WEDNESDAY 18 JULY Lecture 2 (M) 9:30-12:00 Dutch Art of the 16 th Century: The change from Catholic to Protestant religion during the Dutch Revolt and its consequences for the arts. Reading: Slive Excursion in Utrecht (M) 13:00-17:00 The Catherijneconvent: A museum of Christian art, housed in a medieval cloister. THURSDAY 19 JULY Lecture 3 (A) 9:30-12:00 Looking Beyond the Realism of the 17 th -Century Dutch Art: What makes Dutch 17 th - century art so special? Why are people so fascinated by Dutch 17 th -century art? Reading: Painting in the Dutch Golden Age, section 1, 2, 3. Excursion to Amsterdam (A) 13:00-17:00 Rijksmuseum Amsterdam: We will visit the Masterpieces in the Gallery of Honor at the Rijksmuseum to take a first look at some of the most renowned works in Dutch Golden Age art. FRIDAY 20 JULY Lecture 4 (A) 9:30-12:00 Turmoil after Tempera: How do war, democracy, iconoclasm and inventions in technology relate to paintings? Reading: Westermann Literature study for Group Presentation and Essay Work on your selected artworks with your peers. You are encouraged to make use of the University Library at this time.

3 WEEK 2 MONDAY 23 JULY Lecture 5 (A) 9:30-12:00 Landscape and Still Life Painting: We discuss the beginnings of this genre, and various different types as well as the possible hidden meanings of these paintings. Reading: Painting in the Dutch Golden Age, section 4, 5, 6. HAND IN ESSAYS Excursion to The Hague (AM) 13:00-17:00 The Mauritshuis: Dubbed little jewelry box of Dutch art, this small yet worldfamous museum houses the Royal Cabinet of Paintings. TUESDAY 24 JULY Excursion to Delft (M) 9:30-17:00 The Prinsenhof and The Vermeer Centre: Delft is a small but incredibly beautiful city, where the famous painter Johannes Vermeer lived and worked as an artist. WEDNESDAY 25 JULY Seminar (A) 9:30-12:00 Academic Controversies in Interpreting Dutch Golden Age Art. Reading: Harbison 1984; De Jong 2000; Fock Excursion to Haarlem (A) 13:00-17:00 Frans Hals Museum: nowadays this former almshouse for elderly men houses many renowned works of art, including the paintings by Frans Hals. THURSDAY 26 JULY Excursion in Utrecht (M) 9:30-13:00 Centraal Museum: Using our specialized knowledge of Dutch Golden Age painting, how can the Utrecht Caravaggisti be distinguished from the Italian masters? Group presentations (AM) 14:00-17:00 RETURN ESSAYS Closing dinner (optional) 18:00 A traditional Dutch pancake dinner at De Oude Muntkelder. Price not included in course fee.
