Please note: The large multi-piece applique designs are no longer sold at www. emblibrary.com. These project instructions are for those that have already purchased the designs. If you have questions about the instructions, please send an to Large Multiple-Piece Applique Gather your supplies! Base fabric or blank Applique fabrics Spray adhesive Whether you are working with a large or small version of the large applique design, all individual pieces will print out on a standard 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper. Print the pieces at full size to use as a template for cutting the applique fabric pieces. The following photos feature the applique scarecrow as an example. Specific instructions about other large applique designs follow. Begin by selecting your base fabric. Allow room for the design, and extra for finishing. Find the center to begin sewing. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1213.html (1 of 8) [12/2/2011 4:01:52 PM]
Hoop the base fabric with a sheet of cutaway stabilizer. Make a composite of applique fabric and stabilizer. Adhere together with a quick shot of spray stabilizer. Cut the shape from the paper templates, and then use that template to cut the shape from the applique fabric and stabilizer composite. Begin sewing the design. The dieline will sew first - that will show you where to place the cut applique fabric. Spray the back of the fabric and stabilizer composite with a quick shot of spray adhesive. Place the fabric in the dieline. Then sew the zig zag, or tack down stitch. Next, the satin stitch border. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1213.html (2 of 8) [12/2/2011 4:01:52 PM]
After sewing the torso, you can sew either the arms, head, or legs - the order does not matter. Remove the top/ inner hoop, and slide the up, down, left or right, depending on the next piece that you will sew, being careful not to rotate the fabric. Rehoop the fabric. You may wish to use the paper templates as a guide when rehooping the fabric. Raffia can be inserted into the scarecrow wherever you choose. Raffia, also known as "Hollywood Ribbon" is available at most craft and paper stores. Cut Raffia into desired lengths. After the dieline has sewn, place a few pieces onto the back of the fabric and stabilizer composite. The spray stabilizer that you used should be enough to hold the Raffia in place. Place in the dieline, and sew the tack down and satin stitches. Using the paper templates, cut the fabric for the next portion of the scarecrow from a fabric and stabilizer composite. Sew the dieline, place the fabric in the dieline, sew the tack down and satin stitch. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1213.html (3 of 8) [12/2/2011 4:01:52 PM]
Repeat the above steps, sewing each portion of the design. Applique Scarecrow The applique scarecrow is in five pieces: head, two arms, torso, and pants. To help you line up and connect the pieces, the design file includes common start points that line up with the torso. These common start points are marked on this image with green circles. The pants' center point is in the top center; that is where the needle will begin. The arms' center points are on the top of the shoulder, and the head center point is bottom center. The torso sews first, and all other pieces are oriented to the torso. After you sew the torso, you can sew the other pieces in any order. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1213.html (4 of 8) [12/2/2011 4:01:52 PM]
Applique Santa Claus Santa is in six pieces. Begin by sewing Santa's torso. Then, slide the fabric up and get ready for section 2. Section 2 sews Santa's right mitten, sleeve cuff, and coat trim. The section will start on near Santa's waist, above the trim. Then, slide the fabric up and get ready for section 3. Section 3 sews Santa's pants. This section will start near Santa's waist, below the coat trim. Slide the fabric up again, and sew section 4, the pants trim and boots. That section will begin sewing above Santa's left cuff. Next, slide the fabric down to sew section 5, Santa's head. This section will begin near Santa's left hand, where the mitten meets the sleeve. After sewing, rotate the fabric by 90 degrees and slide over to sew section 6, the sack. Applique Mrs. Claus Mrs. Claus is in five pieces. Begin by sewing Mrs. Claus' head. That piece will end in the center. The next piece, the top part of her cloak, will begin sewing at the juncture between her collar and shoulder. The third piece, the mittens and middle portion of her cloak, will begin sewing at the point where her forearm meets her waist. The fourth piece, the bottom of her skirt, will begin sewing mid-way down the right side of her cloak, around her knee level. The fifth piece, her boots, will begin sewing where the right heel of her boot meets the bottom of her cloak. Once you finish sewing each piece, slide the fabric straight across the hoop, and hoop again. Then, line the needle up with the common point and begin sewing. If you wish, you file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1213.html (5 of 8) [12/2/2011 4:01:52 PM]
can use the paper templates as a guide for placement. Applique Elf The Elf is in four pieces. Begin by sewing the elf's hat and head. The design will stop in the center of the design. Remove the fabric from the hoop and slide it straight up. The second piece, the elf's vest, torso, and right arm, will sew second. The design will begin to sew at the top right corner of the elf's vest. The third piece of the design, the elf's left arm and hat pom pom, will begin sewing at the bottom corner of the left sleeve. The fourth piece, the pants and shoes, will begin sewing at the right juncture where the vest meets the pants. If you wish, you can use the paper templates as a guide for placement. Applique Christmas Tree The tree is in four pieces. Begin by sewing the tree trunk and skirt. Then, slide the fabric down, straight across the hoop, and get ready for section two. Section two is the bottom part of the tree, and the common start point is the juncture where the trunk meets the boughs on the right side. After section two, get ready for section three. Slide the fabric straight across the hoop. The common start point is where the middle section meets the bottom section, on the right side. Then, finally, sew the tree top. The common start point is where the middle section meets the top section, on the right side. Add snowflakes, wrapped gifts, and other decorations to this holiday design! file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1213.html (6 of 8) [12/2/2011 4:01:52 PM]
Applique Snowman The snowman is in four pieces. Begin by sewing the snowman's head and hat. The design will end in the center. Remove the fabric from the hoop and slide it straight up. The second piece, the snowman's scarf, right arm, and right torso, will sew second. It will start at the juncture at the right side of the scarf, near the buttons. Then, slide the fabric straight up and get ready for the third section. The third section is the left part of the snowman's midsection, left arm, and buttons. It will begin sewing at the point where the scarf meets the midsection. Then, the fourth section: the snowman's lowest section. That will begin to sew where the snowman's middle and lower sections meet, in the right corner. Add snowflakes and text to personalize this design! Applique Turkey The turkey is in six pieces. Begin by sewing section 1, the turkey's back. Then, remove the fabric from the hoop and rotate it by 90 degrees for the tailfeathers. You may wish to use the paper templates as a guide to help align the sections. Section 2, the tailfeathers, will begin sewing near the large satin stitch that divides the turkey's back. Then, rotate the fabric back 90 degrees, and slide over to sew the turkey's head and chest. Section 3 will begin sewing near the back of the turkey's neck. Section 4, the flank, will begin sewing on the top right of the section, and section 5, the second flank, will begin sewing at the top middle. Section 6, the feet and bottom feathers, will begin sewing in the top middle. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1213.html (7 of 8) [12/2/2011 4:01:52 PM]
