the now quiet fighting ground, soaked by the rain, which for two days had drenched the country with its fitful showers.

Westward Expansion Title: American progress Other Title: Westward the course of destiny Westward ho! Manifest destiny Artist): John Gast Date Created: c1873. John Gast, Brooklyn based, painted this picture in 1872 on commission for George Crofutt, the publisher of a popular series of western travel guides. The painting is so rich in detail that many people encountering it as a slide projected on a screen usually imagine it to be a large canvas. But in fact it is tiny, just 35cm x 41 cm in size.

Industrial Revolution Title: Makers of Steel Artist: Harry Gottlieb b1895 d 1992 No Date As a result of the jobs created by industry there was an increase in immigration to the United States, Harry Gottlieb s family was a part of this wave of immigrants. He was actually born in Romania and his family immigrated to Minnesota in 1907.

Immigration & Urbanization Title: Brooklyn Bridge Artist: Joseph Stella Joseph Stella was inspired to paint the Brooklyn Bridge by an experience he had one night while standing on the bridge. He described, listening to the noises in New York, a very modern city as the underground tumult of the trains in perpetual motion, the shrill sulphurous voice of the trolley wires, the strange moanings of appeal from tug boats.

Progressive Movement Title: Lodgers in Bayard Street Tenement, Five Cents a Spot Date: 1889 Artist: Jacob Ausgust Riis Jacob Riis primarily thought of himself as an author, but through slideshows and his book, How the Other Half Lives, Riis who was born in Ribe, Denmark used photographs to highlight the plight of immigrants. He is often considered the first muckraker.

World War One Title: Army Date: 1917 Artist: James Montgomery Flagg James Flagg was a painter and illustrator for many different American magazines, including Life, Harper s Bazaar and Cosmopolitan. He is best remembered for his WWI recruitment poster. He was the model for the poster too!

Great Migration / Harlem Renaissance Title: THe Migration of the Negro, Panel No Artist: Jacob Lawrence Jacob Lawrence is a painter, storyteller, and documented the African-American experience in the early 20th century. Jacob Lawrence was born in Atlantic City, NJ. His parents had moved North to try and find a better life. Eventually, he came to New York in 1930, at the age of thirteen, and quickly discovered art.

Great Depression Title: Migrant Mother Date: 1936 Artist: Dorthea Lange In 1960, Lange gave this account of the experience: I saw and approached the hungry and desperate mother, as if drawn by a magnet. I do not remember how I explained my presence or my camera to her, but I do remember she asked me no questions. I made five exposures, working closer and closer from the same direction. I did not ask her name or her history. She told me her age, that she was thirty-two. She said that they had been living on frozen vegetables from the surrounding fields, and birds that the children killed. She had just sold the tires from her car to buy food. There she sat in that lean- to tent with her children huddled around her, and seemed to know that my pictures might help her, and so she helped me. There was a sort of equality about it. (From: Popular Photography, Feb. 1960).

WWII Title: Ho hum! When he's finished pecking down that last tree he'll quite likely be tired. Creator: Geisel, Theodor Seuss (Dr. Seuss) Publisher: PM Magazine Date: May 22, 1941 During World War II Theodor Geisel drew editorial cartoons for the left-wing New York newspaper PM. Many of his books also have moral lessons related to the political times. The Sneetches was inspired by Seuss opposition to anti-semitism, thathorton Hears a Who! was a political statement about democracy and isolationism, or that The Lorax and The Butter Battle Book were parables about the environment and the arms race.

Post War Consumerism Title: Corporate Trade Ad Date: 1963 Artist: Andy Warhol Pop art became popular in the late 1950s, reflecting the commercialism of post-wwii American. Pop artists like, Andy Warhol, tried to change the assumption that art was only for the upper class. They took everyday objects that anyone could recognize.

Cold War The idea of a memorial to the Vietnam Veterans was conceived of by Jan Scruggs. Jan served in Vietnam, and wanted a memorial to acknowledge the sacrifices of American servicemen and women during this unpopular war. Permission had to be given by Congress to build the memorial and in 1980, President Carter signed a law giving land for the memorial. An open competition was then held for the design of the memorial. Maya Ying Lin won and the wall was dedicated in Title: Vietnam Veterans Memorial Date: 1982 Artist: Maya Ying Lin

Title: The Problem We All Live With Date: Artist: Norman Rockwell Civil Rights Norman Rockwell had become well known for his portrayel of idyllic small town life through his art on the covers of The Saturday Evening Post. This painting, inspired by the story of a young African-American girl, attending a previously allwhite school. The painting was a shock to Rockwell fans but is now considered a landmark painting. It was displayed in the White House during President Obama s first term.

Cross-Cultural Communication What is it? When are you doing?

Group Juggle In partners: Q1: What things did you have to juggle during this activity? Q2: Can you develop a metaphor that compares this activity to speaking to someone from another country and culture?

Group Juggle part 2 As a whole group: Make a list of all the things you have to juggle when you are communicating with people from other cultures or another language.

The Jungle Group 1: How much meaning do you get by being able to see/watch the speaker. Group 2: When you can t use all of your communication tools, what do you do to get your message across? Group 3: What happens to your message if the words you are using have more than one meaning? Group 4: How was this activity like speaking with cross-cultural awareness?
