Prized by family members, the quilt was cut in half vertically, through the stamped image of a slave in chains (see circled area), so it could be given to two descendants. Both sections are in the care of the Heritage Center of Lancaster County, through the generosity of Marjorie A. Laidman. Mrs. Coates s abolitionist beliefs took center stage when she stitched this quilt, expressed in the image of a slave and the words Deliver me from the oppression of man, stamped on a center small triangle. The blocks were pieced from fine dress silks, common practice among Quaker women of that era. Instead of using matching sets of light and medium/dark patches, Deborah varied the fabrics in some of her blocks. Do likewise if you wish. To make best use of fabric and limit cutting time, our instructions will lead you to make 86 pairs of matching blocks (1 block left over), and pairs of matching pieced setting triangles.

On 1 of the half-square triangles, trace the slave image (Diagram I) using permanent marker, centering and keeping in mind the G seam allowances. Use as center patch when piecing center block. Hint: You may wish to press the shiny side of a piece of freezer paper to the wrong side of the halfsquare triangle to stabilize it before tracing. Remove after tracing. Deliver me from the oppression of man. 2 Draw diagonal line on wrong side of assorted light 3J square. Referring to Diagram II, place marked square on assorted medium/dark 3J square, right sides together. Sew G seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Open and press to make pieced squares. Make 91 sets of 6 matching. Make 9 sets of 2 matching and set aside to use in Step 5. Make 91 sets of 6 matching. Make 9 sets of 2 matching; set aside. Diagram II 3 Referring to Diagram III, sew 3 rows using 3 matching light 3J half-square triangles and 3 matching pieced squares. Sew rows together to make large pieced triangle. Make 91 sets of 2 matching (182 total). Set aside the 10 large pieced triangles for which there are no matching 7L halfsquare triangles, to use as bottom pieced setting triangles (Step 6). Diagram I 4 Sew matching 7L half-square triangle to large pieced triangle to make Pieced Block (Diagram IV). 5 web bonus at McCallsQuilting.com Page 5 of 5 November/December 2014 Quilt Top Assembly 6 Referring to Assembly Diagram, use side pieced setting triangles, blocks, assorted medium/ dark 7L half-square triangles (you will have 1 left over), and bottom pieced setting triangles to sew 19 diagonal rows, being careful not to stretch bias edges. Sew rows together. Stitch medium/dark 5 11 / 16 half-square triangles to top corners. Quilting and Finishing 7 Layer, baste, and quilt. The small triangles were hand outline quilted. Some of the large triangles are quilted in a clamshell pattern. Parallel lines are quilted on the remaining large triangles. Bind with dark green solid ⅝ Assembly Diagram
