COOK USA Materials List for Pastelists Transportation of your pastels: it s best to carry them by hand and place in a sturdy box, such as the plein air box for pastels by Heilmann or a Dakota Deluxe Traveler. Both come with an easel option. Both are lightweight, tough, and hold lots of pastels If you are not in the US, have a look in your local art store or on line. Please sort all your pastels into order like this before you leave. Notice how colors are gathered together and how they range from light to dark within the same color. 2 View Finder and Red Filter/Value Finder it is hard to see value accurately when standing in the sun, this viewfinder will help. Or get one of these: Easels There are a few set ups for using pastels EASyL s Versa box has divisions in the palette so you could carry your pastels in there too, but you must put foam in the bottom and on top of the pastels to stop them moving around while transporting. See above photo. Pastel panels and surfaces There are many choices of surfaces available, bring one of the papers or boards with a tooth. Please DO NOT bring Canson paper or any smooth paper as these papers are harder to work with. Panels Available at: 2

3 Paper Sennelier La Carte Pastel paper Pads My personal favorite, but you can only use it on a sunny day because if it gets wet the surface falls off. It is, however, one of the best surfaces to work on. Art Spectrum offers different surfaces: ART SPECTRUM COLOURFIX PAPER ART SPECTRUM SUPERTOOTH Create your own surface: You will need 300 pound or heaver watercolor paper cold or hot press, or gatorfoam board. Use Golden s Fine Pumice Gel. Pastels Hard Pastels In order to make a make a successful pastel painting you will need both hard and soft pastels. There are many pastels out there to choose from, so bring your favorites as well as a medium to large box of hard pastels such as those made by Richeson or Nu pastel. These need to be sharpened to a point with a knife. Pastel pencils Cretacolor pastel pencils or CarbOthello pastel pencils are a good choice. The latter is a bit softer. Bring a knife or sharpener to sharpen them. Whites You will also need some soft whites and a variety of subtle whites in various hues. At the very minimum, get two soft whites such as a Terry Ludwig, Sennelier or a Diane Townsend in cool white and a warm white. This is good set of soft pastels. Soft Pastels sets Plien aire needs a variety of colors, not just green, so bring your favorites and Pick one or two of the sets listed below if you don t have any of these colors in soft pastels already. 4 Terry Ludwig Soft Pastels The Richard McKinley set The Plien aire set The Maggie price set Great American (medium to soft) Richard McKinley set Miscellaneous Hat (essential), apron, plastic gloves, sunscreen, bug spray, and a top to protect your arms from the sun (white or light color are cooler than dark colors) Headlamp: a light to wear for evening or night painting: Recommended: Petzl Tikka 2 LED Headlamp, this gives a wide area of illumination. It has two settings, put it on low one. Two straight edges (I use two pieces of very thin ply wood 1 inch x 24 inches) for perspective checking 12 inch Metal T-Square, available at utrechtart.com to check buildings are straight Paper towels; bring more than you think you will need. Wet wipes or moist tissues for clean up. Plastic bag for cleanup Umbrella, and fixing device Small mirror, for checking your work Small Stiff bristle brush to remove extra pastel Large 1 flat brush made of bristle to blend pastel with turpentine or alcohol. Pencil or charcoal pencil and sketch pad 10 x 8 or smaller. Eraser Transportation of Pastels Pastels is rather delicate so care must be taken when transporting your finished work. Portfolios with glassine in them ( a wax like paper that does not adhere to the pastel), can also be purchased at DAKOTA'S PASTEL PORTFOLIOS with glassine inserts.
