On-line digital image reserve: Our class has a digital image reserve, which will be helpful as you prepare for the tests. You have two options for accessing the images. Go to the class Canvas site s external links and click on ocache=1. Or from the UT home page, go to Libraries, next Research Tools and click on databases. Go to D and click on DASE (Digital Archive Services). At the left side of the page, click on Public and Shared Sets. Scroll down and click on Smith, Jeffrey The Age of Rembrandt and Rubens. Course description and goals: This class is about the art and culture of northern Europe during the late sixteenth to early eighteenth centuries. It is inherently interdisciplinary since we have to address the reasons art was made, where it was placed, how it was used, and how it relates to broader historical developments, such as the exploration of the non-european world and its impact on the arts. Religion was hotly contested. Different Christian groups disagreed, sometime violently, with the role and use of religious art. This prompted the rise of new artistic specializations, especially in portraiture and secular subjects. - Critical Thinking Skills: We analyze a limited number of artists and monuments very thoroughly. This teaches the students how to look at and assess works in diverse media (painting, manuscript, sculpture, prints, architecture, etc.). How were these works made? Who ordered them and why? Where were they displayed? What were the reactions to them and their subsequent receptions? - Communication Skills: The students address the works in class discussions. The students write a 10 to 12-page paper in which over a two month period they research an approved topic, learn how to develop a thesis and then write a compelling, well-argued

2 paper. These papers are assessed for their research skills, content, and the quality of the writing. - Teamwork: These discussions and debate in class are designed to both reach consensus as a group about issues that have multiple, complex aspects, but to also provide a venue in which students can incorporate feedback from their fellow students that will become essential in the development of their research paper.
